Elizabeth B. Hogg

CHARLESTON -- Elizabeth "Liz" Booth Hogg, wife of John Charles Hogg, entered into eternal rest the afternoon of Jan. 9, 2004.

Mrs. Hogg was born April 8, 1938, a daughter of the late J.B. "Chic" Booth and Lina Mae Todd Chamberlain. She was a member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a member of Eastern Star, Elks Does and Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by her husband of Charleston; one son, John C. Hogg II of Buchanan, Ga.; two daughters, Linda Bishop of Joppa, Md., and Cindie Hogg of Summerville; five grandchildren, Brandon Bishop, Taylor Bishop, Brandy Southerland and Shaun Southerland. Mrs. Hogg was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Duan Rafford.

The relatives and friends of Mrs. Hogg are invited to attend her funeral services in J. Henry Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at 2 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, Sunday between 6 and 8 p.m..

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Bank of America Bldg., N. Charleston, SC 29406 or Shriners Hospital Greenville Unit, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

James. I. Johnson

BOLIVIA, N.C. -- James Irvin Johnson, 94, of Mills Trail, SE, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 in Dosher Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday in the Chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory, Supply Chapel. Interment will follow in the Robbins Cemetery.

Allen G. Johnston

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. -- Allen Garfield Johnston, 30 of 4th Street, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at his residence. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Monday in the New Life Baptist Church Cemetery, Exum. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory, Supply Chapel is in charge.

Shirley Lux

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Shirley Lux, 83, died on Jan. 8, 2004. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens. McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge.

William F. Potter

MURRELLS INLET -- William F. "Bill" Potter,81, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at his home following an illness.

He was born Dec. 30, 1923 in Albany, N.Y. He was a life long resident of Warrensburg, N.Y., and has been a resident of Murrells Inlet since 1995. Bill served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He was best know as the owner of Potter's Express Trucking Co. of Warrensburg, N.Y. He owned and operated the business for 45 years before retiring. Bill was a Life Member of the VFW Post #821 of Warrensburg where he held various offices including Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion post in Warrensburg. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with his many friends.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sheila Potter; one daughter, Nancy and her husband, Brian; one son Jeff and his wife, Donna, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Billy, in 1986.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Monday at Litchfield Pawleys Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Pawleys Island. Burial will be in the spring in Warrensburg, N.Y.

Thelma S. Prince

WHITEVILLE, N.C. -- Mrs. Thelma Spivey Prince, 89, widow of the late Clyde B. Prince, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at the Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville, N.C.

Born Jan. 16, 1915 in Loris, she was the daughter of the late Macon Archie and Lola Spivey. Thelma and Clyde enjoyed more than 52 years of marriage and resided in Loris. Mrs. Prince has lived in Whiteville, N.C., for the past 9 years.

Mrs. Prince is survived by a son, C. Carlton and wife, Mary Jean of Whiteville, N.C.; a daughter, Glenda Prince Boozer and husband, Tom, of Lexington, S.C.; and a son, Rodney L. Prince of North Myrtle Beach. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Barry Morgan Boozer of Lexington, S.C.

Funeral services will be Mon., Jan. 12, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Oak Dale Baptist Church in Loris. The family will welcome guests at 321 Fuller Street in Whiteville, N.C. any time. Scheduled visitations are Sun., Jan. 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Whiteville residence and in the Oak Dale Church Fellowship Hall following the service. The family will also meet at Hardwick Funeral Home in Loris from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Hardwick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Rankin

LORIS -- Mrs. Ruby Todd Langley Rankin, age 77, of the Allsbrook community, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness.

She was born November 9, 1926 in Loris. Mrs. Rankin was the wife of Mr. Wilson Rankin of Loris and the daughter of the late M.C. Todd and the late Arcy Faulk Todd. Mrs. Rankin was homemaker and a long-standing member of Cane Branch Baptist Church and recently became a member of the Loris First Baptist Church.

Survivors including her husband are two sons: Jeff Langley and his wife, Marsha, of Lake Wylie and Howard Langley of Waxhaw, N.C.; one step-son; Ross Rankin and Dianna, of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Judy L. Barton and her husband, Scottie, of Togiak, Alaska and Laura L. Roberts and her husband, Lance, of Chester; and one step-daughter, Mary Esta Jacobs and husband, David, of Loris; two brothers, Boyd Todd and his wife, Edna, of Clemson and W. Leamon Todd of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Thelma Gerald of North Myrtle Beach and Leona Cole, and husband, Ted of Columbia; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Cane Branch Baptist Church with entombment following at Southeastern Memorial Gardens. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Alvin Jackson, the Rev. Drew Jackson and the Rev. Gary Harrelson. Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hardwick Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Renee Ward, 5009 Broad Street, Loris, SC 29569. Directed by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris.

Woodrow Small

LORIS -- Mr. Woodrow Small, age 88, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Loris Extended Care in Loris.

He was the husband of the late Viola Hodge Small. He is survived by two sons; Billy Brooks and wife, Shirley Small of Loris and Wilson Woodrow and wife, Brenda Small of Thomasville, N.C.; one daughter, Jenny and husband, Guy C. Williams of Loris; four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Mon. at 2 p.m. in Dogwood Hill Baptist Church with burial in the Williamson Cemetery at Green Sea. Visitation will be held Sunday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the Inman Funeral Home in Tabor City, N.C.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Dogwood Hill Baptist Church, 1040 Mt. Zion Rd., Loris, SC 29569

Cleavy 'C.J.' James Smith

ALBERMARLE, N.C. -- Cleavy "C.J." James Smith, age 89, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1914 in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of the late Laura Page Morton Smith and the late Duncan Monroe Smith and was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Mae "Bert" Simpson Smith.

He was a graduate of Oakboro School Class of 1934. As a youth, he worked at the Goody Shop in Albermarle. He was N.C. Sales Manager for Standard Coffee Company. He was founder and operator of Smith Smart Company, a men's and ladies' clothing company in Charlotte. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #676 in Charlotte. He also was a Shriner with the Charlotte Oasis Temple. While at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Charlotte, he served as a Deacon. He also was a member of West Albermarle Baptist Church.

Having a personal record of 13 holes in one, Mr. Smith enjoyed golf and had a handicap of five when was 75 years old. On two different occasions, his son, Steve, and his grandson, Billy, witnessed a "hole in one", made by C.J. He was a member of Carolina Country Club in Charlotte. He served as a starter at several Myrtle Beach golf clubs.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Smith and Ellis Smith and eight sisters, Eva Jane Huneycutt, his twin sister, Fannie Lambert, Elsie Mauldin, Carrie Fesperman, Thelma Efird, Gatha Allman, Virginia Redfern and Geneva Lambert.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-laws, Steve and Cindy Smith of Charlotte, N.C., Kenneth and Patty Smith of Irmo; a daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Bill Pigg of Charlotte; three brothers, D.J. Smith and wife, Geraldine, of Albemarle, N.C., Everett Smith of Conetow, N.C.; Gerald Smith of Mt. Airy, N.C.; half-sister, Hilda Valesquez of Ft. Washington, Md.; grandchildren, Billy Pigg and wife, Jeannine of Statesville, N.C., Sharon Smith Fuller and husband, Darren of Huntersville, N.C., Chris Beam of Charlotte, N.C., Chad Smith and wife, Heather of Charlotte, N.C., Whitney Smith Johnson and husband, John of Birmingham, Ala.; and great-grandchildren, Chelsie Fuller and Austin Fuller.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Hartsell Funeral Home, Lefler Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clay Waters officiating. Entombment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C.
