Douglas Montgomery

COLUMBIA — Services for Douglas Clayton Montgomery, Jr., 87, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lanham Sunday School Class and members of Columbia Civitan Club. Memorials may be made to “Meals On Wheels,” 2817 Millwood Ave., Columbia, SC 29205 or to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29204. Visitation will be Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Montgomery died Monday, December 27, 2004. Born in East Arlington, Vermont, on April 13, 1917, he was the son of the late Douglas C. Montgomery, Sr. and Winifred Grout Montgomery. A 1939 graduate of The University of Illinois, he worked for E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. where he helped to develop the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945. Later he worked at General Electric producing an atomic reactor that powered the submarine “Seawolf.” In 1956 he moved to Columbia and became a personnel consultant with Douglas Montgomery Consultants and Sloan, Montgomery, Gregory and Hall where he worked until his retirement in 1992.

Mr. Montgomery was active at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church since 1956, serving as a deacon and chairman of Personnel and Finance Committees. He was also active with the Five Points Civitan Club serving as President, District Lt. Governor, and District Fruit Cake Chairman. In later years, he served as the treasurer of the Ivory Club of the Richland County Republican Party, and as a volunteer with Palmetto Health Baptist Medical Center and Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-eight years, Frances Hall Montgomery; daughters and sons-in-law, Edie Montgomery Barrett and Bill of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Mary Montgomery Elliott and Scott of Columbia; grandchildren: Matthew Montgomery Barrett and Katharine Alyssa Barrett of Winston-Salem, N.C.; John Douglas Elliott, Frances Anne Elliott and William Price Elliott of Columbia; sister and brother-in-law, Dorcas and John Noe of Charleston; brothers-in-law, Reece Hall and his wife, Kay, of Columbia and James Hall and his wife, Jane, of Mobile, Ala.

Lorenzo Paige

DILLON — Services for Lorenzo Paige will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. House of Thomas Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Dillon to Lee and Evelene Paige, he died December 22, 2004. Surviving are mother; siblings, Lee Jr., Ollie Paige, Dora McDuffie; children, Lorenzo, Marcus McGirt, Travis Paige.

Thomas Pruitt

WARRENVILLE — Services for Thomas Grady Pruitt, 75, U.S. Army veteran, are 2 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Napier Funeral Home, Graniteville; burial in Graniteville Cemetery. Born in Trenton to Frank and Eva Rankin Pruitt, he died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving are daughters, Marie Williams, Vonnie Pruitt; sister, Bertha Hadden; grandchildren, Joshua, T.J. Farrer, Alisa Vertucci; great-grand, Ivan Vertucci.

Beatrice Rye

EASTOVER — Beatrice Elizabeth Norwood Rye, age 85, widow of Thomas R. Rye, entered into God’s loving arms on December 27, 2004, in the Providence Hospital.

Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late Claude Marion and Charlotte Elizabeth Norwood. Mrs. Rye was the owner of Rye’s Nursery and developer of many varieties of Camellias and Azaleas. Her plants now grow in almost every state.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Beatrice and Richard Anthony Tedder and son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Grover and Margaret D. Rye of Columbia; 5 grandchildren, Richard Norwood Tedder and wife Laura Durgin Tedder of Chapin, Catherine Elizabeth Tedder Hahne and husband Erich K. Hahne of Charlotte, N.C., Anthony Christopher Tedder and wife Suzanne Jones Tedder of Columbia, Thomas Grover Rye II of Eastover and Lisa Ann Rye Sloan and husband J. Kell Sloan of West Columbia; 8 great-grandchildren, Richard Sawyer Tedder, Hallie Elizabeth Tedder, Reagan Lane Tedder, Charlotte Elizabeth Hahne, Savannah Grace Hahne, Jacob Kell Sloan, Margaret Jane Sloan and Koll Hollen Sloan; 2 sisters, Grace Catherine Lee and Gladys Roberta Lee of Columbia; 2 brothers, Flint Autrey Norwood and sister-in-law, Lib L. Norwood of Statesville, N.C. and Grover Melton Norwood and sister-in-law, Evelyn Norwood of Biloxi, Mississippi; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday, December 29, at 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, and laid to rest next to her beloved husband at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 12-1 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

The family would like to extend special recognition to the doctors, nurses, aides, and to all of those who cared for Mrs. Rye in her last days. “God bless each of you for your compassion and love.”

Pallbearers will be Willard Rye, James Rye, George Rye, Wayne Rye, Mike Rye, and Philip Lee.

Essie Saleeby

DILLON — A graveside service for Essie Moody Saleeby, 89, widow of Saleem Saleeby Sr., is 2 p.m. today in Greenlawn Cemetery. Cooper Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Marion Co. to Cicero Moody and Mary Moody Price, she died Dec. 26, 2004. She attended Dillon First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are children, Barbara Maples, Charles Saleeby; sister, Jessie Johnson; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Satcher

WARD — A graveside service for Margaret Penn Satcher will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Saluda Memorial Gardens, Richland Springs Area. Mrs. Satcher died Monday, December 27, 2004. Bland Funeral Home, Johnston, is in charge.

Irene Scott

HARTSVILLE — Services for Irene Thomas Scott, widow of Lawrence Scott, are 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Temple Church, Allentown, Pa. Viewing and visitation are Thursday at Bachman, Kulik and Reinsmith Funeral Home, Allentown. Hines Funeral Home is in charge. She died Dec. 24, 2004. Surviving are siblings, Grover Johnson, Harriet Hough, Barbara Mayshack, Angeline Williams, Eddie, Billy, Charles Thomas.

Gladys Scott

DARLINGTON — Services for Gladys Earnestine Scott 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle Worship Center; burial in Faith Memorial Gardens. Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Richmond, Va., to Johnny and Gladys Brown Scott, she died Dec. 23, 2004. Surviving: children, Elliott, Andrew, Joseph, Horace, Larry, Randolph, JoAnn Scott, Josephine Bacote, Julia Mouzon, Lola Agbo, Eileen Bonaparte.

Ernest Smith

IRMO — Services for Pastor Ernest Smith will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday (viewing at 10 a.m.) at the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Wake services will be held 6 p.m. this evening at the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Pastor Smith is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Joyce Jordan Smith; his beloved daughter, Kimberly Joyce; his beloved son Ernest Carlton; his brother, Roy Lee Smith; sister, Judy Cunningham; a spiritual son, Luther Holmes, Jr.

Memorial may be made to the Ecclesia Church of God In Christ, Post Office Box 11506, Columbia, South Carolina 29211.

A.B. Simmons

NORTH — Services with burial for A.B. Simmons, 90, widower of Ellen Simmons, are noon Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Woodford; visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home. Born to Lewis and Ollie Simmons, he died Dec. 22, 2004. Surviving are children, Rosa Charley, Junell Villegas, John Holman; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives.

Paul Smith

UNION — A graveside service for Paul Henry Smith, 76, widower of Rachel Smith, will be held at 11 a.m. today in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Union to Henry and Pauline Bailey Smith, he died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving are children, Linda Parks, Brenda Gallo, Hayward Smith; brothers, Elliott, Jimmy Smith; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Marian Terry

HAMPTON — Mrs. Marian Crapse Terry, 88, of Estill died Sunday morning in the Harper Nursing Center in Estill.

Born Dec. 11, 1916, in Hampton County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Paul Jefferson Crapse and Mae Bassett Crapse. She was a retired seamstress with the Estill Mfg. Plant and was a member of Sandy Drain Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by 2 sons: Paul D. Terry of Greenville and Donald Terry of Columbia; 1 brother: Duke Crapse and wife Dot of Sumter; 1 sister: Annie Mae Zorn of Estill; 2 grandchildren: Teresa F. Terry of Havlock, NC and Lauren Terry of Raleigh, NC. There are a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Lennie Brisendine and Rev. Paul DeLoach. Burial will follow in the Sandy Drain Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery

Friends may call at the funeral home in Hampton on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. and until the hour of services on Wednesday.

William Smith

ALLENDALE — William Nelson “Billy” Smith, 64, entered into rest Saturday, December 25, 2004, in Allendale County Hospital.

Mr. Smith was a native of Allendale County, the son of the late Ewing and Margaret Meyer Smith. He had retired from Mixson Oil Company after 31 years. He was the owner of Twins Taxidermy and a member of Allendale First Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving are 2 daughters: Denise S. Broome and husband John of Jackson and Genise S. Rabon and husband Chris of Irmo; 4 grandchildren: Kelcey Brower, Brooke and Travis Broome, William Christian Rabon; 1 brother: Marshall P. “Sonny” Smith Sr. of Allendale; 3 sisters: Nickie S. Clifton and Mary Frances Smith, both of Allendale and Pattie S. Johnson of Ruffin. There are many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and 1 great great niece.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Allendale First Baptist Church with burial following in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Hospice. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.
