John A. Corbett Sr.

Note to readers: An unedited version of Mr. John Corbett’s obituary was inadvertently published last week. Out of respect for Mr. Corbett and the entire Corbett family, as well as to preserve the historical record, we are reprinting this story this week in its edited form. We deeply regret the error.

Clarendon County said goodbye to one of its fixtures with the passing of John Ashley Corbett Sr., owner of Manning’s long time printing business, Quality Printers.

“ Mr. John,” as he was affectionately known by all who knew him, was a dedicated family man, a shrewd businessperson and a community partner.

He was also a former employee of The Manning Times where he served as a press operator from 1958 to 1971. All who knew him thought highly of him.

“ I have known John Corbett all his life. I know him to be a good businessman and a kind and giving man when there was a need to be met,” said former Manning mayor Pansy Ridgeway. “He always responded to any request, smiling with an outstretched hand. He was a great citizen and made a tremendous contribution to our community.”

Clarendon County farmer, Scott Jackson Sr. also knew Corbett from his childhood.

“ I came to know John Corbett because he grew up on a farm my family worked. He had a big family and I knew his daddy,” Jackson said. “John and I became even closer because we both farmed on adjacent land. John loved to raise all kinds of animals, especially exotic birds, including ostriches. John was a smart businessman and enjoyed doing the different or unusual thing. He was a good solid person and I will miss his company.”

Corbett began his business, Quality Printers, 35 years ago. Not only was he skilled in his business endeavors, he was generous with the community.

“ When I was the editor of the Manning High School Monarch, 25 years ago, Quality Printers printed the paper,” said Jeffrey Black, owner of Black Sheep Promotions and Studio 1916. “Mr. John, understanding that we were students first and would-be-journalists second, gave me a key to the building (The old Music Corner building) so we could work after hours to put the paper together. That’s just the kind of man he was … always thinking of others and what he could do to help them. How fortunate we are that he touched so many lives.”

John, along with his wife of 49 years, JoAnn, were named as Businesspersons of the Year in 1997. There are few individuals in the community who lives they did not touch.

“ I have known Mr. John all my life,” said S.C. State Senator John Land. “He built a small business by his talents and he was well known across the state for Quality Printers’ reliability and promptness. He was so dependable that I recommended him to many of my Legislature colleagues.”

Land’s wife is no less a fan of Mr. John’s.

“ I always felt he took such pride in what he did and always wanted it to be right,” said Marie Land. “He moved his business with the times and how fortunate we all are that he trained his son to continue the business.”

Corbett was born on April 14, 1938 in Manning, the son of the late John Allen and Ola Thigpen Corbett. He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Manning and St. Peter’s Lodge #54.

Surviving besides his wife, JoAnn, are one son, John Ashley Corbett Jr., and wife, Von of Manning; two daughters, Kathy Kline and husband Richard and Sharon Pollard and husband Al, all of Columbia; five sisters, Mary Lotwis and husband Bill, Johnnie Mae Repsher and husband John and Helen Weeks, all of Manning; Virginia Brago of Goose Creek and Lois Kennedy and husband Kenneth of Kingstree; five grandsons, Corey and Chase Corbett, Will and Drew Lowman and Zachary Kline; four granddaughters, Ella and Anna Kline, Taylor Lowman and Summer Corbett.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 6, 2005, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Pec Chatham officiating. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church of Manning, P.O. Box 747, Manning; Manning First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 610, Manning; or St. Peter’s Lodge #54, P.O. Box 12, Manning.

Perhaps lifelong friend, Gene Nalley summed up Mr. John best.

“John has a servant’s heart,” Nalley said. “He would always find a way to solve any problem and was always willing to share whatever he had. He was there to help and do for people.”
