Viola Quiles

LORIS -- Viola Quiles, 38, of Hwy 554, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004.

Ms. Quiles was born in Newark, N.J., a daughter of Eleno Quiles and Margarita Hernandez. She was employed by J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Surviving in addition to her mother of New York, and her father and stepmother Karen Quiles of New York, are one son, Ronnie Pepper Jr. of Loris; two brothers, Daniel Quiles and Andrew Quiles, both of New York; nine sisters, Nydia Quiles, Sonia Quiles, Marilyn Quiles, Margarita Quiles, Carmen Marrero, Jenise Moules, Nereida Ortiz and Wilma Ortiz, all of New York, and Priscilla Roman of New Jersey; special friend Bruno L Ramirez of Myrtle Beach.

The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at a later date in Amsterdam, NY. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Dorothy Wiggins Sandel

Dillon -- Mrs. Dorothy Wiggins Sandel, 56, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in her residence after an illness.

Born in Dillon County, April 30, 1948, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Wiggins and Alma Louise Campbell Wiggins. She was a technician with Wix and was of the Holiness faith.

Surviving are her husband, Bobby L. Sandel of Dillon; son, Bobby Darrell Sandel of Loris; daughters, Pamela Cox of Dillon and Teresa(James) Caulder of Dillon; sisters, Alma (Don) Hopkins of Florence, Beulah (Junior) Jackson of Latta, Faye Woodell of Florence, Diane (Billy) Blackmon of Latta and Mary (Jimmy) Dimery of Latta; brothers, Verney (Ann) Wiggins of Summerville, S.C., and David (Sally) Wiggins of Colgate, Okla.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in death by brothers, Jack and Franklin Wiggins; and sisters, Maxine Whittington and Margie Davis.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004 in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

William Earl Taylor

MYRTLE BEACH -- William Earl Taylor, 83, died Tuesday June 29, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.

He was born on May 12, 1921 in Raleigh, N.C., a son of the late William Taylor and Deaver Pugh Taylor but was raised from the age of five by his Uncle and Aunt, Robert and Josye Taylor.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force where he served as a bombardier during WWII. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the Elks club and the VFW in Murrells Inlet. Mr. Taylor was an avid lover of both sports and animals and had a dog named Captain and cats named Sam and Tamra.

Survivors include his wife of twelve years, Pearlie "Rusty" Hewitt Taylor of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Robert Taylor of Hickory, N.C.; two daughters, Patricia T. Cargill of Roanoke, Va., and Josye Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday July 2, 2004 at First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach with the Rev. Kenneth B. Timmerman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday July 1, 2004 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Katherine Van Vlake

GEORGETOWN -- Katherine Van Vlake, widow of Richard Lee Van Vlake, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at her daughter's residence in Andrews.

Mrs. Van Vlake was born Aug. 2, 1919 in Philadelphia, Miss., a daughter of the late Ollie Monroe Goldman and Ethel Mae Hicks Goldman.

She was a retired employee with the former Onetia Industries in Andres. She was a member of Nesmith Baptist Church and a member of the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class and the WMU of the church.

Surviving are four sons, Richard Van Vlake and his wife, Karen of Murrells Inlet, Ronald Lee Van Vlake and his wife, Sheila of Columbia, William H. Van Vlake and his wife Linda, and Michael Van Vlake and his wife, Pam, all of Georgetown; three daughters, Judy Hilliard and her husband, Tommy of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Helen Oliver and Her husband, Dickie of Georgetown, and Terry Parrott and her husband, Billy of Andrews; four brothers, Lee E. Goldman of Lynchburg, C.S. Goldman of Stockton, Calif., M.A. Goldman of Natchez, Miss., and Ramond Goldman of Pine Bluff, Ark; three sisters, Helen King of West Helena, Ark., Zennie Herring of Collinsville, Ill., and Frances Comeaux of Ferriday, La.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard Roy Van Vlake and a daughter, Irma Katherine Van Vlake.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 2, in Nesmith Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Craig Cribb. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Marian Bell

NORTH MYRLTE BEACH -- Marian Bell, 84, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004.

Born in Darlington, Colo., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Ernest Bell Sr. and Annie Sue Arnold Bell. Miss Bell was an active participant and sports enthusiast and had graduated from Limestone College, Gaffney, S.C. She taught for 28 years in the public school system in Spartanburg and Charlotte, where her students affectionately referred to her as "Ma Bell." She made her home in North Myrtle Beach, where she was a member of Ocean Drive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her sister: Jean Bell Oates.

Surviving are her sister: Miriam Bell Forsythe of Montgomery, Ala.; brothers and sister-in-law: Thomas Ernest Bell Jr. and Mary Cotton Bell of Orangeburg, S.C., and Kenneth R. Bell of Clemson, S.C.; and six nieces and six nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19 at Mr. Elon Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Elon Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 38, Lydia, S.C. 29079.

Taft K. Chandler

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Taft Kimple Chandler, 46, died Sunday, Aug. 22 2004. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris.

Horace McFalland Collins

LORIS -- Horace McFalland Collins, 78, of the Zoan section of Horry County, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004 at Marion County Medical Center following an illness.

Mr. Collins was born in Horry County, a son of the late Lanneau and Annie Jane McCracken Collins. He was a member of Zoan United Methodist Church. Mr. Collins was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of American Legion Post #41 in Loris. He was a retired farmer. He was predeceased by three brothers: J.T. Collins, Talmadge Collins, and Lamar Collins; and two great grandchildren: Ashley Pridgen and Carsan Elizabeth Hufford.

Surviving are his wife: Ruth A. Collins of Loris; two sons: Kenneth Collins and wife Judy of Florence and Anthony Collins and his wife Vicki of Loris; two daughters: Betty Jean Pridgen and her husband Joe of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Catherine Hufford and her husband Mike of Green Sea; nine grandchildren: Venus Dye of Rialto, Calif., Rodney Collins and Bryan Collins, both of Florence, James Pridgen, Uganda, East Africa, Chris Hufford of Mullins, Michael Hufford, Stacy Hufford, and David Collins all of Green Sea, and Brandon Collins of Loris; 12 great grandchildren; three brothers: William Collins and his wife Blanche, of Loris, Truluck Collins and his wife Christine of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. and George Collins and his wife Eva of Loris; two sisters: Annie Bell Hodges and her husband P.T. of Blackstone, Va. and Audrey Stroud and her husband Thomas of Nichols; and one sister-in-law: Mildred Collins of Elgin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Zoan United Methodist Church with Rev. Kerrie A. Plump officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends at Zoan United Methodist Church from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday.
