Molly D. Bryant

Molly Loraine Dennis Bryant, 91, widow of Woodrow Bryant, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at home in Manning.

Born May 14, 1914, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Curtis and Lizzie Anderson Dennis. She was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Loraine Lovelady and Elsie (Clyde) White of Manning; three sons, Douglas Woodrow (Becky) Bryant, Donald T. (Sheria) Bryant and Dennis S. (Vicki) Bryant of Manning; sister-in-law, Nellie Holladay of Manning; half-brother, J.C. Dennis of Irmo; two half-sisters, Kathleen Bailey and Doris Miles of Manning; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Brown; granddaughter, Laura White; and sisters, Gladys Ridgeway, Vermelle Richburg and Ethlene Ridgeway.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Larry Hughes officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, 2761 Liberty Church Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Willie Mae Hilton

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Willie Mae Hilton, 57, died Aug. 9, 2005, in New Orleans.

Born Oct. 17, 1947, in the Wilson community of Manning, she was a daughter of the late Louis J. Hilton and the late Bessie Tucker Hilton. She was a graduate of Manning Training School Class of 1965. Afterwards, she furthered her education in the area of nursing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Fla., and received a diploma in nursing. Later, she attended the Edna McConnell Clark School of Nursing, Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y., and became a registered nurse. Over the years, she was employed with several hospitals, and was a lifelong member of Shiloh AME Church. Prior to her illness, she was employed at the Medical Unit, 30th Street Post Office, Philadelphia, Pa.

Survivors include three brothers, Louis (Betty) Hilton and Carrell (Jacqueline) Hilton, both of Foreston, and Ernest Hilton of Manning; four sisters, Ethel Johnson of Charleston, Lottie (Lionel) Marco of New Orleans, La., Lauretta Hilton and Carolyn Hilton, both of Manning; one uncle, Leroy (Evelyn) Montgomery of Foreston; and two aunts, Hattie King of Baltimore, Md., and Myrtis Tucker of Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Susie Mae Hilton; and three brothers, Dorrell, Charles and Timothy Hilton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005 at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Deloris Gerow, Gerri Houston and Marion H. Newton officiating.

Burial followed in the Junky Yard Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Thelma Wells Jones

Thelma Wells Jones, 62, widow of Donald Jones, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 5, 1943, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Dan Wells and Minnie Wells Washington. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

She is survived by seven children, Minnie (Stanley) Kinder, Ruth Jones (Leander), Mickey Jones (James), William (Catherine) Jones, Ronnie Jones, Charles Jones and Steve (Jennifer) Jones, all of Sumter; one brother, Dan Wells Jr. of Alcolu; one sister, Bessie (Albert) McKnight of Thomasville, N.C.; two additional children she reared as her own, Roy Wells and Rosa Wells; 30 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Jones of Sumter and Rosa Lee Wells of Richmond, Va.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Leo and James Wells.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at Westminister United Presbyterian Church in Alcolu with the Rev. Dr. Ella Busby officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

John D. Mims

John DuRant Mims, 81, widower of Edna Scott Mims, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, in Lake City Scranton Healthcare in Scranton.

Born Feb. 18, 1924, in Salters, he was a son of the late A.D. and Annie Covington Mims. He was a retired law enforcement officer in Greeleyville, a Mason and member and former deacon of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Lorraine (Dennis) Kropf of Manning, Roberta (Mike) Burrows of Sumter, and Lois Ann (Johnny) Shaff of Gleenville, Ga.; a son, Dr. Albert DuRant (Julia) Mims of Lake City; five sisters, Annie C. Moses and Mary Ellen Mims of Lexington, Dorothy Louise Poston of Kingstree, Florence C. Metts of Moncks Corner and Grace Wilson of West Columbia; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, in Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Burgess officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Simon Roberts

Simon Roberts, 77, widower of Elizabeth Jean Jones Roberts, died Aug. 8, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 13, 1928, in Manning, he was a son of Zareaus and Mary Briggs Roberts. Mr. Roberts moved to New York City in 1943 and was employed at Namco Machinery in Maspeth, N.Y., for 43 years. After his retirement, he relocated to Sumter in 1995. He enjoyed living in Sumter and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include two children, Melvin Roberts and Michele Roberts, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Gertrude Matthews of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Bill Roberts of Brooklyn; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one adopted grandson; one nephew; four nieces; three daughters-in-law; six sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Simon Roberts Jr.; and four sisters, Thomaina, Agnes, Pauline and Lily.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005 in the parlor of Job’s Mortuary in Sumter, with the Rev. Joseph Ricks officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Adline T. Stone

Mrs. Adline Tindal Stone, 97, of Sumter, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Adline was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Sumter, a daughter of the late James Tindal and Rose “Mary” Johnson Tindal.

She relocated to Louisville, Ky., and became a member of Little Flock Missionary Baptist Church where she participated in Women’s Day events. In 1938, she married the late Barney Stone, to this union two sons were born.

Survivors include two sons, Oliver Stone and Milton Stone, both of Louisville; a brother, Clarence (Ruth) Tindal of New Zion; and a sister, Beluah T. Hollis of the home in Sumter.

Adline was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Levi Tindal, Lee Tindal and Needum Tindal; and three sisters, Pearl T. Thomas, Ella T. Blanding and Maggie Tindal.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, in the Chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Bishop Jeffrey Johnson officiating.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wade H. Smith Jr.

Wade Harold “Sonny” Smith, 67, entered into eternal rest Monday, July 31, 2006, at his home in New Zion.

He was born in Clarendon County on Dec. 5, 1938, a son of the late Wade Hampton Smith and the late Isielene Eugenia McClary Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church USA and was a member of the Presbyterian Men, a church deacon, trustee and elder. He was also an usher of the church. Mr. Smith was a member of Pride of Rose Hill Masonic Lodge No. 405, South Carolina Young Farmer’s Association and Friendship Hunting Club. He was formerly employed by Williamsburg County Transit System, Air Cap (Sunbeam) Inc., Baxter Laboratory, Colonial Rubber Inc., and self-employed as a farmer.

He leaves to cherish his memories forever, his wife, Ada Davis Smith of New Zion; godson, the elder Marshall P. Ivey Jr. of Florence; four sisters, Miriam Smith and Sylvia Ivey, both of New Zion, Gloria Frieson and Charlena Timmons, both of Florence; four sisters-in-law, Carol Nicholson (Carnell) of Jamaica, N.Y., Mattien (Leroy) Newman of Long Island, N.Y., Linda (Thomas) Henry of Manning and Patricia Smith of New Zion; three uncles, Eugene Cuthbert of Darien, Ga., Edward Tomlin of Charleston and Matthew Epps of Alcolu; special cousins, Blondell McCottry Matthews of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lorraine Dimery (Verdell) Barr of Kingstree; special friends, Willard McCray, William, Cooper, Pearlean Lowery, Willie Albert Cooper and John McCray; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, in Friendship Presbyterian Church USA in New Zion, with the Rev. Stanley W. Jones, pastor, officiating.

Interment followed in Friendship Presbyterian USA Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Presbyterian Church USA Building Fund, 10979 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Carl T. Wise Sr.

Carl Thomas Wise Sr., 47, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Warren Edward Wise and the late Vonice “Speedy” Baker Reinbold.

He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Top Lawn and All About Pools & Spas.

Survivors include five sons, Carl T. Wise Jr. of Florence, Christopher Leroy Wise, Colby Ray (Kristen) Wise, Courtland Edward Wise and Cyle Joseph Wise, all of Kansas; a daughter, Millena Leighann Wise of Manning; two granddaughters, Nevaeh Faye Wise and Kristen Larae Wise; his stepfather, Adam Leroy Reinbold of Sumter; two brothers, Joey Edward (Ruth) Wise of Sumter and Tony (Linda) Wise of Kansas; a sister, Issel (Doc) Saukko of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Pressley Morris officiating.

Thelma P. Bradshaw

Thelma Mae Pompey Bradshaw, 66, wife of Ray Brown Bradshaw, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 29, 1939, in the Pompeytown section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Adell Witherspoon Rogers Pompey and the late Freddie Pompey.

Mrs. Bradshaw received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, attending Rosenwall. In her youth she joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. She later moved to Lancaster, Pa., where she resided for 32 years and was employed by Servomation Corp. for 23 years. She returned home in 1996, attending St. Luke.

Survivors besides her husband and parents include a son, Ray C. (Sandra) Bradshaw of Lancaster; three daughters, Cheri (Nathaniel) Gantz of Lancaster, Barbara (Alex) Simon and Brenda (Johnny) Fergerson, both of Greeleyville; seven brothers, Lewis (Vernell) Pompey and Willie (Catherine) Pompey, both of Greeleyville, Lee (Lois) Pompey of Monks Corner, Freddie (Estelle) Pompey, Henry (Ida) Pompey, General (Renae) Pompey and James (Lucretia) Rogers, all of Lancaster; four sisters, Julia (Simon) Wallace, Sarah (Matthew) Robinson, Lillian (Ivory) Brown and Sylinda (Paul) Murray, all of Lancaster; an aunt, Daisy Witherspoon of Manning; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at the Pinegrove AME Church in Greeleyville with the Revs. Moses Wilson, pastor, and Annette Ragin, officiating.

Burial was in the Pinegrove AME Church Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Timothy C. Brand

HARTSVILLE — Baby Timothy Christopher Brand, son of Timothy J. Brand and Gloria McCrae Brand, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.

Survivors besides his parents of the home in Hartsville include his paternal grandparents, Woodrow Moore Jr. of Gastonia, N.C. and Everlina Brand Capers of Jacksonville, N.C.; his paternal great-grandmother, Martha Jackson Moore of Manning; his maternal grandmother, Olivia McArthur McCrae of Marion; a brother, Timothy Whitten Brand of the home; a sister, Olivia M. McCrae of the home; seven uncles; and 17 aunts.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Manning Deliverance Temple, Manning with Pastor Jacqueline Fulmore officiating.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
