Arthur J. Lavender

Gordon, Ga. – Arthur Jones Lavender died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2002 in a Macon hospital. He just celebrated his 90th birthday in July.

Mr. Lavender was the son of the late Arthur Erasmus Lavender and the late Ethel Irene Jones Lavender Gladin.

He graduated Gordon High School and joined the Conservation Corp. Camp in Alabama. He worked for Southern Bell before joining P.W. Martin-Gordon Clays, Inc. Mr. Lavender joined the Navy and was a Radiornan 1st class aboard the USS LST 157 in WWII.

When his shipped docked in New York, he met Vivian Morris, formerly of New Zion, and in 1944, he and Miss Morris became engaged. They married on Nov. 10, 1945, and returned to Gordon, Georgia. Mr. Lavender worked for the Freeport Kaolin Co. as supervisor of Production and Shipping and retired after 32 years. Mr. Lavender was a member of the Gordon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Vivian Morris Lavender of Gordon; a son, Jimmy (Linda) Lavender of Sumter; daughters. Diane (Dan) Hurst of Gordon and Kathy (Butch) Pope of Macon, Ga.; a sister, Besse Rae Youmans of Savannah; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at Gordon First Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Carnley and Rev. Chip Grantham officiating.

Burial was at the Ramah Cemetery in Gordon.

Williams-White Columns Funeral Home of Gordon was in charge of the arrangements.

Lonnie James Lowrimore Jr.

SUMTER – Lonnie James “Jim” Lowrimore, Jr., 45, husband of Karyl Keck Lowrimore, died Saturday, August 26, 2006 after a lengthy illness at his home in Sumter.

Born September 16, 1960 in Manning, he was a son of the late L.J. Lowrimore, Sr. and Bertha Thames Lowrimore. He was the owner and operator of Lowrimore Exterminating Company.

Surviving besides his wife and mother of Sumter are one brother, Tony Lowrimore of Greenville; two sisters, Patricia Bartlette of Sumter, and Sheryl Lowrimore of Tallahassee, Fla.; three nephews, Clark Britt of Louisville, Ky., Ricky White of Loris, and Levi Lowrimore of Greenville; five nieces, Tammy Teddar, Rebecca Nesbitt, and Susan Pack all of Sumter, Nancy White of Columbia, and Chloe Lowrimore of Greenville; sixteen great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeremy Houghton and Bob Partin officiating.

Burial followed in the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery at Wilson.

Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette McFadden

Jeanette Loraine Neal McFadden, 53, wife of Daniel McFadden Jr., died Aug. 18, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born Jan. 3, 1953, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Viola Glencamp Neal and the late Douglas Neal. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1970 graduate of Manchester High School. She attended Allen University, Columbia, and earned a degree in computer science. She continued her education at Morris College and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught in the Sumter County public school system for many years and also worked as an insurance agent for Primerica and as an Avon representative. Mrs. McFadden attended New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she accepted Jesus Christ and served on the usher board, adult choir and as leader of the Girl Scouts.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel McFaden Jr. of the home; two daughters, Amanda Billups of Sumter and Eartha (Clayton) McFadden Ballard of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren, Akesha and Alichia Workman and Morgan Ballard; mother, Viola Glencamp Neal of Sumter; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; father-in-law, Daniel McFadden Sr. of Summerton; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a special cousin, the Rev. Dinah Washington of Sumter.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Dorothy Smith McFadden; and a brother-in-law, Jessie John McFadden.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Neal Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Lottie A. Parker

Lottie Adell Parker, age 68, beloved wife of 50 years to Wardell Parker, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Manning, a daughter of the late Thomas “Dickie” Rhodus and Emily DuBose Rhodus. She retired from Madison Industries after 37 years of service. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Sharon Ard, Cynthia Gayle Stevens and her husband, Lewis Yarborough, and Donna P. Morris, all of Sumter; a sister, Betty Ann (Ralph) Shuler of Summerton; six grandchildren, Allen Stevens and his wife, Lindsey, Michael Stevens and his wife, Jenilyn, McKenzie Morris, Cory Morris, Zachery Morris and Emily Truesdale, all of Sumter; and one great-grandchild, Landyn Stevens of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Rhodus of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Shuler officiating.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Allen Stevens, Michael Stevens, Bill Watson, Lewis Yarborough, Steve Buckner and Ben “Dude” Russell.

Honorary pallbearers were Devon Jones, Richie Morris, Toby Parker and Edgar Hodge.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Wigfall J. Rose

Wigfall Junior Rose, 66, husband of Nancy Delores Rose, departed this life Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was the fifth of seven children born to the late Wigfall New Rose Sr. and Wilhelmenia Washington Rose. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He was employed by Black River Electric Cooperative, where he retired after 42 years of dedicated service. He was married to Nancy Delores Sweat-Rose in 1964, and to this union four children were added.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Delores Sweat-Rose of the home; his children, Gloria Rose-Lee and Barbara Ann Harvin, both of Sumter, Vickie Rose of Columbia and Joshua R. Rose, who was reared in the home; grandchildren, LaQuanna, Quentin and Danta; two sisters, Susie L. Rose-Bracey and Alice (Herbert) Bracey, both of Sumter; two brothers, John (Wilhelmenia) Rose and Herbert Rose, both of Sumter; six brothers-in-law, Cleveland (Roberta) Sweat, Johnnie (Eartha) Johnson and Ronnie E. Johnson, all of Manning, Calvin (Thelma) Johnson of Pinewood, Charles Sweat of Columbia and Isaac Farmer of Sumter; five sisters-in-law, Rutha Mae Rose, Edith Sweat and Elease Leneau, all of Sumter, Rebecca (Roosevelt) Sinkler of Pinewood and Victoria Gibson of Paxville; three aunts, Charlotte Bennett, Phoebe Lou Sweatte and Sarah Sweat, all of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Rose; a sister, Coral Farmer; and two brothers, Abraham Rose and Blease Rose.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. M.G. Walters, Evangelist Miller and Minister Ethel Richburg.

Burial followed in the Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Black River Electric Cooperative employees and nephews.

Flower bearers were nieces, family and friends.

Sumter Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Robinson Briggs Jr.

Fred Robinson Briggs, Jr., 69, husband of Sallie Staggers Briggs, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at his home in Manning.

Born November 17, 1936, in Silver, he was a son of the late Fred Robinson Briggs, Sr. and the late Lillian Newman Briggs. He was a graduate of Carlisle Military Academy in Bamberg, a supervisor for Santee Cooper Cross Generating Station, and a S.C. National Guardsman.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, Fred Robinson “Robby” Briggs, III of Pinewood; a daughter, Wende Briggs (D. P.) Elliott of Pinewood; two stepdaughters, Karen Jackson of Goose Creek and Rachel Jackson Shuler of Manning; a sister, Sara Ann Briggs (Jim) Aycock of Manning; a brother, Hartwell Spain (Virginia) Briggs of Manning; and five grandchildren, Brian Dargan Elliott, Mason Briggs Elliott, Megan Irene Briggs, Kyle Michael Sargent, and Sallie Pauline Sargent.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Williams, Carson Turner, Jimmy Rhodes, Billy Dixon, Stewart Pierce and Isiah Small.

Honorary pallbearers were the Santee Cooper Cross Generating Station Coal Yard supervisors and crews, and Dr. C. E. Coker, Jr.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Jeanne C. Watson Oncology Unit, c/o Tuomey Endowment, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Leon M. Brown

Leon Marion Brown, 85, husband of Ruby Kyzer Brown, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at a local nursing center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Lee Brown and the late Juanita Dunlap Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and retired from McLaughlin Ford. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

He was twice married, first to the late Susie Annie Partin Brown and later to Ruby Kyzer Brown.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; nieces, Clemmie Ann “Bobo” Epperly, Diane Spivey, Cindy Gainey and Lisa Bush, all of Sumter; nephews, Thomas LeRoy Partin of Fayetteville, N.C., and Earl “Butch” Shuler of Hesperia, Calif.; great-nephews, Marion Lee Brown of Fort Worth, Texas, and Matthew Perry of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Betsy Hornsby of Manning, Rhonda Molina of Sumter and Boykin Lewis Hornsby III of Flower Mound, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Gayle Molina, Cameron Molina, Alexis Sonny Hornsby, Blake Lewis Hornsby and Landen Michael Brown; and a special pet, Angel.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Roye Lynn Kulik officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Myrtis Ashe Hickman

Myrtis Ashe Hickman, 93, widow of Charles Vernon Hickman, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at the home of her daughter in Atlanta, Georgia.

Born December 10, 1912, in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Selby Bluford and Lula Hair Ashe. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, and a retired LPN, having worked at Clarendon Memorial Hospital and in private duty nursing.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Butler of Atlanta; a son, Chris Hickman of Hampton, Va; daughters-in-law, Gloria Hickman of Manning and Joyce (Jim) Marshall of Manning; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby V. and Alvin R. Hickman.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Ruth B. Jones

Ruth Boger Jones, 98, of Brunswick, Ga., and formerly of Sumter, died at Hospice on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

Mrs. Jones was born in Manning, where she attended the public schools there and G.W.C. (Furman University) in Greenville. She lived in Sumter for 60 years before moving to Brunswick, Ga., in 1993. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Bay View in Nahanta. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter and attended First United Methodist Church in Brunswick, where she was a member of Fellowship No. 6.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin L. Jones, and is survived locally by a daughter, Madge Carol Jones Comer; two grandchildren, Dr. Emri (Jana) Comer and Cathy Dowdy (Mike) Comer; and four great-grandchildren, Haley and Ryan Comer and Christina and Nicole Dowdy.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who possessed a kind and gentle spirit and will be greatly missed.

A graveside services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 in Sumter.
