Gilbert B. Gottshall

SURFSIDE BEACH -- Gilbert B. Gottshall, 75, of Surfside Beach died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at his home with complication due to cancer.

Born in Souderton, Pa., he was the son of the late Henry G. and Edna Booz Gottshall. Mr. Gottshall was a graduate of Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania and began his teaching career in the Conestoga Valley School District, concentrating on business subjects. He went on to practice accounting at the Hamilton Watch Co. and then financial analysis with the Federal Mogul Corp, first in Lancaster then in Southfield, Mich., and Cuorgne, Italy. He was a lifelong volunteer and served as chairman on the Planning Commission of East Petersburg, Pa., where he was a Lions Club member and director for the National Assoc. of Accountants.

He moved to the area in 1989 where he was a volunteer with Mobile Meals of S.C., treasurer of PSEA and a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where was church auditor and treasurer. Mr. Gottshall enjoyed sports, travel, visiting with family and community events.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; daughters, Lorene Turkalo of Grand Rapids, Mich., Patti Holland and husband, Timothy of East Lansing, Mich., and Cindia Gottshall of Lancaster, Pa.; sons, Michael and wife, Lynne Christman of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Charles and wife, Jeannette Williams of Harrogate, UK; sister, Elizabeth Trostle of Lancaster, PA; brother, David Gottshall of Glen Ellen, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 14758, Surfside Beach, S.C. 29587 or Mercy Hospice, P.O. Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29578.

Mildred K. 'Mickey' Hayes

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Mildred Katherine "Mickey" Hayes, 70, wife of the late Ralph Filmore Hayes, Sr., died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 29, 1933 in Rocky Mount, N.C., a daughter of the late James Lawrence and Lucille Habourne Andrews.

She was a retired manager with JC Penny. She was a charter member of the First Christian Church in Florence and was a member of the Eastern Star and the North Myrtle Beach Garden Club where she loved working with flowers and won several first place ribbons for them.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Filmore Hayes, Jr. of Georgetown, S.C.; two daughters, Patsy Anne Hayes of North Myrtle Beach, and Debbie Leigh Hayes of Myrtle Beach,; seven grandchildren, Perry Guilford, Kelly, Jonathan, Ralph F. III, and Heather Hayes, Katherine Salmon, and Tina Blalock; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens in the Mausoleum Chapel, with Mark Lovely officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

Jearldene Herndon

NICHOLS -- Jearldene Herndon, 73, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at her residence after an illness.

Ms. Herndon was born Feb. 17, 1931 in Wealty, Okla., a daughter of the late Loyd and Leona Settlemayer Herndon. She lived 50 years of her life in Pampa, Texas, working as bookkeeper for Whites Home and Auto. She moved to Horry County in 2000. Ms. Herndon was a member of Mullins First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are a son, Rodney Hendon and his wife, Jennifer of Nichols; and eight grandchildren.

Ms. Herndon was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Loyd Hendon and two sisters, Darlene Dorsey and Bonnie Finney.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 at Mullins First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Dudley Parnell and the Rev. Ray Boone officiating. Burial will follow in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at the home of Rodney and Jennifer Herndon, at 10421 Highway, 917, Nichols, any time after 6 p.m.

Sadie Johnson Hunt

CONWAY-- Mrs. Sadie Johnson Hunt, 94, wife of the late Deacon Morris Hunt Jr., died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at the Conway Nursing Home. Arrangements will be announced by McKiever Funeral Home.

Charlotte Lawrence

GEORGETOWN -- Charlotte Lawrence, 73, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Friday in Old Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday at Walter S. Fraser Memorial Chapel. McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Henry Amos Smith Jr.

LORIS -- Henry Amos Smith Jr., 40, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Loris Hospital. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in High Hill Church in Nichols, with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Legette-Troy Funeral Home.

James 'Jim' Michael Sandel

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- James "Jim" Michael Sandel, 42, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004 in Tucker, Ga.

Jim was born in Tonawanda, N.Y., the son of David A. and Charlotte B. Sandel of Surfside Beach, S.C.

Surviving are his mother and father; one son, Eric Sandel; two daughters, Krisrtina and April Sandel of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David J. and Carol Sandel of Campbell, Calif., and Paul and Kathy Sandel of Charlotte, N.C.; many special nephews, and a niece; and a special close friend, Lynn Floyd of Kissimmee Fla.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29 at the Surfside United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Jason House United Methodist Church, Surfside, S.C.

Daniel Ray Tindall

GALIVANTS FERRY -- Daniel Ray Tindall, 18, of Ralph Road, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004.

Mr. Tindall was born in Loris, a son of Danny Joe Hucks and Mary Jane Tindall. He attended Aynor Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Galivants Ferry are three brothers, Troy Tindall and Kenneth Tindall, both of Galivants Ferry, and James Hucks of Conway; one sister Betty Jo Richardson of Conway.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday from Aynor Church of God with the Rev. Jerry Love officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1378 Ralph Road.

Kelly Gates Walker

MYRTLE BEACH -- Kelly Gates Walker, 27, wife of Samuel Walker, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004.

Mrs. Walker was born in Indiana, a daughter of Linda Shaffer and the late Jack Rupert Gates, Sr. She was a member of North Suburban Baptist Church in Indiana.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Georgia, and her husband of Hartsville, are two brothers, Jack Rupert Gates Jr. and Chase Gates, both of Atlanta; three sisters, Veronica Dockery and Tracey Deir, both of Surfside, and Holly Friar of Conway; maternal grandmother Nora Shaffer of Indiana.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, 1506 Gumm Plaza Hwy 501, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
