Mary Hershberger

MYRTLE BEACH -- Mary Lou Flowers Hershberger, 73, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Conway Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Conway, the youngest daughter of the five daughters and three sons of the late Henry Ellie and Bessie Cook Flowers. "Lukie," as she was known to her family, always was fond of saying that she was a Great Depression-era baby, but was wealthy in family and friends. After growing up in rural Horry County, she graduated from high school in Charleston, where she lived with her eldest sister, Nathalie, and her family. Her marriage to the late Albert Tharp Hucks produced her children Michale and Suzanne and allowed her to travel the world, but she always maintained her roots in South Carolina. She attended Wilmington College and earned her master's degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.

She and Albert divorced and she married Frank Jackson and produced her children Frank, Elizabeth and Paul. She taught high school in Miami and middle and elementary school at Homewood in Conway and Forestbrook in Myrtle Beach until a stroke forced her to retire in 1990.

After a lengthy convalescence in Florence and with her daughters in Houston and her sisters in Myrtle Beach, she again was able to live independently at her home in Myrtle Beach. She was a lifelong Christian, having joined Salem Baptist Church at a young age and never moving her membership. She lived her faith courageously and thankfully on a daily basis and was an inspiration to her family and friends. She went to join her Savior as she had lived, with courage, hope, love and thankfulness, surrounded and uplifted by her loving family and friends.

Survivors include her five children, Michael Walter Hucks of Matthews, N.C., Mary Suzanne Stockment of Houston, Leroy Frank Jackson III of Clovis, Calif., Elizabeth Reese Bustamante of Houston and Vincent Paul Jackson of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Nathalie Edge of North Myrtle Beach, Ester Bates of Kingstree and Hallie Titmus of Myrtle Beach; and brothers David Flowers of Aynor and Maxie Flowers of Houston.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elma Craig Premont; and a brother, Francis Marion Flowers.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Galivants Ferry Baptist Church. The Rev. Hobert Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
