Horace Lathan Holland

LORIS -- Horace Lathan Holland, age 79, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at his residence following an illness.

Mr. Holland was born September 29, 1924 in Erwin, N.C., a son of the late Sanford Holland and the late Flora Royals Holland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II and was of the Baptist faith. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Hollingsworth Holland.

Survivors include one son, H. Mitchell Holland and his wife, Holley of Loris; one daughter, Patricia "Pat" Matthews and her husband, Tommy of Longs; one brother, Charles Holland of Oak Island, N.C.; one sister, Carolyn Wrench of Clinton, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Brandy Holland Graham of Loris.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Cane Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Alvin Jackson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Myrtle J. Johnson

CONWAY -- Myrtle Janette Ballen Johnson, age 73, of Hwy. 905, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at her residence after an illness. Arrangements will be anno-unced by McKiever Funeral Home, Inc. of Conway.

Eva O'Nell King

LONGS -- Eva O'Nell King, 80 of Stevens Crossroads, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet following an illness. The family will receive friends 6 to8 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church. Arrangements will be announced by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris.

George A. Kornbau

MURRELLS INLET -- George A. Kornbau, age 68, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Geneva Phipps Sarvis

GALIVANTS FERRY -- Geneva Phipps Sarvis, 92, widow of Hubert Sarvis, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Marion Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Sarvis was born May 9, 1912 in Horry County, a daughter of the late Memory A. and Julie Bell Phipps. She was a homemaker and member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Sarvis are a daughter, Jessie Lou Martin and her husband, Eldon of Galivants Ferry; her grand-children, June Lambert of Galivants Ferry, Barry Martin and his wife, Karen of Galivants Ferry, Sharon Flowers and her husband, Henry of Galivants Ferry, Tammy Sarvis of Galivants Ferry, and Harold L. "Hal" Sarvis, Jr. and his wife, Julieanne of Galivants Ferry; great-grandchildren, Daron Lambert, Ryan Lambert and his wife, Becky, Drew Martin and his wife, Tiffany, Trent Martin, Brett Martin, Cameron Flowers, Seth Sarvis, and Carly Sarvis, her great-great grand-children, Dylan Lambert and Noah Lambert; and a sister, Genevieve Phipps Floyd of Galivants Ferry.

Mrs. Sarvis was predeceased by a son, Harold Larue Sarvis and a daughter-in-law, Alma Louteal Willoughby Sarvis.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, with the Rev. William Graham and Rev. Sam Clardy officiating. Burial will follow in Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church, 4465 Nichols Hwy., Galivants Ferry, SC 29544.

Gary D. Silverberg

LITTLE RIVER -- Gary David Silverberg, 47, formerly of Roslyn, N.Y., passed away suddenly Sunday, May 23, 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, of nearly 25 years. He is also survived by his three teenage sons, Jeffrey, Matthew, and Jonathan. Gary was the beloved son of Helen and the late Simon Silverberg, son-in-law of Phyllis and Bob Kaffey, and loving brother of Stephen and Michael Silverberg and their families. He was the brother-in-law of Robin Silverberg, Susan and Gil Joyce, and David and Kim Kaffey, and had several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

His zest for life as well as his magnetic personality will be sadly missed in this community.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Silverberg Scholarship Fund, in care of Temple Emanuel, 406 65th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

Leone 'Bunny' Slotchin

MYRTLE BEACH -- Leone "Bunny" Slotchin, age 79 of Deerfield Plantation died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at her home.

Born October 18, 1924 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Harlow and Leone Hilton Halliday. Mrs. Slotchin was formerly employed for 9 years by MIT in their Graphic Arts Department as Illustration and Production Manager. She was a retired director from the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York City and prior to retirement, she had taught children in the "Chapter One" program. For nine years Mrs. Slotchin had originated the Reach To Recovery program in Myrtle Beach and had served on the board of directors at Deerfield Plantation where she served as the welcome person.

Surviving are her husband, Ira Slotchin; daughter; Judy DeRose of Surfside Beach; and granddaughters, Heather Luce and Michele DeRose.

Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with visitation after the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Edwin Leon Thomas

CONWAY -- Edwin Leon Thomas, age 82 of Laurelwood Lane, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Conway Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

William J. Umstead

BEAVER, Pa. -- William J. Umstead, 88, died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at The Medical Center in Beaver, Pa., after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Beaver United Methodist Church. A private interment will be at Beaver Cemetery. Friends will be received 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Noll Funeral Home, Inc., 333 Third Street, Beaver, Pa.

Paul K. Zimmer

MURRELLS INLET -- Paul K. Zimmer, age 78 of Murrells Inlet, died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at National Healthcare of Garden City.

Born October 12, 1925 in Boston, he was the son of the late John Henry and Gertrude Hanson Zimmer. Mr. Zimmer had retired from Airco Industrial Gases in Acton, Mass., after 34 years of service and retired to the area in 1981.

He was a World War II, US Navy veteran serving as a plank owner on the USS Hank in the South Pacific. Mr. Zimmer was Commander of the American Legion, Post 284 and member of Theatre Three both in Acton. He was Chaplain for 18 years with the VFW, Post 10420 and past secretary of Masonic Lodge, #368 both in Murrells Inlet.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Cummings Zimmer; children, Donna Bicchieri of Pinehurst, N.C., Gail McDaniel of Grayson, Ga., Rj Zimmer of Helena, Mont., and Pamela Duran of Oregon City, Ore.; brother, Sumner D. Zimmer of Fla.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with military honors and Masonic rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VFW, 4359 Hwy 17 Bypass, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

Nancy Covington

AIKEN -- Mrs. Nancy Ingram Covington, 73, of Aiken, died Sunday May 30, 2004, at Eden Gardens Care Center in Aiken. Private funeral services are under the direction of George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, S.C. Memorial donations may be directed to the American Lung Association or the American Diabetes Foundation.

A daughter of the late Rev. Jesse L. and Mabel L. (Jones) Ingram, she was born in Thomasville, N.C. She just recently came to Aiken, having moved from West Columbia, where she had lived for a year with her daughter. Prior to the death of her second husband, she had lived in North Myrtle Beach for almost 20 years. She was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Myrtle Beach, SC and St. John United Methodist Church, Graniteville, S.C.

Mrs. Covington was predeceased by two husbands, Rev. Richard S. Covington Sr., who died in 1987, and Gordon Nicholson, who died in 2003.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Richard S. Covington Jr., North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Nan C. Moorer, Aiken, S.C., and Laura C. Neal, West Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Sylvia L. Eagle, Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Zachary R. Moorer, Brian M. Neal, Joseph R. Neal, Dylan R. Covington and Maylee S. Covington.
