Sarah Danforth
WEST COLUMBIA — Sarah L. Danforth of S.C. Episcopal Home at Still Hopes in West Columbia, SC, retired journalist and civic leader, died on Monday, December 20, 2004, at the age of 90. Known to her friends as Sally, she was the widow of Brig. Gen. E.C.B. Danforth, Jr.
Mrs. Danforth was a journalist who originated and wrote The State newspaper’s “Service Set” column, a weekly social and news column about military personnel at Fort Jackson and the greater Columbia community. As a freelance writer, she also had articles published in Washington , DC and San Francisco, CA.
Married in Columbia in 1944, Mrs. Danforth lived in Washington , DC; Tokyo, Japan; Guam; and San Francisco during her husband’s active military career. She and her late husband retired in Columbia from The Presidio, California in 1954.
In Columbia, Mrs. Danforth served with many organizations in writing and public relations capacities. She wrote publicity for the Town Theatre and the Columbia Music Festival. She was a former member of the boards of the Columbia Chapter of the American Red Cross, Columbia Music Festival, USO, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, and the Richland County Tuberculosis Association.
She was a past president and Honorary Life Member of the Columbia Garden Club; member of the Thursday Study Club; Forest Lake Club; Fort Jackson Officers Club; and served in civic and charitable organizations at the national level during her husband’s military career.
Mrs. Danforth, the former Sarah Louise Lucas, was born April 10, 1914, in Greensboro, NC, the daughter of the late Leslie V. and Mary S. Lucas. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the Boyd Business University in Washington , DC.
A long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, she was a vice president of the Daughters of the Holy Cross, Chairman of Christian Education Committee, and Chairman of the Trinity Bazaar.
She is survived by her son, David R. Danforth of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Joan T. Danforth of Columbia, granddaughter, Courtney S. Danforth of Columbia, SC; grandson, Jonathan T. Danforth of Columbia, Jill A. Danforth, granddaughter-in-law of Columbia, SC; great-grandson, Edward W. Danforth of Columbia, SC, and nephews, Stephen Dodson and Jerry Dodson of Newport News, VA.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia SC. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Memorials can be made to the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, and the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community.

LEXINGTON — Charles E. Jones, 77, retired Navy, died December 13, 2004.
He is survived by his son, Charles E. Jones, III; daughter, Cheryl Culbreth; grandchildren, Mary and John Stroud, Megan Culbreth; great-grandchildren, Katelin Stroud, and Keyon and Kristopher Sloan.

Diane Reid
SURFSIDE BEACH — Diane Marie Andrews Reid, 59, passed away on the 19th of December 2004, after a short, heroic battle with brain cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Many thank yous to all the doctors, nurses, Hospice caregivers, good friends and neighbors who helped in many different ways.
Diane was born July 28, 1945, in Bristol, Conn., daughter of the late Ralph Berry Andrews and Cecile Mary Lessard Andrews. Diane and her parents moved to Andrews, SC, when she was three years old. Diane attended Andrews schools, graduating in 1963. She enjoyed being in the marching band, because she got to travel out of town. Diane became a registered nurse at the Medical University School of Nursing in Charleston, SC, in 1966. During this time, Diane fell in love with Eugene Reid, a Citadel cadet, and got married after graduation. Diane worked at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, Junction City Hospital in Kansas, Charleston Health Dept. and retired from SC Waccamaw District DHEC after 28 years of service in April 2003, as a registered nurse. Diane’s favorite part of her job was working with handicapped children. Diane received many awards from the SC DHEC in recognition for her hard work, dedication and professionalism as a nurse for the Waccamaw District DHEC. Diane was an avid reader of American and English literature and poetry. She just loved to read, paint in water colors and listen to Irish and classical music. Visiting museums to see art work was a must. Traveling to places she read about was an adventure. Diane planned well in advance; especially in the British Isles and European continent.
Survivors include her devoted and loving husband, Eugene Reid and their son, Christopher E.C. Reid of Surfside Beach and their daughter, Denise R. Reid of Winter Park, FL, Diane’s younger sister, Jane Burkette and her husband Ronald of Georgetown, SC, Mr. Reid’s mother, Nina S. Reid of Boynton Beach, FL, his brother, Leonard Reid and his wife, Melissa Reid of Port St. Lucie, FL, Diane’s nephew, Donnie Burkette of Columbia, SC, and her nieces, Melissa Prosser and her husband, Sam, Jennifer Cherry and husband, Jason of Georgetown, SC, Robin Reid Stone and husband, Andrew Stone of Chicago, IL and Lauren Kate Reid of Miami, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Burnt Gin for Handicapped Children, Attn: Marie Almone, Box 101106, Columbia, SC 29211.
A memorial tribute will be held 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 2, 2005, next to the Ashley River at White Point Gardens and the Fort Sumter House “The Battery” in Charleston, SC.
