Jack Lewis Armstrong

LAKE NORMAN, N.C. -- Jack Lewis Armstrong, 75, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Jack was born January 29, 1929 in Norfolk, Va., to Amalie and the late Jack Armstrong. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. Jack was founder of Armstrong Optical Co. in Winston-Salem, where he lived until moving the Lake Norman in1979. While in Winston-Salem, he was very active in the Little Theatre, Jaycees, and was a past member of the Twin City Club and Bermuda Run. At the time of his death, he was co-owner of The Optical Shop in Cornelius.

As a young man, Jack worked in Myrtle Beach where he made many wonderful friends. He was a member of the Shaggers' Hall of Fame and Living Legends and danced in a shagging exhibition in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Jack was a long-time member of the Olympic Club, a Winston-Salem social club, and the Lake Norman Social Club, all of whom are life-long friends.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Cranfill Armstrong; daughter, Debbie Lipinsky and her husband, Tripp; mother, Amalie Armstrong; brother, Dan Armstrong and his wife, Georganna; sister, Nancy Dail and her husband, Jim; one grandson, Cory Lipinsky; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty "Friz" L. Armstrong; his father, Jack Armstrong; his brother Bobby; and his sister, Mary Wilson. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Voglers & Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1506 Gumm Plaza, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 or to the charity of one's choice.

Lloyd C. Conner

SURFSIDE BEACH -- Lloyd C. Conner, Ret. Major, US Air Force, age 78 of Surfside Beach, died Friday, Apr. 9, 2004 at Grand Strand Health Care.

Born March 23, 1926 in Tuxedo, N.C., he was the son of the late Lee Thomas and Della Mary McAbee Conner. Mr. Conner was a World War II, US Air Force veteran serving for 24 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Surfside and a member of the Myrtle Beach Masonic Lodge. Mr. Conner had been owner of Conner Realty in Surfside Beach.

Surviving are his wife, Vera L. Conner; children, Lloyd M. Conner and wife, Terry of Fla., Patsi C. Marlowe of Murrells Inlet, Suzie C. Jordan and husband, Kenny, and Lee A. Conner, all of Surfside Beach; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Surfside with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Cecil Cook

SUPPLY, N.C. -- Cecil Cook, 76 of Dover Drive, formerly of Lakeview, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. A graveside funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, Apr. 12 at Brunswick Memorial Gardens in Shallotte, N.C.

George Stephen Corder

LORIS -- George Stephen Corder, 51 of West Dogwood Road, died Friday, Apr. 9, 2004 at his resident following an illness. Services will be private. Ward Funeral Home of Loris is serving the family.

Frank Henry Freiherr

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Frank Henry Freiherr, age 83 of Litchfield Country Club, died Friday, Apr. 9, 2004 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Born November 22, 1920 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Henry F. and Victoria Johnson Freiherr. Mr. Freiherr was a 1940 graduate of Purdue University and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was a past member of the New Jersey Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. Freiherr was an active member and past president of Litchfield Country Club Golf Assoc., member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church, and the Murrells Inlet Masons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mina Jean Freiherr.

Surviving are his son, Stephen Freiherr of Tenn.; daughter, Kathleen "Kathie" Fowler of Ky.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Burns of OH.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.

John L. Ganley

GEORGETOWN -- John L. Ganley, 81, widower of Maxine M. Ganley, succumbed to cancer Thursday, Apr. 1, 2004 at The Lakes at Litchfield. In the final weeks, he was lovingly cared for by family, friends, and the staff at The Lakes.

Mr. Ganley was born February 14, 1923 in Lawrence, Mass. He attended Boston University and the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was Comptroller of the Federal Renegotiation Board and Senior Staff Member in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Moving to Cincinnati, OH, he was Director of Program Management and Purchasing for the Avco Corporation. Mr. Ganley then moved on to become the Director of Administration of Weston Instruments, Inc. in N.J. He then became Senior Vice President and General Manager of Superior Manufacturing and Instrument Corporation in Long Island City, N.Y.

He served twelve years in the federal government in a variety of financial management positions. In the Department of Housing and Urban Development, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Housing Production and Assistant Deputy Under-Secretary. He held a variety of high-level positions in the Agency for International Development, including Director of Appraisal and Auditor General. With the ACTION agency, an independent federal program with the mission of fostering volunteer service, Mr. Ganley served as Deputy Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Moving back to the private sector, he was a Group Vice President of Safetran Systems Corporation in Louisville, Ky. In 1980, he joined Family Health International in N.C., a not-for-profit company devoted to improving maternal and child health in the Third World. He served as Deputy Director, then Executive Vice President until his semi-retirement in 1986. Mr. Ganley was instrumental in the formation of a for-profit affiliate of Family Health International in 1986, known as Clinical Research International, and served as its Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until it was sold in December 1990 and subsequently became known as ClinTrials Research. Mr. Ganley became a Director of Family Health International's Board in 1991 and has served until his death.

He was a 22 year resident of Wedgefield Plantation and has been very active in the Georgetown community, working on the County Board of Elections and serving on the Board of the Salvation Army, helping to build a new thrift store and chapel.

John L. Ganley and his wife of 60 years, Maxine, who preceded him in death last October, are survived by two daughters, Corynn Ganley of Hillsborough, N.J. and Sharon G. Riggs and her husband, Randy of South Burlington, Vt; one brother, Robert Ganley of Exeter, N.H.; and one sister, Pauline Garnett of Hampton, N.H.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Apr. 13 at Georgetown Presbyterian Church, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 2716, Georgetown, SC 29442 or Tidelands Community Hospice Inc., 2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.

Elaine Gifford

CONWAY -- Elaine Gifford, age 78, wife of the late Philip Gifford, died Friday, Apr. 9, 2004 at her residence following an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

Gregory A. Gore

TABOR CITY, N.C. -- Gregory A. Gore, 42 died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 in Loris following an automobile accident. Arrangements will be announced by Troy's Funeral Home.

Rita O. Green

MYRTLE BEACH -- Rita O. Green, age 87, died Friday, Apr. 9, 2004 at Grand Strand Health Care.

Born April 11, 1916 in Pulaski, Va., she was the daughter of the late James. H. and Mary Katherine Talbort Owens. Mrs. Green was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, W.O. Green and a grandson, Kelly Roach.

Surviving are her daughter Katherine L. Roach and husband, Randolph; sister, Pauline Myers of Pulaski, Va.; stepdaughter, Sarah Jo Singleton of Garden City Beach; granddaughters, Teresa Stanley of Shenandoah, Va., Anita Poston of Myrtle Beach, Cynthia Ham of Woodbridge, Va., and Randa Roach of Longs; eight great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandson.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ocean Woods Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

James H. 'Stub' High

ANDREWS -- James Holye "Stub" High, 67, died Thursday, Apr. 8, 2004 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mr. High was born September 22, 1936 in Anson County, N.C., the son of James "Jim" High and Mary Lee Story High. He was a retired millwright with Flour Daniel Inc. He was a former U.S. Marine, South Carolina National Guardsman, and a member of the New Hope Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Barbara Thomas High of Andrews, are, three sons, Barry Glen High Sr. and his wife, Lisa, James William "Willie" High Sr. and his wife, Gloria, all of Georgetown, and James Patrick High of Columbiana, OH; three stepsons, Jimmy Thomas, James Thomas of Andrews, and Jerry Thomas of Nesmith; five stepdaughters, Jennie Weaver, Judy Miller, Jill Young, Jackie Elliott, all of Georgetown, and Joyce Collins of Temple, Ga.; a brother, Carl High of Andrews; a sister, Ann Ethridge of Georgetown; four grand-children, Barry Glen High Jr., Kenneth Kyle High, James William High Jr., and April Renee High; ten step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 10, 2004 at New Hope Christian Fellowship Church. Burial will follow in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery, directed by Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
