Rosa Bell Lawson

CONWAY -- Rosa Bell Lawson, 75, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Conway Medical Center following an illness.

Surviving are her husband, Eddie Lawson; five sons, Edward Jr., James, Joseph, Henry, and Kenneth Lawson; two daughters, Ann Gardner and Linda McCray; two sisters, 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, from Cherry Hill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Latimer's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Linton

MYRTLE BEACH -- Mr. Robert Edwin Linton, 71, formerly of Frederick, Md., died on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Grand Strand Regional Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Sherwood Linton.

Born Jan. 24, 1932, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Stanley E. and Ruth E. Tucker Linton. Mr. Linton was educated in Frederick schools, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service in the military, Mr. Linton was employed with the Department of Defense working as a transportation officer.

Mr. Linton was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Frederick; and enjoyed traveling. He had traveled extensively, and was fond of Ireland, and was to hold dual citizenship in the coming months. He was also an avid golfer, and had recently been affiliated with Beltair Golf Course, in Myrtle Beach.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Crook, and husband, Ashbyof West Virginia; one son, Bruce Lee Linton of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Stacy Linton, Douglas Linton, Sean Crook, Desmond Crook, and Shannon Crook.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Marie Linton, in 1978.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9th, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10th. The Rev. Dr. Conrad O. Link, will officiate. Interment will be in Brook Hill Cemetery, Yellow Springs, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.

Shirley G. Lux

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Shirley G. Lux, 83, widow of Walter G. Lux, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Ormond Beach, Fla. Arrangements will be announced by McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

Lena C. Martin

LORIS -- Lena Cox Martin, 87, of Jackson Martin Road, in the Goretown Community of Horry County, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Loris Community Hospital following an illness.

Mrs. Martin was born Nov. 9, 1916 in Socastee, S.C., a daughter of the late Alextress Foster Cox and the late Eva Jennie Newton Cox. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Jackson R.

Martin; a brother, Charles Dickson Cox; and eight sisters, Edna Cox Smith, Ruby Cox Morton, Corrie Cox Prince, Elma Cox Stevens, Alma Cox, Maude Cox Williamson, Myrtie Cox Vaught, and Louise Cox Parsons.

Survivors include; three sons, Harold J. Martin of Little River, S.C., Dan R. Martin and his wife, Dianne and Harmon Martin and his wife, Jeneta, all of Loris, two daughters, Jackie Sellers and her husband, Grady of Conway and Edith A. Buffkin of Loris; and one sister, Nell Cox Prince of Loris, twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at Ward Funeral Home in Loris.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, from the Ward Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery, Loris. Ward Funeral Home of Loris is serving the family.

Dorothy 'Dot' R. Mooney

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Dorothy "Dot" Riggs Mooney, 81, died on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, peacefully in the company of her family under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.

The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County graduated from Register High School in 1939 and attended Warren-Chandler School of Nursing in Savannah. She was employed by the Bulloch County Hospital in the 1940s as a nurse. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mooney Jr. M.D.; and a sister, Joyce Riggs Collins. Mrs. Mooney was a charter member of the Pittman Park United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Mooney, one of the pioneers in the addiction treatment field in the United States, has devoted the last four decades to helping others with alcohol and drug dependency. In 1999, she was recognized along with Betty Ford in the book, "Women Pioneers in 12 Step Recovery", for her significant contributions in the treatment field as well alcoholics anonymous. After obtaining sobriety from their own chemical dependencies in the late 1950s, Mrs. Mooney and her husband, Dr. John, made and unwavering commitment to help others with similar addictions. The founded Willingway Hospital in 1971. In addition to Willingway Hospital, Mrs. Mooney established the Women's Residence, a halfway house for women, which has been in operation since the 1970s.

Dot Mooney's legacy in the alcohol and drug treatment field is unparalleled. Known for her candor and humility, she has touched thousands of lives as a tireless counselor devoted to healing families affected addiction. Since the 1960s, she has traveled extensively around the country spreading the word of experience, strength, and hope at Alcoholics Anonymous conventions and meetings.

In 1997, Mrs. Mooney was honored by the Georgia Addiction Counselors Association, as the recipient of the John Mooney Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her competency as a counselor, commitment as a teacher, courage as a leader, and love and compassion for patients and co-workers. Mrs. Mooney was also a recipient of the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award. She was a member of the Georgia Addiction Counselors Association and the National Association of Addiction Counselors.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Al and Jane Mooney of Cary, N.C., Jimmy and Robbin Mooney of Statesboro, Ga., and Dr. Bobby and Cindy Mooney of Statesboro, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol Lind and D. Robert Bryan of Statesboro, Ga.; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur James and Marilyn Riggs of Statesboro, Ga.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Delores Riggs Durden and Kenneth Durden of Vidalia, Ga. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, Rachel Mooney of Statesboro, Ga., John Mooney of Charlottesville, Va., Marlon Mooney, Warren Mooney, Robert Mooney, Yancey Mooney, Elliott Mooney, Eric Bryan, Ross Bryan, And Sara Bryan, all of Statesboro, Ga.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Pittman Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jenny Jackson-Adams, the Rev. Jerry Wallace, and the Rev. Mike Huling officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be the grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Collins, David Collins, Dewayne Collins, Linda Collins, Patricia McCubbins, John Collins, Van Collins, Brenda Collins, and their families.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Willingway Foundation, 311 Jones Mill Road, Statesboro, Ga. 30458, or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.

Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia G. Pharr

MYRTLE BEACH -- Virginia Green Pharr, 85, of the Aloha Motel, widow of Clarence C. Pharr, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

Mary E. Ragno

MYRTLE BEACH -- Mary Elizabeth Ragno, 66, of Island Green, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 10, 1937 in Tamacqua, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Masch Eltringham.

Surviving are her husband, Anthony Ragno; son, Robert Ragno of S.C.; daughters, Carol Ann Petruzzi of Ohio, Joanne Verile of N.J., and Laura Jean Oden of S.C.; grandchildren, Heather and Brian Petruzzi, Peter, Michael, Michelle, Elizabeth, Joseph Verile and Joshua, Marsha and Daniel Oden; sisters, Eileen Evans of Ind., Marcia Phillips of Mich., and Lahomma Wyant of Ind.; brothers, Charles Eltringham of Ind., Robert Eltringham of N.J., and Douglas Eltringham of Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with a prayer service at 7 p.m..

Memorials may be made to American Lung Association of S.C., 1817 Gadsen St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Howard B. Richardson

MYRTLE BEACH -- Howard Begg Richardson, 85, of Island Green, died Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Myrtle Beach Manor. Arrangements Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

M. Lucille Rippy

MYRTLE BEACH -- M. Lucille Rippy, 72, of Arundel Road at Plantation Pointe, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 08, 1931, in Bladenboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Grover Carson and Alma Hester Bryan. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Frankie Bryan.

Mrs. Rippy was a bookkeeper and vice-president of the Bergstrom Air Force Base Credit Union in Austin, Texas. She was also President of the N.C.O. Wives Club at Bergstrom AFB. After moving to Myrtle Beach, she was a bookkeeper for Central Base funds at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. She was a member and chairman of the Benevolence Committee at Central Baptist Church, and a member for 25 years at Myrtlewood Golf Club.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, James A. Rippy, a son, Thomas Ray Rippy and wife Caroline of Goose Creek, S.C.; two daughters, Barbara A. Adair and husband, Thomas of Socastee, SC, Donna S. Doxey and husband, Eddie of Conway, S.C.; five brothers, Hubert Bryan of Clarkton, N.C., James Albert Bryan of Dover, Del., Bennie Earl Bryan of Ocean Isle, N.C., G.C. Bryan of Bladenboro, N.C., Robert Bryan of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Evelyn Edwards of Bladenboro, N.C., Magdalene Bordeaux of Dublin, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Travis and Dawn Adair, Kyle and Cale Doxey, Shaun, Dave, and Mark Rippy; and a great grand-child, Raven Morse.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Central Baptist Church, 950-38th Ave N., Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.
