Henry L. Roberts Sr.

MURRELLS INLET -- Henry Lloyd Roberts Sr., 64, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Born March 10, 1939 in Conway, S.C., he was the son of the late Blonza M. and Myrtie Singleton Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed with Burroughs & Chapin Co. Mr. Roberts was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church and Socastee Masonic Lodge. He was an avid fisherman of Murrells Inlet and Santee. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by brother, Harry

M. Roberts and infant brother, Harold Eugene Roberts.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Loretta D. Roberts; son, Henry L. Roberts Jr. and wife, Renee of Georgetown; daughter, Lora Lee Roberts and finance, Darrin Smith of Murrells Inlet; two granddaughters, Hannah and Olivia Roberts of Georgetown; sisters, Amaryllis R. Shelley and husband , Carl, Miriam R. Little, Alice R. Edge and husband, Jerry and Linda R. Lundy and husband, Ray; sister-in-law, Marilyn D. Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m., Saturday at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Belin Memorial UMC Family Life Center, PO Box 528, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

Pauline P. Smith

ANDREWS -- Pauline Payne Smith, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree.

Mrs. Smith was born in Bessemer City, N.C. on Nov. 3, 1917, a daughter of the late David Lee Payne and Ethel Ida Phifer Payne. She grew up in Trio and graduated from Andrews High School. Mrs. Smith was the widow of Marion Asbury Smith. She was a member of Elim United Methodist Church and the

Elim United Methodist Women.

Surviving are: a son, Ronald L. Smith of Andrews; two daughters, Nan S. Blakely of Georgetown and Paulette S. Mincey of Hemingway; two sisters, Marie P. Lambert of Andrews and Edith P. Brantley of Beaufort; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by: two sons, Marion Asbury Smith, Jr. and Lancy Lee Smith; and a great-grandson, Daniel Jayroe "Jay" Newton.

Funeral services will be eleven o'clock Friday morning, Jan. 9, 2003, at Elim United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Julius Hadden. Burial will follow in the Churchyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.

Dorothy E. Vandewater

GARDEN CITY BEACH -- Dorothy Elizabeth Vandewater, 87, of Jensen's Village died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at her home.

Born March 21, 1916 in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late William and Mulvena Fernette Wickham. Mrs. Vandewater was a homemaker and active in Jensen's Activity Club. She was a member of Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the DOT Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 87 in Cranford, N.J. Mrs. Vandewater was preceded in death by her husbands, Alfred Seale and Walter Vandewater.

Surviving are sons, Alfred Seale of Florida, Robert Seale of Texas and Rev. James Seale of Maryland; daughter, Kathleen Orlowski of Myrtle Beach; brother, Edwin Wickham of N.J.; sisters, Eva Bogacz of N.J., and Gloria Lindley of N.J.; grandchildren, Susan Orlowski, Kristin Sylvia, Meghan Laska, Thomas Corbin, Jonathan Corbin, Robert Seale, Terrel Jenkins, Anthony Seale, David Seale and Michael Seale;

and 10 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Sunday at Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

LITTLE RIVER -- Freddie Mae Vaught, 58, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Seacoast Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Shields Funeral Home, Inc.

Elneta H. Ward

TABOR CITY, N.C. -- Elneta Hewett Ward, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at her residence. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday in the Inman Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Hosea Simmons Cemetery at Nakina. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ronald D. Wood

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Ronald David Wood, 67, of Seminole Trail, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Center. Arrangements will be announced by Brunswick Funeral Service and Crematory, Shallotte, N.C.

Eileen G. Woods

DURHAM -- Eileen Greene Woods, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born May 31, 1918 in Hopedale, Mass. to Peter James and Julia McCarthy Greene. Eileen entered the Marine Corps and was assigned an administrative position at the Pentagon. She met her husband, the late Roger M. Woods, while both were stationed in Washington, DC. The family spent several years in Arlington, Va., later moving to Camp Lejeune, and ultimately relocating to her husband's native Durham in 1969.

Mrs. Woods worked for Shaw Decorating for many years. Retirement was a misnomer for a woman who never slowed her pace in order to serve others. She was devoted to volunteer work, dividing her time between Durham Regional Hospital and St. Matthew Catholic Church, where she was a charter member.

Eileen was also a member of the Triangle Luncheon Civitan Club, the Fifty-Plus Club, and Women in Construction. For over 20 years she participated in the Gerofit exercise program for seniors at the VA Medical Centre.

Small in stature yet robust in spirit, Eileen maintained a remarkable, positive outlook through all the changes and challenges of life. With feistiness and boundless energy, she defied her age, remaining "on the go" to enrich the lives of her family and those benefiting from her generous service.

Surviving are her children, Richard J. Woods (Cathy) of Myrtle Beach, John M. Woods II of Caldwell, N.C., Frances W. (James) Vurnakes of Durham, and Peter J. (Bonnie) Woods of Durham; her grandchildren, Christopher and Christina Vurnakes; and Christopher, P.J., Matthew and Caitlin Woods; a step grandson, Michael Dixon; and step great grandchildren, Michael W. and Kaitlyn Dixon; a sister, Rita Harpin; and brothers, John and Jimmy Greene.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 1 p.m. Saturday from St. Matthew Catholic Church, Durham, with interment following in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Alberta P. Anderson

DARLINGTON -- Alberta Parkman Anderson, born Feb. 9, 1916, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at Bethea Retirement Center, Darlington, S.C. Alberta was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, T. Gordon Anderson.

Alberta taught elementary education at Remount Baptist Church School and First Baptist Church School in Charleston, S.C. She was an avid bell collector, owning bells of every size, shape, and material. She authored a book for children entitled "Ding". Alberta was a member of the Waccamaw Chapter of the Eastern Star, serving as President. She was also a member of the Iris Garden Club in Conway.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas G. Anderson, M.D. and his wife, Elaine of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and R. Jack Anderson and his wife, Marjorie of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Tamara M. Anderson of Marathon, Fla., and Jonathan G. Anderson of Columbus, Ohio. Alberta is also survived by her favorite nephew, Rev. Bruce Hall and his wife, Margaret of Pamplico, S.C.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Hall officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Bethea Retirement Center, Computer Room, 157 Home Street, Darlington, SC 29532.

Llalane Barker

LITTLE RIVER -- Llalane Barker, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1933 in Horry County, S.C., a daughter of the late Nathan and Flora Edge Adams.

Survivors include three sons, Harold H. Barker of Atlanta, Ga., Robert E. Barker of Charleston, and Randall A. Barker of Kenosha Wis.; a daughter, Glenda Ann Ramson of Little River; three brothers, Robert Adams and Jack Adams, both of Little River, Ernie Adams of Florida; two sisters, Sue Keen of Conway, Eleanor Smallwood of North Myrtle Beach, 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a long time companion, Robert Brewer. She was predeceased by a brother, Dick Adams.

The funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Lee Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Robert Tate of Weirton, W.Va. will officiate. Burial will be private with the family. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory of Little River/North Myrtle Beach.
