Hazel Lillian Johnson Karpinen

WALTERBORO -- Mrs. Hazel Lillian Johnson Karpinen, 77, of 923 Macon Lane, formerly of James Island, died Sunday, June 5, 2005 at Colleton Medical Center.

Mrs. Karpinen was born July 6, 1927 in Conway, SC and was a daughter of the late George Shafter and Lillian Creel Johnson. She was the wife of James J. Karpinen of Walterboro, formerly of James Island, and was a member of High Point Baptist Church of Conway.

Surviving are her husband, James J. Karpinen of Walterboro; daughters, Charlotte A. Collins of Myrtle Beach and Kathy L. Karpinen of Loris; sons, Everette A. Bryant of Trenton, George E. Bryant of Conway, and J. Michael Karpinen of Walterboro; brothers, Clarence M. Johnson of Chesapeake, Va., Donald E. Johnson of Columbia, and Earl Johnson of Galivants Ferry; grandchildren, Yvonne Johnson of Myrtle Beach, Jaime Collins of Myrtle Beach, Melanie Holmes of St. George, Chris Collins of Key West, Fla., Shane Karpinen of Charleston, Chad Bryant of Conway, Clay Bryant of Conway, and John E. Karpinen of Walterboro; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by brothers, George Johnson, and Herbert W. Johnson; sister, Sylvia Slaton Rogers; and granddaughter, Yvette Bryant Fowler.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2005 in The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. Family and friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro. 843-538-5408.

Wilhemenia Long Days Melvin

CONWAY -- Mrs. Wilhemenia Long Days Melvin, 73, died Saturday, June 4, 2005. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ with burial in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation at McKiever Funeral Home Inc. of Conway from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Richard E. Nein Jr.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Richard E. Nein Jr., 62, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at his home.

Born Oct. 11, 1942 in Reading, Pa., he was a son of Alma Reed Nein of Laureldale, Pa. and the late Richard E. Nein Sr.

After serving as house parents for a children's home in Manassas, Va. for 18 months, Richard and his wife, Rita, moved their family to Myrtle Beach in 1984. He was Director of Building and Code Enforcement for the City of Myrtle Beach for several years before starting his own general contracting company RenCo. Richard highly valued his business and dedicated himself to serving his clients wholeheartedly. Many customers became his friends, as did the loving people he met at Grand Strand Church of Christ, where he was also a member.

Besides his mother, survivors include his wife, Rita Sekelic Nein; two sons, Peter Nein and Randy Nein; two grandchildren, Brieana Nein and Christian Nein, all of Myrtle Beach. Richard truly loved his family. Their fondest memories they share are of the special time spent together at Disney World. He also has a brother, Douglas Nein of Reading, Pa. and a sister, June Ringler of N.C.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 8th, at the Grand Strand Church of Christ, Glenns Bay Rd., Surfside. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery, Myrtle Beach. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach.

Memorials may be made to Grand Strand Church of Christ Building Fund, 2212 Glenns Bay Rd., Surfside Beach, SC 29575.

Lillian Newell

LITTLE RIVER -- Lillian Newell died Sunday, June 5, 2005. Arrangements will be announced by Lee Funeral Home & Crematory of Little River/North Myrtle Beach.

Sue Matthews Nobles

MYRTLE BEACH -- Sue Matthews Nobles, 83, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at the Medical University Hospital of S. C.

Mrs. Nobles was born in Andrews on June 19, 1921, a daughter of the late Edward DeLeon Matthews and Sulie Blanch Bryant Matthews. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg County and attended Lander College. Mrs. Nobles lived in Georgetown for thirty-two years and moved to Garden City Beach in 1971 where she was a resident until 1999.

Mrs. Nobles was a charter member of Garden City Baptist Church where she served on the first building committee and a number of other committees of the church. She was a prominent businesswoman for many years and past president and a charter member of the Georgetown Business and Professional Womens Club, and charter member of Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet, Order of the Amarenth, Inc. Mrs. Nobles was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach.

Surviving are: two daughters, Betty Swart and her husband, Allan, of Annapolis, Maryland and Jeanne Rea and her husband, Tom, of Georgetown; two brothers, Edward Deleon Matthews Jr. of Douglasville, Ga. and George D. Matthews of Andrews; one sister, Pansy Guiens of Oak Hill, N.C; a grandson, John Rea and his wife, Lisa; two granddaughters, Erin and her husband, Paul Forbes, and Teri and her husband, Jerimey Holland Sr., all of Georgetown; great-grandchildren, Thomas Rea, Allan Rea, Nicholas, Rea, Connor Forbes, Jerimey Holland Jr., and Dawson Forbes all of Georgetown; a number of nieces and nephews and two wonderful sister-in-laws.

Mrs. Nobles was predeceased by her husband, Deemes Wesley Nick Nobles Jr., two brothers, Winston B. Matthews and Charles E. Matthews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Stephen Williams and the Rev. Bob Taylor. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at 4013 Brock Street in Socastee.

The family suggests memorials to Low Country Community Church, P. O. Box 417, Murrells Inlet, S. C. 29576 or the charity of choice.

MaryAnne J. Nunes

MYRTLE BEACH -- MaryAnne J. Nunes, 62, wife of Ricardo Nunes, died Monday, June 6, 2005. Funeral Arrangements will be announced by McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach.

Jewel Dean McKinney Phillips

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. -- Jewel Dean McKinney Phillips, 83, formerly of Myrtle Beach, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at her home on Fairway Lane as a result of heart failure. She was the daughter of James Boone McKinney and Gertrude Huskins McKinney. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Jack, James Jr., and Buck McKinney.

She is survived by her son, Van, his wife, Sherry, Byron and his wife, Karen, and her daughter, Gina Phillips, all residents of Spruce Pine. Also surviving are two sisters, Joyce Strickler and Shirley JoAnn Buchanan. Her grandchildren are Brandee Mencis, Adrienne, Lindsey, Jennifer, and Dreyson Phillips. She has one great-granddaughter, Bellamy Mencis.

Jewel was a proud homemaker and patron of the arts who attended college at The University of Georgia, Mayland Community College, Francis Marion, and Coastal Carolina, where she majored in Philosophy.

She was of ardent Baptist faith and served as Sunday School Teacher at First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, for several years. Volunteering within her community was a big part of her testimony and she served in leadership positions on many charitable boards. She led the same troop of Girl Scouts for seven years. Ms. Phillips requested that any women affiliated with her troop sit together in a special section at her service.

In 1962, along with her former husband, Jewel co-founded Great Meadows, Inc., a land development company, and in 1986 single-handedly founded GAP Corporation. In 2000 Sam and Jewel again collaborated to form The Samuel L. Phillips Family Foundation for the purpose of making a positive difference in the Tri-Counties. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

A memorial service will be planned at First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine on Wednesday, June 8 at 8 p.m. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church from 7 p.m. until the service hour.

Theron Richardson Pipkin

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Theron Richardson Pipkin, 96, formerly of Georgetown, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, in Commerce, Ga.

Mr. Pipkin was born Nov. 27, 1908 in the Bloomingvale section of Williamsburg County, a son of the late Samuel Richardson Pipkin and Mary Alice Sarvis Pipkin. He spent his early life in Horry County and then moved to Georgetown in 1924. Mr. Pipkin graduated from Winyah High School, class of 1926, and attended the University of South Carolina, class of 1930. He was employed by International Paper Company on June 27, 1937 and retired as Technical Superintendent on December 1, 1973. On September 3, 1939, Mr. Pipkin married Theresa Lee of Georgetown. He served in WWII as an Army staff sergeant May 7, 1942 through October 24, 1945. Mr. Pipkin moved to Commerce, Ga. in January of 1992.

Mr. Pipkin was a member of the Georgetown Historical Society, the Winyah Indigo Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He was a former member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and was currently a member of First United Methodist Church of Commerce, Ga.

Surviving are: his wife, Theresa Lee Pipkin of Commerce, Ga.; a daughter, Theresa P. (Rese) Tiller and her husband, Dr. Joseph A. Tiller of Commerce, Ga.; a granddaughter, Amelia T. Williams and her husband, Richard P. Williams, of James Island; a grandson, Joseph Christopher Tiller of Peachtree City, Ga.; four nieces, Jean Holland of Georgetown, Martha (Pat) Sasser and Jamie Black, both of Conway, and Mary Ann Carlson of Central Point, Ore.; a nephew-in-law, Philip Assey of Columbia; two nieces-in-law, Josephine A. Brunoski of Westport, Conn., and Marguerite Assey of Columbia; several cousins, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2005, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill and the Rev. David Bowen of Commerce, Ga. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday evening, June 8, 2005.

Memorials may be made to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, SC 29440 or First United Methodist Church of Commerce, Ga., 54 Cherry St., Commerce, GA 30529.
