She was a native of Marion, N.C. She was a 1966 graduate of Marion High School and a 1970 graduate of Converse College with a bachelor's degree in English. She received a master's degree in English from the University of South Carolina in 1972. She taught English in North Carolina and in Maryland. She was also organist for St. John's Church in Marion and more recently at St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park, Md., where she was a long-time member.

For several years, she was head of the commission of the Angelican Haitian Partnership for St. Martin's acting as liaison between the parish and La Resurrection, St. Martin's sister church in Gros Morne, Haiti. She visited Haiti on three occasions and was inspired by the faith and hope of the people of Gros Morne, one of hundreds of Haitian villages ravaged by poverty, illiteracy and sickness. She shared that inspiration with the congregation of St. Martin's, encouraging members to visit and provide assistance to La Resurrection and to the renovation of three schools in Gros Morne. Her life was directed by the love of her children. She developed the youth group, created music for their celebrations and worked with Haiti to leave the world a better place for them.
