Letha C. Fleming

Letha Christmas Fleming, 70, widow of the Rev. Plowden Fleming, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Tillman Christmas and the late Pearl Floyd Christmas. Mrs. Fleming was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are a son, the Rev. Edward E. (Allene) Fleming of Sumter; four daughters, Debbie (Billy) Burrows, Lisa (Jeff) Nettles, all of Sumter, Sharon (Wayne) Stokes, Tammy (Dallas) Herring, all of Turbeville; two brothers, Jackson Leroy Christmas and Tommy Christmas, both of Sumter; two sisters, Clara Lee Mitchell of Spartanburg and Virginia McDonald of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will forever be grateful to the many members of the church that she so dearly loved.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2005, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Hunt officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy, 718 Boulevard Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Lorena B. Geddings

Lorena Belle Bartlette Geddings, 67, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Inez Tyler Bartlette and the late Joseph N. Bartlette. Mrs. Geddings was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and was employed by Companion Healthcare of Florence.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; her former husband, Grady H. Geddings of Sumter; a son, Grady Michael “Mickey” Geddings of Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Gwendolyn Nash and Teresa Volking, both of Columbia; a brother, Joseph N. Bartlette Jr. of Summerton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2005 in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Albert Gibson Sr.

Albert “W.C.” Gibson Sr., 68, husband of Mary Agnes James Gibson, died June 24, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 5, 1936, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ocelia Magwood Gibson. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined the Springhill AME Church of Summerton and later joined Calvary Baptist Church of Pinewood. He was employed by Sumter Cabinet Co. for 27 years.

Survivors include a loving and dedicated wife, Mary A. Gibson of the home; two sons, Albert Gibson Jr. (Chandra McFadden) of Charlotte, N.C., and Geoffrey L. Gibson of the home; one daughter, Angelia K. Gibson (Laron Miller) of the home; three brothers, Willie (Katie) Gibson of Sumter, Joseph Gibson of Baltimore, Md., and Hugh E. Gibson of Jamaica, N.Y.; six sisters, Aaliyah Pasha of Columbia, Minnie (Llewellyn) Gail of Babylon, N.Y., Fannie (Dr. Jeremiah) Williams of Baltimore, Geraldine (Samuel) Collins of Newport News, Va., Christalee Bradley and Susan Gibson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters-in-law, Bessie Williams, Mollie (Sammie) Ross, Ethel (Earl) Bracy, all of Sumter, and Bessie James of Clariton, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Pinckney James of Chicago; three aunts, Virginia Mellison and Eartha Smith, both of Baltimore, Frances Washington of Jamaica, N.Y.; one uncle, Albert Magwood of Baltimore; a special niece, Deanna Deas of Sumter; a special nephew, Frank Williams of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 30, 2005, at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, assisted by the Rev. L. Barnes.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Mae B. Logan

Ethel Mae Benbow Logan, 85, widow of Charles H. Logan, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at her home.

Born May 19, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel “Barge” Benbow Sr. and Oree Clark Benbow and stepdaughter of the late Essie Gibson Benbow.

Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, Ethel Mae graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in 1937. She then furthered her education at Morris College. In her youth, she was a faithful member of Laurel Hill AME Church in the Davis Station community. Upon relocating to Sumter, she attended Mount Pisgah AME Church.

On Jan. 3, 1940, Ethel Mae was united in holy matrimony to Charles H. Logan. This union was blessed with one daughter, Gloria Jean.

Ethel Mae was an intricate part of a rich history in Sumter. She and Charlie proudly owned and operated several successful restaurant businesses, including Green Leaf Café, Cream Land, Lincoln Café (renamed Logan’s Café) and Charlie Logan’s Café. Ethel began in the business in 1940 and the Logan Café continued to operate until May 2001, when her health began to fail. The Logan Café remains a fixture in the tapestry of East Liberty Street, as it was Ethel Mae’s aspiration to return to the business and her café family.

Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Logan Farmer of the home; a niece raised in the home as a granddaughter, Sonya (Michael) McKnight-Finklin of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Betty (James) Stover of Sumter; a stepson, Charles H. Logan Jr. of Manhattan, N.Y.; two grandsons, James W. (Rolanda) Stover III and Charles L. Stover Sr., both of Sumter; a brother, Nathaniel Benbow Jr.; a sister, Artelle Benbow Brown, both of Sumter; a special cousin, Alice Jones of La Mott, Pa.; and a host of adopted children, nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Eva Benbow, Yvonne Holmes and Gracye McKnight; and a brother, Moses “Son” Benbow.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Mount Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, with the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. and Min. Coleen Cox Ballah assisting.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Touchberry Timmons

Frances Touchberry Timmons, 90, widow of Thomas Newton Timmons, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, in Mariner Health of Sumter-West.

Born Nov. 15, 1914, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Jackson Tindal Touchberry Sr. and the late Eunette Bethune Touchberry. She attended nursing school at Spartanburg General Hospital. She was self-employed, and was a retired executive housekeeper in the hotel industry, and a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Henrietta (Jeff) Tisdale of Sumter; sisters-in-law, Mildred Touchberry and Janet Trembley; nieces and nephews, Jackson Touchberry III, Gary Touchberry, Jeff Tisdale Jr., Cyndy T. Cherry, Marian T. Smith, Mitzi Rothermel, Nancy Gilmore, Donna Roberts, Jack Foxworth, Phillip Foxworth Jr., Patsy Mims, Gregg Touchberry Jr., David Quinn, Lee Quinn, Traci Quinn, Debbie Mathis, Neil Muckenfuss, and Virginia Lynne Littleton; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Ann Timmons; four brothers, Daniel, J.T., Gregg and Elmore M. Touchberry; two sisters, Eunice Foxworth and Jacqueline T. Prescott.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 18, 2005, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery Fund, c/o Mary Truesdale, 6 Mayland Drive, Summerton, SC 29148.

Alma W. Brock

Alma Witherspoon Brock, 77, widow of William “Buster” Brock Jr., died June 17, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born March 5, 1928, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Leola Witherspoon Garland and the late Willie Garland. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to St. Luke Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, on the missionary society, choir and as mother of the church.

Survivors include five sons, James (Linda) Brock of Sumter, Joe (Mary) Brock and Dan Brock, both of New York, N.Y., Robert (Gertie) Brock of Grayson, Ga., and William (Densie) Brock III of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Joan (Hollis) Landrum of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Willie (Lucille) Garland of Kingstree; three sisters, Shirley (Henry) Felder of Manning, Merlene Brown and Sarah Garland, both of Lake City; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville, with the Rev. Moses Wilson, pastor, the Rev. Sam Miller, officiating, assisting Elder Zander Davis, the Rev. Gary Miller and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in Hunter Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Emma A. Davis

Mrs. Emma Amos Davis, 98, of 17 Walsh Grove St., died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Beulah Amos. She was born in Clarendon County on Oct. 2, 1906.

Emma was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she received the Lord as her personal Savior and became a member of the Church of God By Faith, Inc. Emma was a faithful member of Sumter Number One, Summerton, and Congruity under the leadership of the Elders Griffin Kemp, Thomas Davis, C.P. McBride and Davis Lucas.

Emma was joined in wedlock to the late Mr. Robert Davis in 1933. To this union 10 children were born. She was a devoted and loving mother, respected by those who knew her.

She leaves to cherish her loving and precious memory, three sons, Henry A. Davis Sr. of Timmonsville, Elder David Davis and wife, Leona, and Elder Thomas Davis, both of Sumter; three daughters, Mrs. Eva Taylor and husband, Elder James, Miss Beulah Davis, both of Sumter, and Mrs. Betsy Sapp of New York, N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Idell Witherspoon and Mrs. Elma Johnson of Sumter; one additional daughter-in-law, Ms. Velray Davis of Winnsboro; 24 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Emma Amos Davis was preceded in death by four sons, Elijah, Willie, Austin and Ernest Davis, and three brothers, Olive, Cleveland and Shaw Amos.

Funeral services were held June 26, 2005, at the Church of God By Faith, Inc., with Elder James Lucas, pastor; Eulogist Elder André McBride, assisted by Elders James Gibbs, James Windham, Mack Wilson, James Taylor, David Davis, Edmond Johnson and Minister Brock Graham.

Burial followed in the Stokes Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Katie G. Harvin

Katie Gibson Harvin, 88, wife of the late Eugen Harvin, died June 22, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. She was born Oct. 29, 1916, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, a daughter to the late Rev. Purdy Gibson and Rosa Charles Gibson.

Mrs. Harvin was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and attended Voorhees College in Denmark and Morris College of Sumter and she was a member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by four sons, Harold (Lottie) Harvin, Ronald Harvin and Larry Harvin, all of Sumter, and Earl (Doris) Harvin of Charleston; three daughters, Barbara (Lucius) Williams and Patricia (Rick) Harvin, both of Sumter, and Jean Harvin of Silver Springs, Md.; one brother, Edward (Ruth) Gibson of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Edythe Clark of Pinwood; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight siblings, Alice, Ida, Annie, Mae, Margaret, Eloise, Arron, Steward and Lucius.

Funeral services, conducted by the Revs. Henry Pressley, Major Lloyd and Terry Johnson, were held on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the services.

Lueminda Kelly

Lueminda Kelly, 85, died June 18, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born June 8, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mose Kelly and Sallie Singleton Kelly Hay. At an early age, Lueminda accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was accepted in the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church fellowship, even though she was never able to physically attend, being an invalid all her life. She was admitted to Faith Healthcare Center, Florence, in 1962, where she remained for the past 42 years.

Survivors include one brother, Willie (Molly) Kelly; three sisters, Fannie Williams and Martha L. Lee, both of Jersey City, N.J., and Lillie McDuffy (Louise) of Willingboro, N.J.; one devoted niece, Eva Kelly Mouzon of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maggie Carter, and two brothers, Harmon Kelly and Lemose Kelly.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 23, 2005, in the Parlor of Job’s Mortuary, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston officiating, assisted by the Revs. Clinton Ceasar, Robert Green, Ralph W. Canty and Bishop Larry Carter.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.
