Doretha M. Hughes

MURRELLS INLET -- Doretha Mishoe Hughes, 82, wife of the late Daniel Durant Hughes, of Berkeley Court, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Mrs. Hughes was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Wilson Paul and Mary Hattie Godbold Mishoe. She was a Charter member of the First Baptist Church in Murrells Inlet.

Surviving are one daughter, Doris Ann Norris and her husband, Jerry of Murrells Inlet; one step-son, Laurie Joseph Hughes of Murrells Inlet; one grandchild, Angel Marie Woodard and her husband, Michael of Murrells Inlet; one great-grandchild, Ashburn Leon Woodard; 15 step-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with the Rev. Matthew Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Aynor Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet, 3890 Hwy 17 By-pass, Murrells Inlet, S.C. 29576, or to the Murrells Inlet -Garden City Rescue Squad, PO Box 672, Murrells Inlet, S.C. 29576.

Myrtle Janette B. Johnson

CONWAY -- Mrs. Myrtle Janette Ballen Johnson, 73, of Highway 905, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at residence.

Survivors include children, Gerald Ballen and his wife, Alberta, Ricky Ballen and his wife, Julie, Kirby Ballen, Chris Ballen, Rose Brantley, Andrea Ballen, Mark Johnson, Michael King, Jeff King and his wife, Patricia, and Paul King; one granddaughter, Tiffany Ballen; and two grandsons, Jeremey Ballen and Anthony Ballen; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Bethel AME Church, with burial following in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. McKiever Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

George A. Kornbau

MURRELLS INLET -- George A. Kornbau, 68, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, S.C.

Born Feb. 18, 1936 in York, Pa., he was the son of the late Pius L. and Dorothy R. Eisensmith Kornbau. Mr. Kornbau was owner/operator of the Chart Room in Garden City Beach, S.C., for 22 years and former manager of Back Stage Deli in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was also the former manager of the South End Democratic Club, Outdoor Country Club, and the Meat Department for Acme Grocery, all in York, Pa. He was a member of Surfside Beach Moose Lodge 2351 where he served as the first elected Governor, Elks Lodge 2797, and the American Legion Post 178, both in Murrells Inlet, S.C. Mr. Kornbau was preceded in death by a grandson, Gerald D. Kornbau Jr.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Gloria Sue Kornbau of Murrells Inlet, S.C., are five sons, Jeffrey A. Kornbau, George A. Kornbau, Jr., Gerald D. Kornbau, all of York, Pa., Michael L. Kornbau of Myrtle Beach, S.C., John R. Champion of Washington D.C.; two daughters, Leslie J. Champion of Tampa, Fla., and Susan Celeste Champion of Inman, S.C.; six grandchildren, Heath, Scott, Michael, Victoria, Taylor, Madison; two brothers, Dale Kornbau and Bobby Kornbau, both of York, Pa.; two sisters, Charlotte R. Halpin and Audrey J. Lerew, both of York, Pa.; one niece, Yvette Scavuzzo of York, Pa.; beloved pet, Chevas, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11a.m., Thursday, June 3, 2004 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Robert G. Lesslie

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Robert Gettys Lesslie, 90, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Lakes at Litchfield.

Mr. Lesslie was born in Lesslie on July 31, 1913, a son of the late James Dixon Lesslie and Nina Gettys Lesslie. He moved to Mt. Holly, N.C. as a teenager and graduated from Mt. Holly High School. Mr. Lesslie attended Duke University and graduated from Erskine College. After graduation he worked for Soil Conservation Headquarters in Columbia prior to serving in the Navy as an ensign during World War II. Mr. Lesslie served on a destroyer in the South Pacific and his destroyer was with the Battleship Missouri at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Harbor.

Mr. Lesslie owned and operated LeMac Service Station, Fort Lawn Motel, Chester Motor Lodge, and the Squire Restaurant. He served as Mayor of Ft. Lawn for a number of years. Mr. Lesslie was a member of Chester Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church. He was a mason and former member of the Rotary Club of Chester. Mr. Lesslie was a past president of the Chester Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy L. Mueller and her husband, Howard of Georgetown; four grandchildren, David Hamilton III of Pawleys Island, Lesslie Hamilton of Athens, Ga., and Bobby Mueller and Kate Mueller, both of Georgetown.

Mr. Lesslie was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Ann Gettys Lesslie; a son, Robert G. Lesslie Jr.; and a brother, James D. Lesslie Jr.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at the graveside in Neely's Creek Cemetery in Lesslie. Officiating will be the Rev. Dwight Pearson.

Memorials may be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, Inc., 2591, N. Fraser St., Georgetown, S. C. 29440.

The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home and Bass and Cauthen Funeral Home of Rock Hill are in charge of arrangements.

Robert 'Bob' F. McLaughlin

GEORGETOWN -- Robert "Bob" F. McLaughlin, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at his home on the Black River after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Frances A. McLaughlin, also of Georgetown; his son, Robert L. McLaughlin of Two Harbors, Minn.; and his daughters, Tammy R. Teague, of Long Beach, Calif., and Tina L. Teague, of St. Paul, Minn.; his daughter, Sheila F. Steinberg her husband, Harris, and their children Jacob and Jessica, of Doylestown, Pa.; his mother, Gertrude Black McLaughlin, of Dexter, Maine; his three sisters, and their spouses; Ann and Eddie Crowley, of Carmel, Maine; Rose and Richard Stocker, of Exeter, Maine, Sally and Bob Campbell, of Portland, Maine; his brother-in-law, Red Crossman and his wife, Marge of Mt. Pleasant; his two sisters-in-law, and their spouses, Bunny and Leo Gendreau, of Bangor, Maine, and John and Judy Dahl of Herman, Maine; and his two sisters-in-law, Valerie McMillan of Frankfort, Maine; and Cheryl D. Vigneault, of Port Charlotte, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at Duncan Memorial Methodist Church on Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Church following the service.

A second Memorial Service will be held at Dexter Methodist Church in Maine, at a date yet to be announced. His remains will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Duncan Memorial Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, S. C. 29440 or Habitat for Humanity for Georgetown Co., P.O. Box 2411, Georgetown, S.C. 29442 will be appreciated.

The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mark C. Puett

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Mark Chandler Puett, 33, of East Franklin Blvd., died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., he was a son of the late John Edward "Buddy" Puett. Mark was employed by Vehicare Inc. as a Facility Manager. He was a graduate of North Gaston High School and Appalachian State University. He as a member of First United Methodist Church of Dallas, Boy Scouts of America, Troop 3, Eagle Scout, Asst. Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster.

Mark was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Evelyn Hovis Puett and Betsey Mauney.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Lynn Puett; his mother, Carol Mauney Puett of Dallas; son, Jared T. Anderson of Gastonia; daughters, Ashton P. Anderson of Gastonia and unborn daughter, Kylie Elizabeth Chandler Puett; brother, Gregory R. Puett of Dallas; grandparents, A.W. "Bud" Puett of Dallas and Charles Mauney of Dallas; in-laws, Harrell and Pat Hardwick of Conway, S.C., and Tom Baker of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church of Dallas, with the Rev. Carroll Flack officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 301 W. Trade Street, Dallas, N.C. 28034; Boy Scouts of America, Troop 3, 122 East Franklin Blvd. Gastonia, N.C. 28054, or Heart Society of Gaston County, 220 East Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, N.C. 28052.

Angie R. Smith

GEORGETOWN -- Angie R. Smith, 24, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, at Wilds Courtyard Chapel, with burial in New Light Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wilds Courtyard Chapel.

Helen E. Stevens

MYRTLE BEACH -- Helen E. Stevens, 98, mother of Alfred Stevens, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Myrtle Beach Manor.

Services will be held in Maryland. McMillan-Small Funeral Home is serving the family.
