Lottie Mae Boatwright

BRONX, N.Y. – Lottie Mae Boatwright, 65, died July 11, 2006, at Monteiforre Medical Center, Bronx.

Born Oct. 20, 1940, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Janie Dukes Boatwright and the late Lawrence Boatwright Sr. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lady of faith and believed in God.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Lee Boatwright of Jacksonville, Fla. and Lawrence Boatwright of Bronx; one brother, Elijah Boatwright of Sumter; stepbrother, Timothy Lee Wilson of Hollywood, Fla.; two sisters, Ilona Boatwright James of Sumter and Mercelene Boatwright of Philadelphia, Pa.; three stepsisters, Julia Abraham and Johnnie Mae Davis, both of Philadelphia, and Juanita Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C.; and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas W. Chandler

Thomas Wilbur Chandler, 85, husband of Mary Lee Floyd Chandler, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Thomas Wilbur and Mamie Green Chandler. He was a retired manager in the cutting department of Summerton Uniform. Mr. Chandler was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Alcolu are a daughter, Hilda (Robert) Warner of Summerville; two sons, Tommy Ryan (Vikki) Chandler of Silverdale, Wash. and Charles Glenn Chandler of Manning; a brother, Lindberg Chandler of Charleston; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, William and Gleaton Chandler; and a sister, Louise Parker.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Morris Smith, Bobby Floyd and Donald Mims officiating.

Burial followed in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Building Funds of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 391, Manning, S.C. 29102 and Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3709 St. James Road, Lake City, S.C. 29560.

George T. Nelson Sr.

George Theodore Nelson Sr., 78, husband of Barbara Hetue Nelson, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at his home in Summerton.

Born Dec. 22, 1926, in Closter, N.J., he was a son of the late William G. and Helen Phillips Nelson. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, retired from the oil burner repair business, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a nephew, Kenneth Grotz of Bradenton, Fla.; and a brother, William Nelson of Norwood, N.J.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Grotz, and a stepdaughter, Cheryl Ann Pillion.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Moritz Funeral Home in Closter, N.J., with the Rev. Bob Smith officiating.

Burial followed in the Westwood Cemetery in Westwood, N.J.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

W. James Rawlinson

William James Rawlinson, 90, widower of Ruth DuRant Rawlinson, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 12, 1914, in Manning, he was a son of the late C.F. and Christian Hawley Rawlinson. He attended Clemson University, was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a retired farmer, and a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are niece and nephew, George and Margaret Ann Rodgers of Clemson; two grandchildren, Catherine I. Rodgers of Rock Hill and Elizabeth Rodgers (Will) Gregory of Clemson; two nieces, Nancy R. (John) Harvell and Mary R. (Alex) Bensen.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2005, in New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charlie Tyler and the Rev. Mike Sorrell officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Joseph Charles Sauner

Joseph Charles Sauner, 84, widower of Marguerite Vinsryg Sauner, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born May 15, 1921, in Morristown, Ohio, he was a son of the late Govie and Laura Gossett Sauner. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and a B-25 Pilot, and was a retired trouble board operator for Alltel.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula Jo (Jeff) Pearl of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a son, Denny (Gayle) Sauner of Manning; a brother, Marvin Sauner of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, June Ford of Grand Island, N.Y.; two grandsons, Randall Scott Sauner of Louisville, Kentucky and Douglas Mark Sauner of Waldwick, N.J.; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Cassadaga American Legion Post #1280, 228 Maple Avenue, Cassadaga, N.Y. 14718.

Jimmie Simms

Jimmie Simms, 74, widower of the late Rosa Mae McFadden Simms, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1930 in Asheville, N.C., he was the only child of the late James and Rosa Brock Simms. His parents died when he was a young boy. He moved to Sumter and was raised by his grandmother.

He was a high school graduate and attended Morris College. He served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army and received the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. His most sufficient duty assignment was Hg. Co. Yukon Cond., Ladd Air Force Base, Alaska, where he received an honorable discharge.

He was employed at Crescent Tools for many years until he retired. He sang with the original Palmetto Gospel Singers as well as other gospel groups for many years. In his later years, he joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Willie L. McFadden of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Timothy J. Robinson of Charleston, Robert J. Simms of Sumter, Jeremiah Simms of Dahlgren, Va., and Edward Simms of Spring Lake, N.C.; a daughter, Rosa D. Simms (Everett) Stokes of Manning; one brother-in-law, Sam McFadden of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Wilhelmenia Lasane of Sumter, Jessie Mae Butler of New Zion and Lucille Wilson of Georgia; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that are deeply grieved by his passing.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Wilson officiating.

Burial followed in the Bradford cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert Thames

Herbert Thames, 52, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Nov. 12, 1952, in Manning, he was a son of the late James Thames Sr. and the late Rethea Major Thames. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Afterwards, he attended Benedict College, Columbia. He united his affiliation with Mt. Zero Baptist Church and was active with the youth department. He was also formerly employed with Campbell Soup for 20 years.

Survivors include two brothers, Jinmmie Thames of Manning and James Thames Jr. of Oakland, Calif.; one sister, Janet (Levester) Canty of West Columbia; one nephew, Bernard Robert (Michelle) Nelson of Atlanta.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Fleming & DeLaine Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Coakley Richburg and the Rev. Terry Johnson officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Sarah H. Blanding

Sarah Hunter Blanding, 98, widow of Raymond D. Blanding, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, in Raleigh, N.C., in a nursing facility.

Born April 14, 1908, in Summerton, she was the youngest of five children of S. Andrew Hunter and Elizabeth Davis Hunter.

Mrs. Blanding was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of the Sumter Junior Welfare League and a garden club. She attended Winthrop College.

Surviving are a daughter, Emily Blanding (William) Graham of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery with Dr. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Memorials maybe made to a charity of one’s choice.
