Frank S. Smith Jr.

COLUMBIA -- Frank Summer Smith Jr., 79, died Thursday, June 5, 2003.

He was born in 1924 in Athens, Ga., a son of the late Frank Summer Smith and Florence Davis Smith.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired as a chief executive officer and vice-chairman of Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Co. He attended Davidson College and Furman University.

He was very involved in giving of his time to the community. Several examples are his leadership on Richland County Council over the years, leadership of the Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation, past president of the United Way of the Midlands and the Columbia and S.C. Chambers of Commerce. He was on the governing boards for Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Wildewood School, Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of America.

He was a recipient of many awards for his volunteer service, including Richland Memorial Hospital fellow; Columbia Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year, Commerce Ambassador of the Year; United Way Humanitarian of the Year and Association of the Army's Civilian of the Year.

He was former chairman of the Palmetto Club and the Pine Tree Hunt Club and was a member of Forest Lake Country Club.

He was a member and elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, an active teacher of Sunday school and a former moderator, Congaree Presbytery.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Martin Smith; children, Frank Smith III and his wife, Judy Smith, of Sterling, Va., Katharine Smith Moorer and her husband, Pinckney Moorer, Gary and Lou Schraibman; Michael and Aimee Schraibman and Catherine Schraibman of Columbia; grandchildren, Sumner Moorer, Carter Moorer Jr., Olivia Schraibman, George Schraibman, Caroline Schraibman Jr.; siblings, Mrs. Paul DeTreville, Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Dalrymple, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moorman and Mrs. Robert Moorman.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the adult reception hall of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. Robert Hepenstall III, the Rev. Dr. Eric Skidmore and the Rev. Dr. Ellen Skidmore will officiate.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Gilmer S. Turner, Gayle O. Averyt, W. Talley Elliott and William J. Keenan III.

Memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church or to any charity.

Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia is in charge.

Henry 'Brother' Bowens

CONWAY -- Henry "Brother" Bowens, 81, father of Katura Lynch and Tabitha Conwell, of Carver Street, Myrtle Beach, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Richland Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by McKiever Funeral Home Inc. of Conway.

H.A. Cauthen Jr.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Hazel Alexander Cauthen Jr., 78, of Pamela Street, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Lancaster, he was a son of the late Hazel Alexander and Jesse Barton Cauthen Sr.

He retired from B and A Sales in Gastonia and Studebakers in Myrtle Beach. He was a World War II Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart Award, European American Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Baptist Church in Gastonia. He was a graduate of Kings Business College.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty Sue Craig Cauthen; sons Victor Carroll Cauthen and his wife, Carol Smith Cauthen, of Atlanta, Steven Mark Cauthen of Sanford, N.C., and Donald Eugene Cauthen of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Harriet Sue Cauthen and her husband, Donald C. Hovis Sr., of Myrtle Beach; brother, Kenneth Charles Cauthen of Gastonia; sisters Helen Craig of Charlotte, N.C., and Carolyn Sanders of Rock Hill; and grandchildren Blake Alexander Cauthen, Ashey Caroline Cauthen, Steven Kane Cauthen, Donald C. Hovis Jr., Myers Costner Hovis, Saxton Tanner Cauthen, Markie Elizabeth Cauthen and Carlie Ann Cauthen.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at McLean Funeral Directors.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McLean Funeral Directors, Founders chapel. Dr. Leon Smith and Dr. A. Douglas Aldridge will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Blake Alexander Cauthen, Steven Kane Cauthen, Donald Calvin Hovis Jr., Myers Costner Hovis, Blair Craig and Saxton Tanner Cauthen.

Memorials may be made to any charity.

Joseph T. Creed Sr.

LITTLE RIVER -- Joseph Thomas Creed Sr., 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Seacoast Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Albany, N.Y., a son of the late John and Alida Domery Creed.

He moved to Little River 10 years ago after living in Albany for more than 60 years.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jolene Stampfli Creed, of Little River; a son, Joseph T. Creed Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Little River; a sister, Ruth Bowe of Albany; and a granddaughter, Shannon Creed of Little River.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1100 Eighth Ave. N., North Myrtle Beach. The Rev. George Moynihan will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Intracoastal Stroke Support Organization, P.O. Box 3296, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578.

Lee Funeral Home and Crematory in Little River/North Myrtle Beach is in charge.

Reba Cross

MYRTLE BEACH -- Reba Alyce Wright Cross, 71, formerly of High Point, N.C., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at home.

She was born May 2, 1931, in Guilford County, a daughter of David B. and Ruth Marshall Wright.

She was graduated from High Point College and had been a resident of High Point for 65 years until moving to Myrtle Beach in 1996. She taught for 35 years in the Guilford County school system at Millis Road School and Jamestown Middle School. She was a Baptist.

On Aug. 14 1954, she married George W. Cross, who died July 26, 1999.

Survivors include two sons, James "Jim" Cross and his wife, Malissa, of Miramar, Fla., and Joseph "Joe" Cross and his wife, Marsha, of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, David "Dave" Wright of Olin, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service in High Point.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.

Johnnie J. Dry

CONWAY -- Johnnie Jeanette Dry, 59, of S.C. 905, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

She was born in Conway, a daughter of the late John T. and Cardie Hewitt Johnson.

She was a member of Homewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Dillard and his wife, Wanda, and Michael Dillard, all of Conway; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Homewood Baptist Church. The Rev. Earl Spivey will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
