Joseph C. Wheeler

Joseph Cornell “JC” Wheeler, 71, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, on Oct. 30, 1934, he was a son of the late Joseph Emerson Wheeler and Generetta McElveen Wheeler. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, he accepted Christ in his youth and joined Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed. He retired from Carolina Furniture Works of Sumter.

He was twice married, first to the former Essie Mae Rollerson and this union was blessed with three children; and secondly to the former Frenchola Mack and this union was blessed with two children.

Survivors include his wife, Frenchola Mack Wheeler of the home in Sumter; one son, Joseph C. Wheeler Jr. of Woodbridge, Va.; two stepsons, Michael Mack of Columbia and James A. (Laura) Smith of Sumter; four daughters, Loretta Wheeler of Sumter, Cynthia (Eddison) Johnson of Woodbridge, Jerry L. “Tommy” Hargrove of Des Moines, Iowa and Lois Wheeler of New Zion; three sisters, Eula Mae Gamble of New Zion, Hermetta Kennedy of Columbia, and Wilhelmina Smith of Pomona, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James E. Wheeler; four brothers, John Wesley, George, Thomas and John Oscar Wheeler; one sister, Verlie Wheeler; and one granddaughter, Latoya Wheeler.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Turbeville, with the Rev. Doug Witherspoon officiating and Minster Perry Taft assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of theses arrangement.

Orcelia Jane Wood

ITHACA, N.Y. — Orcelia Jane “OJ” Wood, 60, of Summerton, and formerly of Ithaca, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at her home in Summerton.

OJ is survived by her husband, Robert “Woody” Wood; her sons, Jody Metz and Tim (Dawn) Metz; her daughters, Kim (Tim) Smith and Tammy (Bob) Hart; and her grandchildren, Jonathon, Nicolas, Aurora and Charelene Metz and Samantha, Catherine and Taelor Hart. She is also survived by her sister, Diane “Kate” Bernan; her brother, Sterry Carson Kimball; nephews, Mark and Brian Taggart and Jake (Laurie) Wood; and her sister-in-law, Enid Wood.

In addition to her parents, OJ was also predeceased by her son, Scott A. Metz.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 27, 2006, at the Bangs Funeral Home.

Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Donations in OJ’s memory may be made to Tuomey Hospice Services, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 410, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bangs Funeral Home of Ithaca was in charge of arrangements.

Clyde H. Lowder

Clyde H. Lowder, 82, husband of Jewell Richburg Lowder, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 22, 1922, in Manning, he was a son of the late Henry H. and Edith Haley Lowder. He was a retired plumber, a World War II Army veteran, and a member of Clarendon Church of God.

Surviving besides his wife of Alcolu are a son, Mike (Patty) Lowder of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Janet (Les) Moore of Bennettsville; three sisters, Marie Stoudenmire of Charleston, Corine Thompson of Bennettsville and Pat Smith of McCall; adopted brother, Tommy Reynolds of Florida; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steve Lowder, and a brother, Roy Lowder.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 24, 2005, in Clarendon Church of God with Pastor Ronald Newton officiating, assisted by John Brewer.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God, P.O. Box 387, Manning, S.C. 29102.

James D. McLeod

James Demous McLeod, the son of the late Demous McLeod and Alean Kendrick McLeod, was called by God to eternal rest on Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

He was born June 5, 1915, in Sumter County, in the town of Rembert.

James received his formal education in the schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert. He served in World War II. Later years, he was united in holy matrimony to Lueginia Conyers and they moved to Philadelphia, Pa. After returning to South Carolina, he joined Chapel AME Church in Paxville.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory, a loving wife, Lueginia McLeod of home; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Six sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 25, 2005, at Chapel AME Church, located in Paxville, with the Rev. William Scott, pastor, officiating.

Services were entrusted to Blackwell-Jenkins Funeral Home of Manning.

Annie Lee Thames

NORFOLK, Va. — Annie Lee Thames, 53, died July 13, 2005, at Sentra Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

Born June 5, 1952, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Gennie Thames and Bessie Pugh Thames. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon. After returning home, she was employed at Briggs Nursing Home. She accepted Christ and joined Mount Zero Missionary Baptist, where she served on the junior choir and Sunday school.

Survivors include one son, Christopher (Diahann) Thames of Virginia Beach, Va.; three brothers, Esaw (Queen) Thames of Manning, Jacob Thames of Patterson, N.J., and Gennie (Cookie) Thames; three sisters, Bessie Walters of Summerton, Hattie (Clyde) Holiday of Sumter, and Gladys Thames of Baltimore, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, Bishop Jeffery Johnson, eulogist, assisting the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, Ministers Terry Johnson and Lee Harvin.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Barwick

REMBERT – Charles Ervin Barwick Sr., 72, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 16, 1934, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charles Levi and Alice Logan Barwick. He was a merchant and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving are two sons, Charles (Wanda) Ervin Barwick Jr. of Summerville and Mark Anthony Barwick of Manning; four sisters, Ruby Bryant of Columbia, Edith Hardy and Esther Thomas, both of Manning, and Lois Poston of Great Falls; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Barwick and Ethridge Barwick.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, July 30, 2006, at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Leo Robert Ey

Leo Robert Ey, 81, husband of Barbara Medlock Ey, died Monday, July 31, 2006.

Born July 19, 1925, in Fremont, Virginia, he was a son of the late William Charles and Lilly Rudd Ey. He retired after 42 years of service with the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company and Georgia Pacific Corporation. Mr. Ey served in the U. S. Army during WWII, and was a member, past deacon and elder of The Presbyterian Church at Manning.

He is survived by his wife of Manning; a son, J. Michael (Marion) Ey of Columbia; two daughters, Linda (Jim) Cronican of Birmingham, Alabama, and Marsha (Marshall) Sasser of Conway; six grandchildren, Amy Cronican and Rebecca (Paul) Strelow of Spartanburg, Matthew Cronican of Birmingham, John and Charles Proctor of Conway and Laney Ey of Columbia; two great grandchildren, Abby and Blake Strelow.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2700 Middleburg Drive #240, Columbia, S.C. 29204, or to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Harold Frierson

Harold Frierson, 48, of Manning died Sunday, July 23, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident..

He was born Sept. 9, 1957, in Manning, a son of the late George Frierson and Loretta Brunson Frierson.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1975 graduate of Manning High School. He attended Claflin University in Orangeburg. He accepted Christ as Savior. He was a member of Beulah AME Church. He was employed with McCoy Nursing Facility in Bishopville.

Survivors include his fiancee, Margaret Junious of the home; a son, Dyguon (Lateefah) Frierson of Sumter; a daughter, Marquetta Frierson of Atlanta; and two daughters raised as his own, Maria Stukes and Denise Jones, both of Columbia; five brothers, Ronald (Shirley) Frierson of Sumter, George Frierson, Donald Frierson, Calvin (Rosalin) Blair, Freddie (Diane) Bethea, all of Manning; two sisters, Diane Blanding of Manning, Patricia Bethea of Bronx, N.Y., two grandchildren; and two grandchildren reared as his own.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Beulah AME Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Emanuel Davis presiding, assisted by the Rev. W. J. Frierson, the Rev. Major Lloyd and the Rev. Larry Davis, eulogist.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were St. James Masonic Lodge No. 2.

Honorary pallbearers were Beulah AME Church Sons of Allen and Manning High School Class of 1975.

Floral bearers were Queen of Sheba Chapter No. 2 OES/Barbara Chapter No. 16 OES.

Honorary floral bears were Beulah AME Women’s Missionary Society and Manning High School Class of 1975.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Joe W. Johnson

Joe William “Boogie” Johnson, 46, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Dec. 21, 1958, in the Jordan community, he was a son of Bernice Hilton Johnson and the late Joe Louise Johnson. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and he was a member of Society Hill AME Church. Prior to his illness, he was employed with the construction industry.

Survivors besides his mother, Bernice Hilton Johnson of Manning, include one sister, Pinese (Edward) Carter of Sumter; one niece, Shanese Tia Carter of Sumter; one nephew, Edward Carter Jr. of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Society Hill AME Church, Jordan community, with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, Curtis M. Cantey, Leroy Green and Effie Hilton officiating.

Burial was in Union Cypress Church cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
