Harry E. Joyce, Jr.

SURFSIDE BEACH -- Harry E. Joyce, Jr., age 83, of Lone Oak Lane, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Newark, N.J., Mr. Joyce was the son of the late Gwen Sims Joyce and Harry E. Joyce, Sr.

He graduated from Southside High School in Newark where he met and was married for 62 years to his high school sweetheart, Madeline.

He entered the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a machinist mate first class on the aircraft carrier "The Kassan Bay."

He received a bachelor degree from Rutgers University in business administration. Mr. Joyce retired from N.J. Bell Telephone Company after 36 years of service.

He was a member of the Surfside United Methodist Church, VFW Post 10420, Moose Lodge 2351, the Newark Masonic Lodge, 21 years in the Elks, and Raccoon Run Golf Club.

Surviving are his wife, Madeline; son, James Richard Joyce and wife; Kathy; daughter, Nancy Carol Luts and husband; Jack, sister, Evelyn Ruppel and husband; Richard; grandson, John Thomas Lutz; and granddaughter, Diana Joy Lutz.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Robert Frank Leima

MYRTLE BEACH -- Robert Frank Leima, age 79 of Brenda Place, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at his residence following an illness.

He was born March 16, 1925, in Tallinn, Estonia, a son of the late Wilhelm and Irena Swirnow Leima. Mr. Leima was a native of Estonia and immigrated to the United States in 1959. He was a longtime resident of Bethel, Conn., where he raised a family of three sons. He was a speaker of four languages and participant in the Myrtle Beach German Club. He loved physical activities and was often found at Pepper Geddings Athletic Club.

Surviving are his wife, Gwyneth Evans Leima of Myrtle Beach; sons, Martin Leima of Pleasanton, Calif., Kevin Leima, and Gareth Leima both of Duluth, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel, with visitation 1 hour prior to services.

Memorials may be made to Regency Hospice, 4705-D Oleander Dr., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Dorothy Jane V. Lewis

LITTLE RIVER -- Dorothy Jane V. Lewis, age 63, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Mount Zion AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Maurice Muser, Jr.

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Maurice Muser, Jr., husband of Edna Muser died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in Prince George Healthcare Center. Arrangements will be announced by Graham Funeral Home of Georgetown.

Margaret Gilbert Tatum

OCEAN ISLE BEACH -- Margaret Gilbert Tatum, age 69, of Lake Tree Estates, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at her residence.

Surviving are her husband, Marshall Tatum; a son, David Aycock of Lea-wood, Kan.; four stepsons, Tim Tatum, Dan Tatum, Ronnie Tatum of Charlotte, N.C., and Robbie Tatum of Holden Beach, N.C.; two daughters, Ann T. Hewett (Kendall) of Shallotte, N.C., and Andrea Cerney (Bill) of Atlanta; a brother, Homer "Sonny" Gilbert, Jr. of Henderson, Texas; a sister, Linda McNeeley of Cullowhee, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Seaside United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Robert Redmond. Inurnment will be in Seaside United Methodist Church Memorial Gardens. Brunswick Funeral Service & Crematory of Shallotte, N.C., is serving the family.

Memorials may be made to Seaside United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 1300 Seaside Road S.W., Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469; or Liberty Hospice, 1120 Ocean Hwy. W., Supply, NC 28462.

James E. Brown

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- James Edward "JT" Brown, 56, son of Mrs. Fannie M. Brown and the late Mr. Russell Brown, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, after an illness. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Touching Lives Saving Souls Church in North Conway, burial will follow in the Dandridge Community Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at McKiever Funeral Home, Inc.

Edward W. Davis Sr.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Edward W. Davis Sr., 84, of Stonebridge died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Conway Medical Center.

Born May 2, 1919 in Providence, R.I., he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Francis Davis. Mr. Davis was a World War II veteran in U.S. 8th Air Force serving in England. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 10420 both in Murrells Inlet. He was past Exultant Ruler and life member of Elks Lodge 105; Past Faithful Navigator, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree; Past Commander of U.S. Navy League Trenton Council; Member of Catholic War Veterans; and charter member of Pennington Road Fire Dept all in Trenton, N.J. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Davis Long, two sisters, and a brother.

Surviving are his wife, Madeline Davis; sons, Edward W. Davis Jr. and wife, Madeline of Hamilton Square, N.J. and J. Bradford "Brad" Davis of Woodstock, Ga.; daughter, Madelyn Long and husband, Robert of Morrisville, Pa.; grandchildren, Todd Davis, Sean Davis, Bradford Davis, Jamie Lyn Long; one great granddaughter and brother, Joseph Davis of Morrisville, Pa.

Eddie wished to be remembered by his family and friends. Services will be private. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge.

William W. Douglas

LORIS -- William W. Douglas, 24, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Visitation will be at 2951 Sandy Bay Lane. Arrangements will be announced by United Funeral of Loris.

Susan Durdan

MYRTLE BEACH -- Susan Durdan, 86, of Myrtle Beach Manor, died Sunday, April 11, 2004. Funeral services will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. Litchfield Pawleys Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with local arrangements.

Wayland E. Fowler

LORIS -- Wayland E. Fowler, 81, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in Loris Hospital.

He was a native of Columbus County, the son of the late Mack D. and Izzie F. Fowler. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a long time employee of E. W. Fonvielle Feed Mill.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby B. Fowler of the home; one son, Anthony Fowler and wife, Karen of Loris; one daughter, Patricia F. Jackson and husband, Brooks of Green Sea; four grandchildren, Cameron Brooks Jackson and wife, Tami, Jamie Patrick Jackson and wife, Tara, Brent Neil Jackson, and Brad Elmore Fowler; three great-grandchildren, Joshua Skipper, Gabrielle Skipper and Grace Elizabeth Jackson; one brother, Walter Durwood Fowler of Tabor City, N.C.; and one sister, Ruth Harrelson of Tabor City, N.C.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Dogwood Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Jackson and the Rev. Billy Prince, with entombment in Twin City Memorial Gardens, Loris, S.C. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home, Inc., in Tabor City, N.C.

August Franchini Sr.

MYRTLE BEACH -- August Franchini Sr., 92, died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Franchini was born April 3, 1912 in Mengen, Germany, the son of the late Vittorio Franchini and Theresia Reiner Franchini. He was a retired brick mason and general contractor. Mr. Franchini was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater.

In 1929, at the age of 16, Mr. Franchini immigrated to the United States settling in New York City along with two sisters, an aunt, and an uncle. He moved to Myrtle Beach in 1935 where he became a brick mason and general contractor. During his long career he helped to build many homes, churches and businesses in the Myrtle Beach area. Later in his career he specialized in building and restoration work in the Pawleys Island area, including the restoration of the Waverly Plantation home. In Myrtle Beach he also built and co-owned and operated Franchini Court and Oak Haven Cottages, Rooms and Apartments. In 1948 Mr. Franchini was awarded the contract for laying the brick on The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium. Mr. Franchini proudly became a United States citizen in 1938.

Mr. Franchini was an active member of The American Legion Post # 40 for 58 years having served as the post commander 1969 - 1970. At the time of his death he was the oldest active and the longest serving member of Post #40. He was also a member of La Societe des Quarante Hommes at Huit Chevaux (40 & 8) Voiture #1316 for over 50 years and served as the Chef De Gare in 1954. Mr. Franchini was also the oldest active and longest serving current member of Votiture #1316.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Franchini Albaugh and her husband, Fred of Fort Worth, Texas; three sons, Alfred Franchini of Redlands, Calif., August Franchini, Jr. and his wife, Mary Jo of Smyrna, Ga., and Archie Franchini and his wife, Judy of Charleston, S.C. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Deborah Daigle of San Bernardino, Calif., Sandra Olson of Ironton, Ohio, Dennis Franchini of Redlands, Calif., Barbara Sheridan, of Ironton, Ohio, Celeste Albaugh, of Clarksville, Tenn., Freddie Albaugh of Harrison Township, Mich., Ken Franchini of Canton, Ga., and Sharon Johnson of Smyrna, Ga.; eleven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 16, at McMillian-Small Funeral Home. Burial will be at the All Saints Church, Waccamaw in Pawleys Island following the service. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 1506 Gumm Plaza, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29572 or to a charity of one's choice.
