COLUMBIA — A Homegoing Service for Margaret Alice Goodwin will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial in Palmetto Cemetery. Born in Orangeburg to Abraham and Beatrice G. Williams, she died December 17, 2004. Surviving are her children, Dorothy Pringle, Bonnie Walker, Jerry, Steve and Margaret Goodwin; brother, James Butler; devoted friend, Albert Gipson.

John Harris Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services with burial for John Arthur Harris Jr., 57, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blackjack Baptist Church. Visitation and viewing are 1-9 p.m. at Glover’s Memorial Chapel. Born to John and Nancy Harris, he died Dec. 18, 2004. Surviving: wife, Virginia Harris; children, Roderick, Curtis, Geraldine Harris; siblings, Jimmie Ruff, Joseph Harris Sr., Mary Best, Francenia Pearson; grandchildren; others.

Clyde Griswold

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Clyde Laverne Griswold, 72, of Camden will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Malvern Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Revs. Greg Allen, Warren Weeks and Buster Morris will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 21, 2004, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Hospice, 2001 W. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC, or charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Griswold died Sunday, December 19, 2004, after a long illness. Born in Jersey Shore, PA, he was the son of the late Harry and Mary Hatfield Griswold. He was a member of Malvern Hill Baptist Church serving as a deacon, director of Sunday School, sang in the choir and lead RA boys and House and Ground Committee. He was a volunteer fireman for over 25 years earning the rank of Captain with Shepard Fire Dept. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer, bowler and played softball for the Flying Nine at Shaw field, D-Shift for DuPont, his church team, a mason and American Legion. Mr. Griswold had retired from DuPont after 38 years. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Frances Polson Griswold; daughter, Angie Williams and her husband Ronnie Williams of Camden; son, Milton Loman Griswold and his wife Kim Halstead Griswold of Clarksville, GA; 7 grandchildren, W. Ronald Williams, III; twins, Reyna and Ryan Williams, twins, Sarah and Stephens Williams, twins, Norah and Virginia Griswold; sisters, Dorothy G. Raemer and Helen G. Keck of Wellshore, PA, Barbara G. Gallagher of Jersey Shore, PA; brothers, Herbert Griswold of Camden, SC, Donald Griswold of Trout Run, PA, and Daniel (Dean) Griswold of Albuquerque, NM, Wayne Griswold of Wilmington, DE, Harry (Buck) Griswold of Spring Hill, FL; 42 nieces and nephews, 15 brothers and sisters-in-law. Preceded in death by 2 infant sisters.

Margaret Hendrix

KERSHAW — Mrs. Margaret Catoe Hendrix, 87, of 304 West Welsh Street, Kershaw, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2004, in the White Oak Manor in Lancaster. She was born March 28, 1917, in Rock Hill, a daughter of the late Ed and Mollie Parrish Catoe. Mrs. Hendrix was the widow of the late J.E. Hendrix, to whom she was married for fifty-one years. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She had been superintendent of the Youth Education Department and Acteen Leader, and retired from Springs Industries after forty-six years and four months of service.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. from the Second Baptist by the Rev. Hugh McKinney and the Rev. Dr. Charles Rabon. Burial will be in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mrs. Hendrix is survived by a son, Baron M. Hendrix and his wife Genny of Kershaw; two brothers, Willis C. Catoe of Kershaw and Archie “Bubba” Catoe and his wife Annie of Florence; a sister, Sue Faulkenberry and her husband Manley of Kershaw; three grandchildren, Nelson Hendrix and his wife Sandy of Lexington, Bridget McCowan and her husband Tony of Kershaw and Russell Hendrix of Kershaw; six great grandchildren, Haven Hendrix, Harliann Hendrix, Harmony Hendrix of Lexington, Taylor Grace McCowan, Tad McCowan and Caroline Margaret McCowan of Kershaw; and a number of nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Beckham Catoe and Wade Catoe.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Second Baptist Church, 7737 Kershaw-Camden Highway, Kershaw, SC 29067.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home, 304 West Welsh Street, Kershaw.

Louise Peek

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Mrs. Louise Jennings Peek, 80, of Columbia, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, with Rev. Roy Arnold officiating. A private burial will proceed in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29206, or to Riverbanks Zoo, 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Peek died Sunday in Palmetto Baptist Medical Center. Born on June 20, 1924, in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Paul Jennings and Gladys Russell Jennings, and was the widow of Ivan Peek. She had been lifelong resident of Columbia and had worked as an Administrative Assistant with the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Peek volunteered at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center, The Town Theatre, and Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, where she was a member.

Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Jack Wallace of Cary, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Cindy Peek of Columbia; two sisters, Sara Evans and Polly Jennings, both of Columbia; two grandsons, Russell Peek and wife, Caroline and Andrew Peek.

Freddie Miller Jr.

COLUMBIA — Freddie E. Miller, Jr., 73, of Columbia, died Sunday, December 19, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church in Neeses with Rev. Henry Chavis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Mr. Miller was born in Neeses, a son of the late Freddie E. and Annie Bryan Miller. He was a member of Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had been an automobile salesman since 1951, first working for Horne Motors, then retiring from Superior Motors, both located in Orangeburg. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and was a Master Sales Counselor and Buick Master Sales Counselor.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law: Carolyn Denise and Philip Brice of Columbia, Robin Sue and Richard Spires of St. Matthews, Freddy Michelle Miller of Columbia; a sister, Jewel M. Chavis of Neeses; a brother, James E. Miller of Neeses; and six grandchildren: Deanna, Kristen, Kelly Anne, Walker, Brantley and Phillip Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mrs. Jewel Chavis, 2641 Ninety Six Road, Neeses.

Wilson Shaw

CHESTERFIELD — Mr. Wilson Monroe “Speedy” Shaw, age 71, died December 19, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, December 21, 2004, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Shaw was born in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Oscar Samuel and Alma Lewis Shaw. He was a retired employee of Delta Mills. Speedy was married to the late Faye Brown Shaw and was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, James and Murdock Shaw.

Survivors: 2 sons: Marty Shaw and Scott Shaw of Chesterfield, SC; 2 stepdaughters: Vickie Shaw and Anita Spencer of Chesterfield, SC, and Johnnie Sue Gaskins of Patrick, SC; 3 brothers: J.W. Shaw of Myrtle Beach, SC, Billy Shaw of Chesterfield, SC, and Johnny Shaw of Ruby, SC; 1 sister: Ruby S. Winburn of Cassatt, SC; Also 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home is serving the Shaw family.

Clyde Stroman

COLUMBIA — Services with burial for Clyde T. Stroman, 94, homemaker, widow of Melton Stroman, are 2 p.m. (1 p.m. viewing) Thursday at Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at Fulmer’s Funeral Home. Born in Barnwell Co. to Mrs. Henson Tyler, she died Dec. 19, 2004. Surviving: children, Richard and Edward Stroman, Lizzie Ware; grandchildren; others.

Ruth Cross

BOILING SPRINGS — Ruth A. Cross, 91, of 424 Thorn Meadow Lane, died Thursday, December 23, 2004. Born September 6, 1913, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Drew H. and Gertrude McWhorter Attaway. She was first married to the late W. K. Cross, Jr. and then to the late Herbert Cross. She was a retired teacher with Berkeley County Schools with 29 ½ years of service. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Covenant of Spartanburg where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Ruth Cross Circle (named in her honor). Mrs. Cross was a much beloved teacher of both the Latin language and English literature. She enjoyed a reputation for her often humorous storytelling and her insightful teaching of the Bible. An avid Scrabble player, she delighted in introducing others to the joys of the game.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Cross Barrett of Boiling Springs; four sons, the Rev. W. K. Cross, III of York, Andrew H. Cross of Cayce, H. Capers Cross of Mt. Pleasant, and E. Kenneth Cross of Spokane, WA; thirteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 27, 2004, at the United Methodist Church of the Covenant, Spartanburg, SC, conducted by the Rev. Cindy Swofford, the Rev. Elise Barrett, and the Rev. Chris Barrett. The family will receive friends after the service at the Church. Funeral services will also be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at Friendship United Methodist Church in Cross, SC, conducted by the Rev. William K. Cross, the Rev. Elise Barrett, and the Rev. Carroll Cash. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 189, Cross, SC 29436.

Blanche Caughman

LEXINGTON — Services for Blanche Kistler Caughman will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1430 N. Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072 or Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding St., Columbia, SC 29201. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Joseph Allen

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Joseph Barnwell Allen, 78, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Intrepid Fallen Hero Fund, One Intrepid Square, W. 46th Street and 12th Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10036; or TAPS, National Headquarters, 1621 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 300, Washington , DC 20009; or a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Allen died Saturday, December 25, 2004. Born in Lake City, he was a son of the late Otto and Florrie Williamson Allen. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He was founder of Columbia Detective Agency.

Surviving are his wife, Diane Holm Allen; sons, Joseph Allen, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Florence, Frankie Allen and his wife, Kim, of Scranton, Steven Allen and his wife, Tanya, of Columbia, and John Allen of Columbia; sister, Myrtle Gaskins of Florence; brother, Algie Allen of Lake City; and grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Jason, Alexis and Logan. He was predeceased by sisters and brother, Kizzie Floyd, Lucille Sauls, Valerie DuRant and Pete Allen.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of Palmetto Health Hospice for their loving care.
