Barbara Kirk

Barbara Esther Bundenthal Kirk, child of God, and wife of Harold George Kirk (USAF, retired), entered into eternal life on June 22, 2005, after a valiant battle with leukemia (AML).

Mrs. Kirk was born in Lansing, Mich., on Sept. 25, 1927, one of six children born to the late Carl and Francis Bundenthal. She was raised in Augusta, Mo., and was married in St. Louis, Mo., on March 15, 1947, to Harold George Kirk, who had been discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in World War II. Mrs. Kirk attended schools in Augusta, Mo., and during her lifetime she traveled the world extensively. She taught English classes at Tseudo Women’s College in Tokyo, Japan. She was active in women’s bowling leagues, garnishing a large number of trophies.

Mrs. Kirk was an unselfish volunteer to her entire community wherever she lived and was frequently recognized for her dedication and excellent organizational skills. Mrs. Kirk was the director of the Red Cross volunteers at Shaw Air Force Base and became the first civilian to be awarded the Air Combat Command “Real Pro” Award from the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base.

Mrs. Kirk was actively involved in church work at St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter, teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school, confirmation classes and altar guild, and was a member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Myrtle Beach. Mrs. Kirk was an active member and president of the American Legion Auxiliary, an active member of the Palmetto Girl’s State selection committee. She was president of, and involved in the Cosmopolitan Club of Sumter. Mrs. Kirk was an executive secretary by profession both in the private sector and federal civil service.

Mrs. Kirk is survived by her husband of 58 years; three children, Linda Kirk (Larry) Parker of Summerton, Karen K. (Mark) Schultz of Charleston and Mark A. (Lorri) Kirk of Valparaiso, Ind.; her brothers, Carl Bundenthal of Frost Proof, Fla., and Dr. Theodore K. (Eva) Bundenthal of Stone Mountain, Ga.; her sisters, Jeanette (Robert) Heimburger of Cape Gerardo, Mo., and Ann (Cliff) Duncan of Branson, Mo.; four grandchildren, Maureen W. (Justin) Elam of Anchorage, Alaska, Ashleigh S. (Robert) Johnson of Sumter, Craig Schultz and Kyle Schultz of Charleston; two great-granddaughters, Whitney Michelle Elam and Hannah Parker Johnson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Heimburger.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to the Hollings Cancer Center, “Parker Miracle House Fund,” 86 Jonathan Lucas St., Charleston, S.C. 29425.

Sarah R. McElveen

Sarah Margaret Reynolds McElveen, 80, widow of Hubert Sydney McElveen, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born July 15, 1924, in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Benjamin Reynolds and the late Annie Christmas Reynolds. She was a seamstress and a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, where she was a nursery worker for 38 years, and recently attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Ann McElveen of Manning and Debbie M. (Ricky) Lee of Alcolu; a son, Frances Wayne McElveen of Manning; two sisters, Joretta Reynolds of Timmonsville and Marie (Claude) Gainey of Bethune; two grandchildren, David Richard Lee and Sarah Nicole Lee Marlowe.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Reynolds, Liston Reynolds and Carl Reynolds; and a sister, Thelma Reynolds Knight.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charles Brookshire officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Freewill Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to the Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, P.O. Drawer 40, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Fred Murray

Fred Murray, 87, widower of Marie Smith Murray and Beulah Grier Murray, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, in Manning, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Eastover, he was a son of the late Buck Murray and Maybell Pressley Murray. He received his formal education in the public schools of Mooresville, N.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked with the U.S. Postal Service while living in New York. After moving to Manning, he joined Temple Bethel Church and later moved his membership to the House of Faith Church, serving as a deacon and treasurer.

Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Waller of Maywood, Ill., Isabella Waller of Chicago, Ill., Evangelist Vera Ann Murray and Keisha Murray (Sylvester) of Sumter; one sister, Mamie Campbell of Mooresville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; foster children, Johnny Lester of Long Beach, N.Y., Roosevelt Odom Jr. (Anterinette) of Jacksonville, Fla., Pvt. Yolanda Calvin of Fort Jackson and LaTonya Calvin of Alcolu.

He was preceded in death by four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. James Lesene officiating, the Rev. Joe Blackwell presiding, assisting Rabbi Yosef Ben Rhodes and Evangelist Diane Lesene.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Joy L. Pigott

Joy Ellen Long Pigott, 40, wife of Stan Craig Pigott, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, in Summerton.

Born Oct. 22, 1964, in Great Lakes, Ill., she was a daughter of “Doc” Merlin Rauss and Barbara Degan Rauss. She was a supervisor at Goldkist, and a member of A.R.C. United Pentecostal Church in Manning.

Surviving besides her husband of Summerton, father of Nebraska and mother of New York, are two sons, Bryan Frith of Summerton and Tim Frith of West Monroe, La.; a daughter, Khyra Traham of Summerton; a brother, Kevin Long of Huntington Station, N.Y.; and two sisters, Sam Long and Carrie Long of Lake City, Colo.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 25, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. David W. Gleason officiating.

Memorials may be made to A.R.C. United Pentecostal Church, 7 Berkeley St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Vauda Gowdy Osborne

Mrs. Vauda Gowdy Osborne, age 69, died Monday, June 5, 2005 at a Manning hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Osborne was born in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late George William Gowdy and Roxie Floyd Gowdy. She was a retired inspector with the Skyline Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Osborne was a member of the New Hope Christian Church where she served as organist for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Ernest) Scurry of Turbeville, two sons, Randy (Patti) Osborne and Charles “Teddy” Osborne, all of Turbeville; one sister, Gracie Osborne of Lake City; a brother, John (Mildred) Gowdy of Sumter; and three grandchildren, Michael (Amanda) Scurry, Charley Scurry and Jason Osborne.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William C. Osborne; and two sisters, Anna Bell Gibbons and Vernice Morris.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 8 at New Hope Christian Church.

Burial followed in the Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Turbeville Free Will Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Joey Payne

TIMMONSVILLE – Jehugh Arvin “Joey” Payne Jr., 48, died Sunday at his home in Timmonsville.

Born Jan. 22, 1957, at Shaw Air Force Base, he was a son of Jehugh Arvin Payne Sr. and Esther Shaw Payne. He attended Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving are his father of Atlanta; his mother of New Zion; stepfather, Harry; four sisters, Jerrie Payne of Sumter, Teresa Roland of Tyler, Texas, Elizabeth Touchberry of Fla. and Robin Floyd of Manning; a brother, John LeRoy Payne of Alcolu; a stepbrother, Steve of Manning; and two stepsisters, Lynn and Sheri, both of Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 9, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle and the Rev. Robert Rivers officiating.

Burial followed in Spring Hill Cemetery near Rembert.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, 1780 Main St., Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

George E. Pearson

SANFORD, Fla. – George Ellison Pearson, 50, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at his residence in Sanford.

Born in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, July 9, 1954, he was a son of Georgia Pearson Donwoody and the late Lake Pearson. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include his mother, Georgia Donwoody of Sanford; three brothers, Fred (Loretta) Brooks, Willie (Rose) Thames and Rodney (Gwen) Donwoody, all of Sanford; two sisters, Gervine (Patrick) Johnson and Rosolyn Donwoody, all of Sanford.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Laurel Hill AME Church, Davis Station, with the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating.

Burial was in the Carolina Johnson Cemetery, Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Edna C. Rudd

Edna Cubbage Rudd, 69, widow of Marion Rudd, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Ida Cubbage.

Surviving are a son, Robert Wayne Rudd of Texas; two daughters, Deborah E. Floyd and Jackie R. Dennis, both of Sumter; a sister, Minnie Lee Bradham; a brother, Abbie Cubbage; 12 grandchildren, Becky, Tosha, Christy, David, Thomas, Paul, Wanda, Robert, Sarah, Rebecca, Little Robert and Lynn; 16 great-grandchildren, Jada, Katie, Anthony, Austin, Little David, Trenton, William, Eric, Robert Lee, Ashley, Zackary, Beth Anna, Amanda, Joseph, Terry and Tiffany.

She was preceded in death by a son, Marion Charles Rudd; three brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins and the Rev. Buddy Griffith officiating.

Burial was in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Blanche N. Sims

Blanche Olivia Newell Sims, 86, widow of Joseph Sims Sr., died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Lake Moultrie Nursing Facility in St. Stephens.

Born Sept. 18, 1918, in the Iva section of Abbeville County, she was the daughter of the late Will Newell and Mary Cowan Newell.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Abbeville County, attending Springfield School. She became a member of the family church at an early age.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph (Lou A.R.) Sims Jr. of Manning, Ronald Sims of Queens, N.Y. and Dennis Sims of Scranton, Pa.; a daughter, Mardell Cunningham of Woodbridge, N.J.; seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Michael Sims and 19 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning.

The Rev. Richard Addison, pastor of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville officiated.

Samuels Funeral Home, LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
