Dr. Cecil H. Beard

MURRELLS INLET -- Dr. Cecil Hartzog Beard, 84, of Old Kings Hwy died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Born May 23, 1919 in Bamberg County, S.C., he was the son of the late James Willie and Julia Fender Beard. Dr. Beard was a 1947 graduate of North Greenville College, 1949 graduate of Furman University,1954 graduate of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. and received the first honorary doctorate conferred by Charleston Southern University in 1970.

He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1945 by Colston Branch Baptist Church in Bamberg County and served the following churches: Joyce Branch Baptist Church and Seven Pines Baptist Church both in Barnwell County, New Liberty Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, Motlow Creek Baptist Church in Campobello, Olive Grove Baptist Church in Northside, N.C., First Baptist of Hemingway, Tigerville Baptist Church and First Baptist of Surfside Beach. He also was the interim pastor after retirement at Little River Baptist Church and Piney Forest Baptist Church in Andrews. Dr. Beard was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Surfside Beach, a life member of South Strand Lions Club, a 50 year Mason in Tyger Masonic Lodge #190 AFM, Tigerville and a member of Waccamaw Association Pastor's Conference. He served on the General Board of the S.C. Baptist Convention, Founding Board of Trustees of Charleston Southern University, Board of Trustees of Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood, moderator for Waccamaw, Williamsburg and Southeast Baptist Association and on the board of directors for South Strand Helping Hand.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Hudson Beard; sons and their wives, Austin and Susan Beard of Andrews, David and Deborah Beard of Spartanburg, and Johnny and Michelle Beard of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Wade Beard of Chicago, Ill., Jenny Beard of Columbia, Joshua Beard of Murrells Inlet, Hudson Beard of Spartanburg, and Ginny Luther of Macon, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday at Timberlake Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm., Thursday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Marie L. Frasier

GEORGETOWN -- Mrs. Marie L. Frasier, 84, of the Rosehill Community, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003. Arrangements will be announced by Wilds Funeral Home.

L. Howard Garnar

MYRTLE BEACH -- L. Howard Garnar, 94, died Tuesday Nov. 18, 2003, at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was born July 10, 1909, the son of the late George Lestor and Katherine Zabriskie Garnar. His wife, Katherine F. Garnar predeceased him in 1993.

Mr. Garnar graduated from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1930. His working career of 35 years was spent with Worthington Pump Company, in Harrison, N.J. After his retirement in 1965 he moved to Briarcliffe Acres where he has spent the last 38 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Dunes Golf and Beach Club where he was active in both.

Survivors include his daughter, Gail G. Jacobus of Morristown, N.J.; four grandchildren, Roland A. Jacobus of Minneapolis, Minn., Katherine Jacobus of San Francisco, Calif., Julie Clarkson of Spartanburg, S.C., and Sam Daly of Tracy, Calif.; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Friday Nov. 21, 2003, with Dr. Robert C. Wilkes officiating.

Bertie T. Gaskins

JOHNSONVILLE -- Mrs. Bertie Tanner Gaskins, 66, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Lake Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Harvey "Harv" P. Kopinski

MURRELLS INLET -- Harvey "Harv" Paul Kopinski, 74, of Captains Cove, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 19, 1929 in Brockport, N.Y., he was the son of the late James Paul and Nellie Kopinski. Mr. Kopinski retired from Eastman Kodak Company after 37 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Winifred Ann Mowers Kopinski; sons and wives, Paul and Janet Kopinski of Bonair, Ga., Michael and Trisha Kopinski of Warsaw, N.Y., and David and Lori Kopinski of Rochester, N.Y.; daughters, Mary Kopinski of Charlotte, and Jane and her husband Randy English of Newark, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be May 8, 2004 in Warsaw, N.Y. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Grace T. Larimore

MARION -- Grace Turner Larimore, 87, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Smith-Collins Funeral Home.

John J. Robichaux

SURFSIDE BEACH -- John Joseph Robichaux ,75, Thornwood Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

Born Feb. 10, 1928, in Lafayette, La, a son of the late Albert and Maggie Robichaux.

He retired after 22 years as a Chief in the U.S. Navy. After his military service he retired to Greensboro, N.C., and was employed with Gilbarco, Omark, and Limitorque. He graduated from Lafayette High School and attended Southwestern University (Ragin Cajuns). For the past ten years he made his home in Myrtle Beach and was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the VFW, the Elks Club, the Newcomers Club, and was an avid golfer.

His wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Robichaux; his daughters, Diana Foust and husband William, Sue Upchurch and husband Dale; his sister, Bonnie Peach; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren, survives him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home with a Christian Prayer Service at 6:00.

Marion H. Starr

CONWAY -- Marion H. Starr, 68, of Castlewood Dr. died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center following an illness.

Born May 28, 1935 in Hickory, N.C., a son of the late Nolan and Dollie McCrary Starr. He was a 1955 Graduate of Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn. Mr. Starr retired in 2000 after 46 years as an ordained minister in the Church of God. During his ministry he pastured churches in Pa., Ore., and S.C.

Survivors include his wife; Marlene Joyce Starr, five sons; Darrell Starr of Jackson Springs N.C., David Starr, Duane Starr, both of Conway, Dominic Starr, Denny Starr, both of Myrtle Beach; one brother; Bob Starr of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Pat Helms of Hickory, N.C., and Joann Maggio of Erie, Pa.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Community Church.

Rufus Vereen

CONWAY -- Rufus Vereen, 82, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Kindred Health Care, Charleston, S.C., following an illness.

Arrangements will be announced by Latimer's Funeral Home.
