COLUMBIA — Homegoing services for Robert L. Bacote Sr. will be held at noon Friday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial Monday in Florence National Cemetery. Born in Pamplico to Sylvester and Thelma G. Bacote, he died December 24, 2004. Surviving are wife, Viola R. Bacote; children, Rihoanna, Darrell, Robert Jr., Lashawn, Deon; devoted friend, Sonya Hodges.

Edith Bradley

SALTERS — Services for Edith Burgess Bradley will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Phillip AME Church with burial in Smith-Cooper Cemetery. Friends may call at 114 Memorial Drive, Kingstree. Henryhand Funeral Home, Kingstree, is in charge. Surviving are children, Bishop, Celeste, John, Sam, Leroy, O’Neal Burgess, Eliza Williams; a host of other relatives and friends.

Ava Gardner

BETHUNE — Funeral services for Ava Shaw Gardner, 84, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Larry Brown and Ed Davidson will officiate, with burial in Bethany Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, December 31, 2004, from 4-6 p.m. at the Brown residence, 605 Walton Street, Bethune, SC. Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Gardner, widow of John Jacob Little and Barr H. Gardner, Jr., died Tuesday, December 28, 2004. Born in Bethune, SC, she was a daughter of the late Lucas Payton and Effie Reeves Shaw. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Bethune Woman’s Club, and was an avid bridge player. She was associated with the family-run Bethune IGA.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Barr H. and Kathy W. Gardner, III of Chapin, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Merrill Brown of Bethune, SC; grandchildren, Lee S. Aiken, Michael A. Brown, Barr Harris Gardner, IV. She was preceded in death by her sister Doris Shaw Elliott.

Alonza Bennett Jr.

TRIO — Services for Alonza Murray Bennett Jr., 77, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John AME Church with burial in Bennett Cemetery. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, Kingstree, is in charge. Born in Trio to Alonza Sr. and Belinda E. Bennett, he died Dec. 25, 2004. Surviving are wife, Barbara Bennett; children, Stanley, Dale, Cordelia, Dori, Audrey Bennett, Belinda Smith; 3 sisters; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.

MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. — Services for Gregg Cannon Duke, 54, 1 p.m. today at Morris Funeral Home, Hemingway, S.C.; burial in Union UMC Cemetery. Born in Conway, S.C., to Robert Duke and Helen Duke Woodbury, he died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving: wife, Margie Davis Duke; children, Gregory II, Peyton Duke; brothers, Thomas, William Duke; half brother, Harry Woodbury; stepfather, Harry Woodbury.

Fred Lloyd

HOLLY HILL — Services with burial for Fred Lloyd, 85, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Target AME Church. Eutawville Community Funeral Home, Eutawville, is in charge. Born in Holly Hill to Arthur and Bessie Lloyd, he died December 27, 2004. Surviving are children, Bernette Allen, Lizzie Mae Pitts, Willie Lloyd; 30 grandchildren; great and great-great-grandchildren.

Grace Raines

TRAVELERS REST — Services for Grace Tumblin Raines, 90, widow of Tom Raines, are 3 p.m. Friday (visitation 7-8:30 tonight) at The Howze Mortuary; burial in Grand View Memorial Gardens. Born in Laurens Co. to Benjamin and Bertie Lee Tumblin, she died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving are sons, Stanley, Steve Raines; sisters, Bonnie Griffin, Ruby Batson, Gladys Childs; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; more.

Clyderina Garner

HOPKINS — Services for Clyderina Myers Garner will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, Columbia, with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Born in Barnwell to Clyde and Linda Jones Myers, she died December 24, 2004. Surviving are husband, Hillard Garner II; children, Hillard III, Hillary; father; sisters, Clylinda Nixon, Carlisa, Christie, Colleen Myers.

Edward Niendorf Jr.

GEORGETOWN — A memorial service for Edward Carl Niendorf Jr., 73, are 2 p.m. Sunday at Wayne United Methodist Church. Private burial services will be held at a later date. Graham Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Fayetteville, N.C., to Edward Niendorf Sr. and Eva Niendorf Robertson, he died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving are wife, Catherine A. Niendorf; children, Kenneth Green, Brenda Williams; 3 grandchildren.

Annie Rogers

SUMMERTON — Services with burial for Annie Dow Rogers, 101, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at New Light Missionary Baptist Church. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge. Born in Clarendon Co., she died December 27, 2004. Surviving are children, Leon Rogers, Annie Mae Rogers, Inez Rogers, Frances Glover; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Carolyn Thames

HOUSTON, Texas — Carolyn Fant Thames passed away December 27, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Silverstreet, South Carolina on May 13, 1942, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maffett Fant, Sr.

Mrs. Thames is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elizabeth DuBose Fant.

She is survived by her husband, Chester Allen Thames, Jr.; sister, Edna Earle Fant Dowd; brother-in-law, Rev. H. Wynan Dowd; brother, Thomas Maffett Fant, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Shirley Fant and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Thames was a registered nurse and worked in Atlanta, Ga., and Houston, Texas . In 1990, she returned to school and completed a degree in English and Psychology. She was a gardening and sports enthusiast; especially tennis and basketball. She was a member of Memorial Drive Lutheran Church and was active in the Stephen’s Ministry Program.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday December 29, 2004, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Earthman’s Hunter’s Creek, 8303 Katy Freeway.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday December 30, 2004, at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. A.R. “Sam” Koenning officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005.

ORANGEBURG — Services for Lottie Calloway, 102, widow of George Calloway, 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Grove AME Church, Cope; burial in Heavenly Rest Memorial Park Cemetery, Cordova; visitation 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Simmons Funeral Home. Born to Ed and Essie Priester, she died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving: children, George Bowman, Johnny Calloway, Madine Robinson, Alma Miller; 2 brothers.

Janie Owens

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Janie Caulder Owens, 69, widow of Lloyd Owens, died Tuesday in a Columbia hospital.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway, with visitation 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Owens was born in Olanta, a daughter of Raymond L. and Anna Boyd Welch Caulder. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: Grady (Melinda) Owens of Johnsonville and Larry (Kathy) Joye of Hemingway; her sisters: Betty (Fletcher) McDuffie of Columbia, Martha (Bill) Thomas of Manning, and Valorie (Joe) Burrows of Elgin; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Owens was predeceased by a son, J.W. Owens; grandson, Kirk Owens; brother, Ray Caulder.

Doris Vaughn

TRAVELERS REST — A graveside service for Doris Chambers Vaughn, 77, widow of George Vaughn, is 1 p.m. Friday in Grandview Memorial Gardens; visitation 12-12:45 p.m. prior at The Howze Mortuary. Born in Greenville Co. to William and Ester Moore Chambers, she died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving: son, Ben Vaughn; sister, Frances Vaughn; grandchildren, Gail O’Quinn, Louann Rider; 4 great-grandchildren.

Nina Eaddy

FLORENCE — Services for Nina Ruth Calcutt Eaddy, 75, are 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Baptist Church; burial in Mount Hope Cemetery; visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cain Funeral Home. A dental assistant at Sexton Dental Clinic for 30 years, she died Dec. 27, 2004. Surviving: husband, J. Earl Eaddy; children, Priscilla Edmunds, Angela Poole, Curtis Eaddy; siblings, Morris Calcutt, Wildred Cooper; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.
