James C. Johnson

James Clarence “J.C.” Johnson, 72, died July 9, 2005, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born Nov. 6, 1932, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Nellie Johnson. He was reared by his grandparents, the late Henry and Almeta Watson Johnson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter. After high school, he entered the Air Force, where he served for 10 years, receiving an honorable discharge on May 19, 1961. Mr. Johnson resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he worked as a truck driver. After returning to Sumter in 1972, he worked in various jobs as a truck driver, construction worker and a mechanic.

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Johnson; two grandchildren, Latesha Gives and Candance Gives; one great-grandchild, Demira, all of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Isaac (Bertha) Johnson of Jasper, Fla.; two nephews, Isaac Johnson II of Gaithersburg, Md., and Gerren Johnson of Irvine, Calif.; four special cousins, Selena Bethune, Cynthia Y. Bethune and Raymond Chatman, all of Sumter, and Cleo (Brenda) Bethune of Kew Gardens, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his mother and grandparents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Carr, six uncles and four aunts.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, 2005, in the parlor of Job’s Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Franklin Johnson officiating.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest E. Infinger

Ernest Emmanuel Infinger, 79, husband of Cathy Hodge Infinger, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at his home in Manning.

Born Dec. 1, 1925, in St. George, he was a son of the late Louis Emmanuel Infinger and the late Lillian George Infinger Elmore. He was a retired electrician, a United States Army veteran of WWII, and a Mason.

He is survived by his wife of Manning; three sons, James Larry Infinger of Charleston, Ernest Emmanuel Infinger Jr. of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Michael Adam Infinger of Manning; two daughters, Carol Sue Griffin of Atlanta, Ga., and Sandra Roseanne Infinger of Charleston; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Emory Joseph Infinger and three sisters, Catherine Thomas, Corrine Infinger and Nellie Marchant.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Salter officiating.

Burial followed in Rehobeth Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Ruth S. Farmers

Ruth Sanders Farmers, 93, widow of James “Lit” Farmer, died July 15, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 18, 1911, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Gabriel and Clara Coley Sanders. At an early age, she committed her life to God and served faithfully at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood. After moving to Sumter, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church and dedicated her services to the following ministries: Senior Missionary, the Prayer Band, Wide Awake Ministry, the gospel choir and church school teacher.

Survivors include two sisters, Leona Stukes of St. Matthew and Vivian S. Brunson of Sumter; half-sister, Evelyn Johnson of Manning; a devoted nephew, Roosevelt Stukes of Sumter; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her only daughter, Alice Farmer, and several siblings.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Velda Rucker and the Rev. Willie Prince.

Burial was in Bradford Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Charlene R. Buddin

Charlene Mae Rooney Buddin, 71, wife of William J. “Bill” Buddin Jr., died Saturday, July 16, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1933, in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Donald M. Rooney and the late Vivian Larsen Birman. A graduate of Oklahoma A&M, she was a United States Air Force veteran, bookkeeper for Clarendon Exterminating, a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where she taught the Nelle Wells Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Myrtle Strange Circle and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Virginia’s Pride Garden Club, Domino Dollies and the Red Hat Club.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are two sons, William J. “Jake” (Elaine) Buddin III and Charles A. “Chuck” (Pam) Buddin of Manning; two daughters, Pam (Jeff) Currie of Manning and Debra (Reid) Mattison of Zionsville, Ind.; grandchildren, Renny Buddin, H. B. Buddin, Caroline Buddin, Justin Currie, Claire and Clark Mattison.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 9, 2005, in the Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Linwood Ashwell Robinson III

Linwood Ashwell “Lonnie” Robinson, III, 30, husband of Emily Wilson Robinson, died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at MUSC, Charleston.

Born September 28, 1975, he was a son of L. A. Robinson Jr. and Dina Smith Robinson. He was a graduate of Clemson University, a timber buyer for Martin Brothers, and a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife and parents of Summerton are a stepdaughter, Delaney Peeler of the home; two sons, Linwood Ashwell “Wells” Robinson, IV and Wilder Hayes Robinson of the home; a sister, Tara R. (Jake) Holliday of Columbia; a brother, Cary Thomas Robinson of Central; maternal grandmother, Louise Carroway Smith of Summerton; paternal grandmother, Meverline Singletary Robinson of Summerton; and special family, Kaye Smith and family of Atlanta.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Tomy Smith and paternal grandfather, Linwood A. Robinson Sr.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rob Pierce.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ryan Thigpen, Ryan Martin, Tripp Montgomery, Hunter Spivey, Justin Woodard, Joe Avin, Rhett Long and Jake Holliday.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Hall Athletic Dept., P. O. Box 609, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

George Riley Sr.

George Riley Sr., husband of Rosa Green Riley, entered eternal rest on Friday, July 7, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

He was born in Clarendon County on Oct. 9, 1939, a son of the late Jacob Riley and Phronie Hampton Riley. Mr. Riley attended Spring Grove School and was a member of Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini. He was employed for many years as a farmer, where he worked for Fox Tindal.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Green Riley of Rimini; one son, George (Lillie) Riley Jr. of Rimini; three daughters, Betty (Willie) Glover of Manning, Dorothy Canty of Sumter, and Catherine Bennett of Rimini; four brothers, Benjamin (Lottie) Riley, Esaw (Betty Ann) Riley, Louis Riley, all of Rimini, and Joseph Riley of Sumter; three sisters, Elenora Simmons of Pinewood, Lena Ragin of Rimini and the Rev. Mary Lou Brailsford of Sumter; one additional brother-in-law, George White; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with Elder Joseph Powell, pastor, assisting the Revs. Leroy Greene, Duwine Sinkler, Warren Hatcher and Amos Hatcher.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery, Rimini.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Lena Eliza K. Monlyn

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lena Eliza King Monlyn, 68, wife of Slyvester Monlyn, died July 8, 2006, at Boward General Medical, Fort Lauderdale.

Born July 5, 1938, in Manning, she was a daughter of the Rev. Emanuel King Sr. and Lena Dozier King. She received her formal education in the public schools of Manning. She was a member of William Chapel Christian Church. After moving to Fort Lauderdale, she joined Holy Mission of Jesus Christ, serving as president of the missionary society and ordained missionary. She was employed by Broward Medical Center and retired in 2000.

Survivors besides her husband, Slyvester Monlyn of the home, include two sons, Isaiah Lumpkin of the home and Samuel Alonza (Debbie) Burgess of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter, Ruby Dean Lumpkin of Pompano, Fla.; four brothers, the Rev. Damon (Helen) King of Paterson, N.J., Charles (Earnestine) King, Emanuel (Jannette) King Jr., Herbert (Edith) King, all of Manning; seven sisters, Cora Evans, Addie Montgomery, Hagar L. King, Sadie (Melvin) Lampkin, Edith Small, all of Manning, Rosa (Allen) Wilson of Florence, and Ida (Richard) Pompay of Greeleyville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at William Chapel Christian Church in Manning, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, assisting Elder Samuel Alonza Burgess, the Rev. Harry Hannah and Minister Isaiah Lumpkin.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Jesna Mae J. Meggs

Jesna Mae Jordan Meggs, 73, wife of 53 years to Joseph Lynwood Meggs Sr., died Friday, July 14, 2006, in Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Born March 10, 1933, in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Jesse K. and Hannah Mae Anderson Jordan. She retired from C&S Bank in Florence. She was a member of Pink Dogwood Garden Club, Summerton Baptist Church and the Winsome Ladies Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Bruce Meggs; and five brothers, Jesse, Jimmy, Ashton, Jerry and Lynn.

Surviving besides her husband of Summerton are two sons, Joseph L. “Joey” (Sandra) Meggs Jr. of Indialantic, Fla., and Steve (Debbie) Meggs of Greenville; a sister, Jean (Pete) McDonald of Hartsville; a brother, Harrell (Betty Jo) Jordan of Florence; and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Woody, Jeremy, Jordan and Jessica Meggs.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 17, 2006, in Summerton Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

Burial followed in the Florence Memorial Gardens in Florence.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church, G.I.F.T. Fund, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Franklin R. Edwards

Franklin Roosevelt Edwards, 72, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 20, 1934, in Lee County, he was the son of the late Prince Edwards Sr. and Rosa Williams Edwards. He was also the widower of Mae Thelma Wilson Edwards. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he joined Galilee Baptist Church, where he served as a dedicated member until his health began to fail.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann (Esau) Walker of Sumter and Sara (James) Prince of Manning; one son, Robert Lee Edwards of Sumter; one stepson, Jimmie (Martha) Wilson of Sumter; three sisters, Mary Moses and Rosa (Carl) Jefferson, both of Mayesville, and Mahalia Benbow of Providence, R.I.; one brother, Michael L. Sanders Sr. of Sumter; two sisters-in-law, Mattie Edwards and Jannie Edwards, both of Mayesville; one daughter-in-law, Florena Andrews Edwards of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Roosevelt Edwards Jr.; and one stepson, Herbert L. Wilson.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, from John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, with the Rev. Eugene Myers officiating, eulogist.

Floral bearers were family and friends.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Burial was in the Mayesville Cemetery, Mayesville.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
