Thomas E. Andersen

MURRELLS INLET — Thomas Evans Andersen, 48, of Murrells Inlet, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 11, 1953, in Columbus, Ga., a son of Joe Andersen and the late Nell Evans Andersen.

He devoted his life to firefighting. He was the assistant chief of Surfside Beach Fire Department, where he was a member for more than 22 years. He served as an adjunct South Carolina Fire Academy instructor. He was instrumental in the creation of a local hazardous materials response team and served on that team as a Hazmat technician. He was a member of the Horry-Georgetown Co. Fire Chiefs Association, a charter member of the Grand Strand Fire Inspectors Association and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He fished in the Arthur Smith king mackerel tournaments.

Survivors, in addition to his father of Wilson, N.C., include a brother, David Andersen of Atlanta; two sisters, Nora Holder of Charlotte, N.C., and Sandy Bettinger of Sumter; two nephews and a niece.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Surfside United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Inabinet will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial, S.C. State Associations of Fire Chiefs, P.O. Box 2698, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

Elsie S. Carter

MULLINS — Elsie Smith Carter, 96, widow of Dr. J. S. Carter, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at National Health Care Center in Columbia after an illness.

She was born in Mullins, a daughter of the late Keen Dace and Lula Galloway Smith.

She attended Lander College and was a longtime owner of Carter's Drug Store in Mullins. For many years, she was an active member of Macedonia United Methodist Church in Mullins.

The family gratefully acknowledges the compassion and care provided by the staff of National Health Care Center on Parklane Road in Columbia.

Survivors include a daughter, Rae Maria Floyd of Columbia; two sons, J. S. "Smitty" Carter Jr. of Mullins and Bobby Peeples Carter of Atlanta; a sister, Josephine Rutland of Columbia; a niece, Dinah Rutland of Columbia; six grandchildren, E. Terry Floyd, John S. Carter III, Phoebe Carter and Rianne Thomas, all of Columbia, Brandon Carter of Charlotte, N.C., and Georgia Carter of Atlanta; three great-grandchildren, William Floyd of Charlotte and Jessica Carter and Weston Thomas, both of Columbia.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today at Cedardale Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Frey will officiate.

Memorials may be made to any charity.

Cox-Collins Funeral Home is in charge.

Lillian Craig

MYRTLE BEACH — Lillian Mae Pool Craig, 90, of Plantation Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002.

She was born May 21, 1911, a daughter of the late Elmer and Josie Pool of Greensburg, Ind.

She attended Greensburg public schools. She married Garnett M. Craig on May 30, 1933, in Hartford City, Ind., who preceded her in death. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of First Christian Church in Crown Point, Ind. From 1958 to 1982, she was co-owner, with her husband, Garnett, and son, Larry, of Craig's Clothing for Men on the Square in Crown Point.

Survivors include a son, Larry Craig and his wife, Carolyn, of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Marlene Betsy Craig of Hollywood, Calif.; Adam Craig of Myrtle Beach; Meredith Schuckford and her husband, Tim, of Crown Point; two great-grandchildren of Myrtle Beach; and her longterm care giver, Sophie Sanzaro.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Pruzin and Little Funeral Home in Crown Point.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. John Starr will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Eastern Star No. 408 and First Christian Church in Crown Point.

Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge.

Susan A. Dillon

EFFINGHAM — Susan Alford Dillon, 56, of 3615 Ward Road, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at home after an illness.

She was born Aug. 18, 1945.

She was formerly employed by Harwell Law Firm and with the Florence County Treasurer's Office.

Survivors include her husband, Lacy Henry Dillon; her father, Hopkin Alford of Wilmington, N.C.; her stepmother, Martha Alford of Wilmington; a son, William "Billy" Dillon and his wife, Jennifer, of Effingham; a daughter, Tracy Sealey and her husband, Paul, of Florence; a stepsister, Martha Marie Davis of Hilton Head; two sisters, Gloria Floyd of Florence and Melissa "Lissa" McFarlin and her husband, Bob, of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Caroline Sealey and Dillon Sealey, both of Florence, and Matthew Dillon of Effingham.

Visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home in Florence.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Florence.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Elsie F. Dowling

MYRTLE BEACH — Elsie F. Dowling, 84, of North Ocean Boulevard, died Jan. 21, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Louis and Rose Pincus Futterman.

She was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and a member of Temple Emanu-El.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Leatrice Futterman of Florida; and two nieces, Shelly and Allison Futterman, both of Florida.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Temple Emanu-El. Rabbi Mitchell Kornspan will officiate. Burial will be in Southeastern Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to Temple Emanu-El, 406 65th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge.

John E. Eisinger

PAWLEYS ISLAND — John E. Eisinger, 74, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Medical University of South Carolina.

A memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Precious Blood of Christ Church in Pawleys Island.
