Alphonza June

Alphonza “Al” June, 55, husband of Geanice Green June, died Aug. 16, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born March 15, 1951, in Manning, he was a son of the late Lawson June Sr. and Harriett Smith June. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. He also attended Vorhees College and Central Carolina Technical College (formerly Sumter Area Technical College). He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Elizabeth Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.

Survivors include one son, Derrick (Loretta) Lesesne of Columbia; two brothers, Lawson (Ann) June of Asbury Park, N.J., and Lee N. (Shirley) June of East Lansing, Mich.; five sisters, Louise Servance, Mary (Noah David) Wells of Baltimore, Md., Catherine (Charles) Wilson of Bromall, Pa., Roberta (Robert) Cain of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ruby Lee (Joe) Gaters of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley Vaughn, pastor, presiding, assisted by Ministers Sarah Miller, Howard Wallace, Ranzy McFadden and the Rev. Dr. Christopher Mathis. Dr. Lee N. June, brother of the deceased, delivered the eulogy.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers were the U.S. Army Honors Military Team.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Sue Sabb

Sue Ester Pearson Sabb, 76, died Aug. 14, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Dec. 8, 1929, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie Thames and the late Janie Levy Thames. Mrs. Sabb was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was joined in holy matrimony to Joe Pearson until his death and later met and married the late James Edward “Bo” Sabb. Mrs. Sabb was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton. She was also a member of the YMCA Lodge No. 24 and Seniors on the Move Travel Club. She was employed by Summerton Motel for many years; Summerton Apparel and later R&J Industries also employed her until her retirement.

Six brothers preceded her in death.

Loving and fond memories will be cherished by her three daughters, Josephine (James) Simpson of Tuskegee, Ala., Janie (Eldora) Robinson of Pinewood, and Sarah Pearson of Summerton; a grandson reared in the home, Darrell Stukes; two sisters, Robertha Lawson and Willene Wright, both of Summerton; three brothers, George (Mivens) Thames of Summerton, Leon (Argenel) Thames of Manning, and Roosevelt Thames of Lake City; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sabb were held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Lawson officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mervin William Thigpen

CADES – Mr. Mervin William Thigpen, 77, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 21, 2006, after a long illness.

Mr. Thigpen was born in Clarendon County, the son of the late Jim and Lillie Thigpen. He graduated from Hebron High School and was in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post. He was a retired farmer, carpenter and security guard; an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Carrie Thigpen; three daughters, Mary Lynn (Johnny) Buddin of Cades, Rose (Stanley) Allsbrook of Sumter and Cindy Thigpen of Charlotte, NC.; three grandchildren, Capt. Stephanie Feagin, Corey Allsbrook and John Buddin.

Memorial services were held at Brockington Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006.

Memorials can be made to the Carolina Hospice, 121 E. Cedar Street, Florence, S.C. 29501.

A special thanks to the Veterans Hospital in Columbia and Charleston.

Jacqueline M. Walker

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Jacqueline Mack Walker, 47, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at Wyckoff Hospital, Brooklyn.

Born June 25, 1959, in Brooklyn, she was a daughter of the Rev. Leroy Evans and Isadora Mack. She received her formal education in the public schools of Brooklyn. In her youth, she joined the Crossroad Baptist Church in Brooklyn. She was an active member of the J. Arnold Choir. She was a 1977 graduate of Boys and Girls High School.

Survivors include a sister, Brenda Mack Alexander of Brooklyn; a nephew, Jemell Alexander of Virginia; a caring aunt of the home, Mildred Mack; five aunts, Viola Lemon (Robert) Cain, who she lived with as a child, and Odessa L. Mack of Manning, Margaret M. Brown, Edna Mack and Estelle Mack of Brooklyn; cousins she claimed as her siblings, Gloria Pugh, Willie Lemon, Linda S.C.ott, Janice Brown, Eddie Lemon and Darrell Lemon.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Eddie Lesaine presiding and the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon as eulogist.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Cecil Atkinson

Mr. Cecil Atkinson, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Atkinson was born in the Shiloh Community of Sumter County, a son of the late William Thomas Atkinson and Ethel Corrine Morris Atkinson. He was a retired farmer, an avid hunter and fisherman, and a member of the Manning First Baptist Church where he was a member of the P.T. Bradham Sunday school class.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Becky Atkinson; an infant son, Rusty Atkinson; a sister, Etheleen A. Thomas; and two brothers, Donnie H. Atkinson and Charles E. Atkinson.

He is survived by his wife, Sherrille M. Atkinson of Manning; a daughter, Sue (Scott) A. McFaddin of Gable; two sons, Barry (Gwen) Atkinson and Danny Atkinson of New Zion; two stepsons, Jamie (Kim) Atkinson of Lexington and Michael (Cyndi) Atkinson of Charleston; three sisters, Rhoetta Oliva of Columbia, Sylvia Jean (Paul) Thomas and Lois (Ralph) Coker all of Turbeville; four brothers, Glellan Atkinson of Turbeville, Billy Atkinson of Scranton, Bobby Joe (Katherine) Atkinson of Andrews, and J.T. (Loretta) Atkinson of Barnwell; six grandchildren, three step-grandsons.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at the Manning First Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the Olive Grove Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Memorials may be made to Olive Grove Church , P. O. Box 183, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

W. Heyward Brown

William Heyward Brown, 81, husband of Ruth Ann Ferguson Brown, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at a local nursing home.

Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late George Ardee Brown and the late Sudie Hancock Brown.

Mr. Brown was a charter member of Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served in numerous capacities, including church treasurer for a number of years and was active in the Men of the Church. He served as a moderator of the former Harmony Presbytery and as the last president of the Synod of the Southeast. He was an Elder Commissioner to the 1970 General Assembly of the PCUS and was also active in New Harmony Presbytery PCUSA. He was a founding member of the musical group Mission of Men; a member of Gideons International and the American Legion Post No. 15. He was retired from the lumber business with 50 years of service and was later self-employed. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years of Sumter; two sons, H. Glenn Brown and W. Stan Brown, both of Manning; two daughters, Judith McLeod and Donna (Kelly) Knopf of Sumter; a brother, Herbert (Jewel) Brown of Alcolu; a brother-in-law, Orby (Gail) Ferguson of Myrtle Beach; a sister-in-law, Hala Ferguson of Bishopville; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Brown and George Brown; three sisters, Eloise Overstreet, Clyde Taylor and Willie Mae Boyle.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jaylin Dow

Baby Jaylin Dow died Aug. 14, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

He was a son of Keisha Brunson and Jimmy Lee Dow.

Survivors include his maternal grandparents, Rosa White and Stanley Brunson; paternal grandfather, Jimmy Dow; maternal great-grandmother, Mary White; two brothers, Jayvon Dow and Shamar Dow.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at New Bethel Holiness Church, Davis Crossroad section of Summerton, with Pastor Reather Bennett officiating.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Felix Wright Jr.

Early Thursday morning, Aug. 4, 2005, God sent his angel to Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton and took away from the family Felix Wright Jr.

Felix was born Sept. 18, 1922, to the late Felix Wright Sr. and the late Mamie Lawson Wright. He was the widower of Odell Ragin Wright. He was reared in a Christian home. He attended Scott’s Branch High School. He was also a member of St. Mark AME Church. He was a World War II veteran. He served in Paris, France. He came home with an honorable discharge. After being back home from the Army, he met and married Odell Ragin. He later changed his membership to Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, Pinewood. Felix and Odell were blessed with three daughters, Betty, Regenia and Sherry. He loved them very much. He helped them on the way to success. He worked hard to help them. His first main job was helping build Santee Cooper Bridge across Santee River. He was also custodian at Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton.

Felix leaves to cherish his memories three loving daughters, Betty (Joe) Oliver and Regenia Felder, both of New York City, N.Y., and Sherry (Donald) Oliver of Englewood, N.J.; a loving sister, Ethenia Wright King of Summerton; a niece, Gloria Holliday of Summerton; six grandchildren, Joe (Darlene) Oliver, Ronnie, Donja, Tory and April of New York City, Corry of South Carolina; two great-grandchildren, Ieshia and Tray Manie Oliver of New York; one aunt, Leola Lawson of Manning; one brother, Waiters (Bessie) Wright of Dallas, Texas; four sisters-in-law, Ruby Mae Martin, Willie B. Frierson, Jean Ragin and Mae Ragin, all of New York City; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, River Road, Pinewood, with Elder Roosevelt Boyd presiding and the Rev. Jacob Clark officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Janet W. Ackerman

Janet Wanda Ackerman, 63, wife of Lauris Laurie Ackerman, died Thursday at her home in Manning.

Born June 12, 1943, in Bluefield, W.Va., she was employed in the restaurant business and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a daughter, Carolyn Walden of Summerville; a son, Michael Billips of Spring Hill, Fla.; three brothers, Gene Boris, Louie Boris and Benny Presley; three sisters, Hazel Keels, Connie Breeden and Susie Rowe; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Larry Miller officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Lucian D. Boyce

Lucian D. “L.D.” Boyce, 76, husband of Mattie White Boyce, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born April 11, 1929, in Shiloh, he was a son of the late Lucian M. and Lois Pritchard Boyce. He was first married to the late Ann McDonald Boyce. He was a retired chief warrant officer and U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of numerous medals and awards to include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, World War II Victory Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star. Retired CW-4 Boyce was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and director.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; a son, Bruce Boyce and wife, Cindy, of Leesburg, Va.; two daughters, Elaine Stevens of Manning and Linda Wadford of Camden; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, in Good Shepherd Baptist Church with the Rev. Esta Gilley and the Rev. Carroll Waddell officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1891 Oak Grove Church Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.
