Loretta Daramola

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Loretta Elaine Jones Daramola, 52, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Shands-Jacksonville Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1953, in Summerton, she was a daughter of Sarah Gaymon Jones and the late Walter Cleo Jones Sr.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1971 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and a graduate of Massey Business College Class of 1972 in Jacksonville, Fla. She was an employee of Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Jacksonville, Fla., for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her mother, Sarah Gaymon Jones of Summerton; a daughter, Kemi Boman of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Albertus (Delores) Jones of Summerton; and a sister, Helen (Joe) Brailsford of Miami, Fla.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 10, 2006, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Bobby McDonald, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

David Michael Geddings

SUMTER – David Michael “Pete” Geddings, 49, husband of Linda Woudwyk Geddings of Sumter, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at his home in Sumter.

Born January 2, 1957, in Sumter, he was a son of the late John Henry and Jeanette Marie Geddings Geddings. He was a self-employed mechanic and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Sumter are two daughters, Julie (Scott) Hurley of Killeen, Texas and Paula Geddings of Sumter; five sisters, Sara Hopper of Oklahoma, Carolyn Breazeal of Houston, Gayle Brunson of Sumter, Barbara Miller of Texas and Doris Beard of Columbia; three brothers, John, Jackie and Danny Geddings, all of Sumter; and two grandsons.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Letitia Jones

Letitia Adams McLeod Hall Jones, 91, passed away on the evening of June 28, 2006 at her daughter’s residence.

Mrs. Jones was born June 28, 1915 in Manning to the late George T. and Letitia Lowder McLeod.

She was a faithful member of Couchton Baptist Church, where she enjoyed working in the nursery for many years.

Mrs. Jones retired from Belk’s Department Store after 33 years of service in the Children’s Department.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jo Hall Bodie, a stepdaughter, Ann Boyd, a son-in-law, William ‘Bill’ Bodie, and four grandchildren; Billie Jo (William) Brown, Gene (Kathy) Bodie, Norwood (Kristi) Bodie and Adam Bodie. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by Norwood A. Hall and Horace J. Jones.

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 30, 2006 in the Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Cribb, officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

E. Wallace Odom III

JOHNSONVILLE — E. Wallace Odom III, 22, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. Odom was born in Conway, a son of Edward Wallace Odom Jr. and Fairlyn Poston Odom. He graduated from Johnsonville High School in 2002 with honors and attended Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was a member of Johnsonville First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Johnsonville are a daughter, Emmeri Jayne Poston of Johnsonville; a brother, Will Bullock and his wife, Dixie, of Charleston; two nieces, Jade and Iris Bullock of Charleston; paternal grandparents, E.W. and Blanche G. Odom of Alcolu; a special friend, Jan Miles and her children, Miranda and Samantha Miles, all of Coward; and a number of loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Odom was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Percy D. Poston.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Johnsonville First Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to Johnsonville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1021, Johnsonville, S.C. 29555 or to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

Joenathon Walters

Joenathon “Joe” Walters, 68, husband of the late Vivian Devoe Walters, died Friday, June 24, 2005 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Walters was born in Clarendon County on March 31, 1937, a son of the late James Walters and Cornelia Mitchell Walters. He attended the public schools of the Clarendon County. He was a member of the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church. He was a former employee of Durant Construction and Way Brother’s Building & Supply. He was an authoritarian provider and very straight forward.

He is survived by six children, Margo (Michael) Billie of Hopkins, Willie Lee (Janice) Devoe of Perth Amboy, N.J., Audrey Walters of the home, Marvin (Sandra) Walters of Woodridge, N.J., Vermell Walters of Irvington, N.J., Vondral Walters of Woodridge; one sister, Dorothy Richardson of Summerton; one brother, Jerry (Odell) Walters of Deerfield, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one aunt, Helen M. Lawson of Pinewood; mother-in-law, Ethel Parker of Pinewood; eight sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law, and a special friend, Annie Lee Bennett of Summerton.

Funeral services were held at on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church with the Rev. Warren Hatcher officiating, assisted by the Rev. Amos Hatcher and Jacob Clark.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Reese Witherspoon Jr.

Reese Witherspoon Jr., 83, widower of Mamie Helton Witherspoon, died June 18, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born March 16, 1922, in the Sugar Hill community of Manning, he was a son of the late Reese Witherspoon Sr. and Mella Mack Witherspoon. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he became a member of Mt. Chapel Baptist Church. Fishing, hunting and farming were some of his most enjoyable moments.

Survivors include two sons, Harold (Vermell) Witherspoon of Manning and Bernard (Teresa) Witherspoon of Fort Sills, Okla.; two daughters, Linda (Harold) Shelton of Troy, Mich., and Persephone (Howard) Powell of Manning; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 24, 2005, at Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, pastor, assisting the Revs. George Harper and O.J. Hannah.

Burial was in Witherspoon Cemetery in the Sugar Hill community of Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Brandon M. Barwick

Brandon Michael Barwick, infant son of James and Sandra Barwick, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Survivors in addition to his parents are one brother, Gabriel Barwick of the home; maternal grandparents, Richard and Cathryn Snow of Pinewood; paternal grandparents, Richard and Cathy Barwick of Manning and David and Lori Pack of Sumter; and great-grandparents, Lorine and Billy Brunson, Joe and Margerite Barwick, and Edward and Janet Snow, all of Sumter.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2005, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Bowman officiating.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Leola W. Bennett

Leola “LaLa” Witherspoon Bennett, 81, widow of Henry Douglas “Buster” Bennett, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

Born May 12, 1924, in the Snow Hill section of Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Johnson Witherspoon and Queen Jacobs Witherspoon. She received her education in Williamsburg and Clarendon counties. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist. After marriage, she joined Williams Chapel Christian Church. After the death of her husband, she reunited with St. John Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She had recently joined Historical Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton.

Survivors include one son, Louis M. Bennett of Manning; two daughters, Lena B. Mack and Dr. Dora B. (Nathaniel) Dyson, both of Manning; one brother, Willie David (Bernice) Witherspoon of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Louise W. Mack of Manning, Lillie M. Wright of Baltimore, Md., and Eva B. Pauley of Hartsville; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 18-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one infant, two sons, two sisters, two brothers and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 1, 2005, at Historical Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Church Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. Ruthie Moore and Bernard Richburg.

Burial was in Bennett’s Cemetery, Kingstree Highway/261 East Manning.

T. Frankie Conyers

Thurmond Frankie Conyers, 58, died Friday, July 1, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 26, 1946, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late LeRoy McKenzie Conyers and the late Julia Watts Conyers Warren. He was retired from Campbell’s Soup. In his youth, he attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving are three brothers, Charles L. “Roy” Conyers and Thomas A. Conyers of Sumter and Gene Conyers of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Conyers Sims.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 3, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. W. Kevin Cribb officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

Sandra D. Cooper

Sandra Deloris Cooper, 61, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 23, 1943, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Lawrence “Liven” Cooper Sr. and Mary Elizabeth McFadden Cooper.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, attending Walker-Gamble School in New Zion. She received a certificate in New York as a certified key punch operator and also a degree in health care. She joined Melina Presbyterian Church at an early age, serving later as a member of the adult choir and the trustee board.

Survivors besides her parents include one son, Michael (Sandra) Cooper of Sumter; two brothers, George Cooper of Gable and Albert (Patricia) Cooper of New Zion; five sisters, Catherine (Flavian) Jemmott of Bronx, N.Y., Bessie and Carolyn Cooper, both of New Zion, Mary Cooper and Valeray (Charles) Eaddy, both of Gable; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two aunts; and four uncles.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Bernard Cooper.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardena with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.
