Margaret E. 'Maggie' Cox

MYRTLE BEACH -- Margaret E. "Maggie" Cox, 49, of Folly Estate, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel.

Angela S. DeLorme

CHARLESTON -- Angela Salinardi DeLorme, 78, widow of Cecil Crosland "Son" DeLorme Jr., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at a local hospital.

She was born July 24, 1924, in Hoboken, N.J., a daughter of the late Phillip Salinardi Sr. and Mary Parlotti Salinardi.

She was a graduate of Hoboken High School and attended Katharine Gibbs Business School in Hoboken.

Survivors include two sons, Charles C. DeLorme of Lebanon, Ill., and Richard P. DeLorme of Surfside Beach; two daughters, Mary D. Meloy of Boca Raton, Fla., and Marie D. "Scooter" Barnette of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Michelle "Micki" Bryant, Richard DeLorme Jr., John P. DeLorme, Mary Sue DeLorme, Ryan P. Meloy, Sean M. Meloy, Scott DeLorme and Cory Meloy; a great-grandson, Crosland Davis Bryant; a sister, Marie S. Cahill of Hoboken; and two brothers, Phillip Salinardi Jr. of Hoboken and Richard L. Salinardi of St. Louis.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph N. Salinardi.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Episcopal Church. Inurnment will be private.

Leroy M. 'Max' Garrell

LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. -- Leroy Maxwell "Max" Garrell, 74, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington, N.C.

Arrangements will be announced by Inman Funeral Home.

G. Heyward Goldfinch Sr.

CONWAY -- G. Heyward Goldfinch Sr., 84, of Beaty Street, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Conway Medical Center after an illness.

He was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Conway, a son of the late W.M. and Ruth Rheuark Goldfinch.

He was a graduate of Conway High School and attended Wofford College for 3 years. He graduated from Gupton Jones college of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn., in 1940, with a degree in mortuary science and embalming. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and served in the Army during World War II in the Panama Canal Zone. After discharge from the Army he joined his father in 1945 at Goldfinch Funeral Home. After his father's retirement, he and his brother co-owned and operated the business until 1995 when they sold to their sons. He was also co-owner of Hillcrest Cemetery of Conway. Prior to his death, he was the oldest past president of the S.C. Funeral Directors Association, a past president of the Pee Dee Funeral Directors Association, a member of Selected Independent Funeral Directors and National Funeral Directors Association. He had been on the board of directors of Conway National Bank since 1976.

His faith was a very important part of his life and he was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, the Hut Bible Class and United Methodist Men for Christ. He was a past chairman of the administrative board, past finance chairman, Committee on Nominations and Personnel, etc.

Until his death, he was the only living Charter member of the Conway Kiwanis Club, in which he had been an active member for more than 50 years. He served the Kiwanis in many ways, including being a past president and the chairman of the annual pancake supper and breakfast for many years, to which he sold thousands of tickets annually. The Conway Kiwanis Club honored him with the naming of the G. Heyward Goldfinch Kiwanis Foundation, Kiwanian of the year in 1964. In 1995, he received his 50-year membership plaque, and he was named George F. Hixson Fellow by Kiwanis International in 1996.

In the 1940s and '50s, he was an active member and past president of the Conway Jaycees and recipient of the first Jaycee of the Year Award in 1952. He was instrumental in forming the Conway Chamber of Commerce, and served as President in 1960-61. Recently, he served as honorary chairman of the Building Committee for the new chamber building and was honored with the naming of the G. Heyward Goldfinch Sr. Board Room.

He was a member of Conway Lodge No. 65 AFM since 1945, a member of Omar Temple of the Shrine, past president of the M-L-C Shrine Club, a member of the Waccamaw Shrine Club, and a member of the Peddlers Shrine Unit. For many years, he was chairman of the Shriners' annual fish fry and sold thousands of tickets to raise funds to help crippled and burned children. He helped many children from Horry County get into the Shriners Hospitals for help they could not otherwise afford. Also, he was a member of Horry Post No. 111 American Legion, Conway Post Veterans of Foreign Wars and Live Oak Camp No.124 Woodmen of the World.

Some of the many awards he received include: Outstanding Civic Leader of America, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Legion Horry Post 111 (twice), The Field and Herald (now The Sun News) Rod and Harold McCowan Service Award in 75-76, Horry County Family of the Year 1980, Life Membership Kiwanis International in 1978, Boss of the Year from the Conway Chapter of Professional Secretaries International in 1984, the Laverne H. Creel Lifetime Achievement Award from the Conway Chamber in 1993, and the American Legion Fifty-Year Membership Award in 1998. In 1998, then-Gov. David Beasley awarded him the Order of the Palmetto. Rep. Billy Witherspoon presented the award to him at the celebration of his 80th Birthday in January 1999.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margaret Brunson Goldfinch; a son, George H. Goldfinch Jr. and his wife, Susie; two daughters, Cynthia Goldfinch Turner of Conway and Merilyn Goldfinch Cain and her husband, Sam, of Clover; five grandsons, William Turner, David Turner, Bryan Cain, Jonathan Cain, and Heyes Goldfinch; a granddaughter, Meghan Goldfinch; two great-granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachel Turner; and a brother, W.M. "Mac" Goldfinch Jr. of Garden City Beach.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Conway. The Rev. Tom Brittain and the Rev. Carl Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Winifred A. Gottko

MYRTLE BEACH -- Winifred A. Gottko, 88, of Covenant Towers and formerly of Orchard Drive in Corning, N.Y., died Monday, June 2, 2003.

She was born June 3, 1914, in Queens, N.Y., the only child of the late Phillip and Elsie Doberstien Albert.

She was the widow of John J. Gottko, who died in 1988.

She graduated from Katharine Gibbs Business School in New York City. She worked as a secretary on Wall Street, where she met her husband. After her marriage to Jack in 1936, she moved to Hollis, Long Island, N.Y. Later they moved to Elmira, N.Y., and settled in Corning, where she was a homemaker and reared their three children. She was active in Chapter A, a hospital volunteer organization, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was a member of Corning Country Club. After her children were grown, she worked as a combination tour guide-sales associate at The Corning Glass Center in the Steuben Shop.

She moved to Myrtle Beach, where she and her husband built a home in Briarcliffe Acres. There she was a member of The Dirt Diggers Garden Club. She and her husband traveled extensively.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane E. Marcozzi and her husband, Richard, of Myrtle Beach; two sons, Richard P. Gottko of Corning and Dr. John J. Gottko Jr. of Corvallis, Ore.; two grandsons, Thomas Gottko and his wife, Jennifer, of West Henrietta, N.Y., and Michael Gottko and his wife, Jackie, of Victor, N.Y.; and twin great-grandchildren, Colin and Emma.

A memorial service will be at a later date at Covenant Towers and a remembrance will be held at the home of Jane and Richard Marcozzi in Myrtle Beach.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach is in charge.

William Leavy Jacobs

GEORGETOWN -- William Leavy Jacobs, 83, a retired employee with the former Riverside Oil Co., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Graham Funeral Home.

Arrangements will be announced by the funeral home.

John J. Klein

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- John J. Klein, 69, of Pawleys Plantation, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Jamaica, N.Y., a son of the late Louis and Margaret MacKenzie Klein.

Before retiring to the area in 1998, he had a distinguished career as a sales and marketing executive in the chemical industry. He was a member of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church and a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Notre Dame fan.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Klein; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Klein of Brookfield, Wis.; two sons, Gregory Klein and his wife, Lisa, of Reston, Va., and Dr. Andrew John Klein and his fiancee, Dr. Christina Martinez, of San Francisco; three grandchildren, Jacob Connor Ricci of Brookfield and Matt and Mary Frances Klein, both of Reston; a brother, Robert Klein of Great Neck, N.Y.; and three sisters, Mary Lou, Ellen Murphy and Margaret Kerner of Basking Ridge, N.J.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church.
