John R. Stokes

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- John R. Stokes, 86, of Creek View Drive, died Friday, December 26, 2003 in the lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center of Wilmington, N.C.

Born in Niles, Mich. On Jan. 23, 1917, he was a son of the late LeRoy and Nellie Ruhmous Stokes. He was a retired executive with the Inter-City Motor Coach Manufacturing Company and a WWII, United States Army Veteran. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of the Sea Trail Men's Group.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Marjorie VanVoorst Stokes are two sons, Robert J. Stokes of Plano, Texas and Stephen John Stokes of New Boston, N.H.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at 10 a.m. in St. Brendan Catholic Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 735-A, Wilmington, NC 28401 or St. Brendan Catholic Church, P.O. Box 2984, Shallotte, NC 28459. Brunswick Funeral Service and Crematory of Shallotte, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

Freddie Mae Vaught

LITTLE RIVER -- Freddie Mae Vaught, 58, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Seacoast Medical Center. The funeral will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, in Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family will assemble at the deceased's residence at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Shields Funeral Home is serving the family.

Manuel Viera Velozo

MYRTLE BEACH -- Manuel Viera Velozo, 81, of Chapin Mobile Home Park, died Friday, Jan. 9th. Funeral arrangements will be announced by McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach.

Kayla Jane Wenrich

MYRTLE BEACH -- Kayla Jane Wenrich, 15, of the Forestbrook Community, died Friday Jan. 9, 2004.

Family members include her father, Jack Wenrich; her mother, Susan Swindell Wenrich and Michael John Wenrich.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at Christ Community Church, Conway on Monday, Jan. 12th at 2 p.m. Visitation at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, will be Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lynette E. Whitehead

CALABASH, N.C. -- Mrs. Lynette E. Whitehead, 91, of Watson Avenue, "The Village at Calabash", died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 in Autumn Care of Shallotte. Surviving is her daughter Lois Puls and husband, Tom of Calabash; her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Prout Funeral Home, Verona, N.J. Local arrangements by Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory, Supply Chapel.

Thomas Beasley, Jr.

BRONX, N.Y. -- Thomas Beasley, Jr., 64, originally of Georgetown died Sunday, Apr. 4, 2004 in New York. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church in the Sampit Community of Georgetown, under the direction of Wilds Funeral Home. Visitation will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Sanctuary of St. Paul AME Church until time of the service.

Carl K. 'Ken' Burdiss

CONWAY -- Carl Kenneth "Ken" Burdiss, 66, formerly of Boone, N.C., died Tuesday, Apr. 6, 2004 at home.

He was born August 29, 1937 in W.Va., to Carla Epling Burdiss and the late Carl H. Burdiss. He attended Beckley College in Beckley, W.Va. and received a B.S. Degree in Sociology from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, N.C. He was a former manager of Sears for 15 years and a retired salesman for Mack Brown, Inc., GM Dealership, both located in Boone, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Phillips Burdiss of the home; one son, Gary Burdiss and wife, Kaye of Purlear, N.C.; his mother, Carla Burdiss Farley of Fla.; two step-daughters, Pamela Schmidt and husband, Greg of Manhattan, Kan. and Deanne Holden of Conway; one grandson, Cody Burdiss; one granddaughter, Cassie Burdiss, both of Purlear, N.C.; one step-grandson, Daniel Durham; and one step-granddaughter, Brittani Durham, both of Conway.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, N.C. with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Old Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Boone.

Flowers are appreciated. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1903, Boone, NC 28607. Hampton Funeral Service of Boone, N.C. is serving the family.

Jean Fontaine

GEORGETOWN -- Jean Fontaine, 71, wife of George Fontaine, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at her residence. Memorial funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Apr. 12 in Graham Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside committal service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Conn.

Roger Dale Garris

CONWAY -- Roger Dale Garris, age 58, of Bonnie Lane, died Thursday, April 8, 2004 at his residence following an illness. Mr. Garris was born in Conway, a son of the late Rannie Marshall and Edith Haithcock Garris.

Surviving are two sons, Gerry Dale Garris of Myrtle Beach and Timothy Hinson Garris of Conway; one brother, Sherman Garris of Conway; five sisters, Wendy Rider, Hazel Cook, Mary Hance, Dellera Davis and Cindy Garris, all of Conway; and three grandchildren, Jacob Garris, Jonathan Garris and Brandon Garris.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Seay officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James H. 'Stub' High

ANDREWS -- James H. "Stub" High, 67, husband of Barbara Thomas High, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Arrangements will be announced by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Andrews Chapel.

Hazel Ward Lang

MYRTLE BEACH -- Hazel Ward Lang, age 79, of Rosebud Lane, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at her residence.

Born June 6, 1924 in Windsor, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John R. Ward and Annie Hazel Cowan Lambert . Mrs. Lang moved to the Socastee area in 1960 from Georgetown. She was a member of Socastee Baptist church and had retired from the former Nations Bank with 15 years of service in 1987. Mrs. Lang was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Lang.

Surviving are two daughters, Alicia Lang Owens and her husband, Bryan of Myrtle Beach and Harriett Lang of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Mary Anne White of Beaufort; three brothers, Vincent Ward of Bluffton, Wendell and Louis Lambert both of Beaufort; one grandson, Dusty McDonald and wife, Rita of Murrells Inlet; and two great grandchildren, Jon and Jeb McDonald.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 10 at Socastee Baptist Church directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.. Burial will follow at Ocean Woods Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Apr. 9 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Socastee Baptist Church, 3690 Socastee Blvd., Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.

Irving Matthews

LITTLE RIVER -- Irving Matthews, age 78 of the Brooksville Community, died Monday, Apr. 5, 2004 at home following an illness.

Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Matthews; a brother, Ronnie Matthews; one granddaughter; a great-grandson; a foster sister, Eileen Morgan; a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Murphy; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia (James) Bellamy, Elnora (Lee Arthur) Gore, Fred (Margie) Ford, Harold (Mablelene) Ford, Dexter (Margaret) Ford, James Alston (Catherlene) Ford, and Douglas (Geraldine) Ford.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Latimer's Funeral Home.

William 'Bill' H. Mullis

MYRTLE BEACH -- William "Bill" Haskell Mullis, 36 originally of Cabarrus County, N.C., died Tuesday, Apr. 6, 2004. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel in Midland, N.C. Burial will follow in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Monroe, N.C. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert A. 'Bobby' Sims

CHANDLER, N.C. -- Robert Anderson "Bobby" Sims, husband of Lula Bell Wilson Sims, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at the Mission Hospital in Ashville, N.C. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Apr. 9 at the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
