Dr. Franklin Talmadge Buchanan

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Dr. Franklin Talmadge Buchanan, age 84, died June 20, 2005 at The Lakes at Litchfield after an illness.

He was a native of Bristol, Va.-Tenn., son of the late Hubert Keys Buchanan Sr. and Orion Porter Buchanan. Since his retirement, Dr. Buchanan has spent part of his time in the Litchfield-Pawleys Island area and was a permanent resident there at the time of his death.

He graduated from Virginia High School in the class of 1938; received his Bachelor of Science degree and 2nd Lieutenant's commission in 1942 from Virginia Tech. He received his M.D. from the University of Virginia the class of 1945. Following that he interned on the medical staff.

From 1946 to 1948 he served as a captain in the U.S. Army on the plastic surgery service at Valley Forge General Hospital at Phoenixville, Pa. From 1948 to 1953 Dr. Buchanan served as an intern and then as a resident of surgery at The University of Virginia. During this time he worked on the Pathology service and engaged in a research project for the preservation of skin for grafting. For this year he received a Master of Pathology in 1952.

He began practice in Bristol in partnership with Dr. Charles J. Harkradey Jr. in 1953 and later they were joined by Dr. Frank Blanton Jr. in 1959 to form Bristol Surgical Associates. Dr. Buchanan retired in 1981.

Dr. Buchanan was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association, past member of the Virginia and Tennessee Medical Societies, Southeastern Surgical Association. He was a past president of the Virginia Surgical Society, past president of the Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons, past president of the Southwest Virginia Medical Society and a former Chief of Staff of Bristol Memorial Hospital.

While at Virginia Tech he was a member of the German Club, O.D.K. honorary Scabbard and Blade, Defense attorney of the honor court and his senior year was Captain on the regimental staff.

While at The University of Virginia he was a member of the Nu Sigma Nu Medical fraternity, Raven Society, Jefferson Society, Poe Society, and A.O.A. medical honorary fraternity and Sigma Zi honorary medical society.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ann Haas Buchanan; two sons, F. Talmadge Buchanan Jr. of Bonita Springs, Fla. and George Conway Buchanan of Simpsonville; two brothers, H. Keys Buchanan Jr. of Bristol, Tenn. and James Porter Buchanan Sr. of Litchfield Beach; one brother-in-law, H. George Haas Jr. of Venice Fla.; one granddaughter; three grandsons; one step-grandson; two nephews; and five nieces.

Dr. Buchanan was a former member of Litchfield Country Club and Wachesaw Plantation Country Club.

Litchfield-Pawleys Funeral Home is serving the family. Graveside services for family and close friends will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 North Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29440, or to the University of Virginia Medical School Foundation, Class of 1945 Fund, PO Box 80076, H.S. Charlottesville, VA 22908.

William J. Bunce

LORIS -- William J. Bunce, age 59, died Sunday, June 19, 2005. Funeral services will be private. Ward Funeral Home of Loris is serving the family.

James Leo Dyle Jr.

CALABASH, N.C. -- James Leo Doyle Jr., 83, died Friday, June 17, 2005. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9 a.m. in St. Brendan, The Navigator Catholic Church. Burial will follow in North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens, Little River. Brunswick Funeral Service

Estaline Capps Collins Fowler

MULLINS -- Estaline Capps Collins Fowler, 86, died Monday, June 20, 2005 at Marion County Medical Center.

Born June 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Julius Walter and Minnie Viola Snipes Capps.

Mrs. Fowler was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church and was president of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class for several years. In earlier years, she was employed at Barringer's Jewelers and Winkie's Flower Shop. Estaline's greatest legacy was her love of family and dear friends. Her beautiful spirit and countenance will be missed by all.

Estaline was predeceased by her parents, her first husband of 44 years, Kenneth H. Collins and her second husband, Wilton Fowler.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Chuck Mayers of Conway; son, Kenneth H. "Ace" Collins Jr. of Mullins; daughter and son-in-law, Esta and David Parrish of Orlando, Fla. and daughter, Kim Collins of Mullins.

Surviving in addition to her children are two brothers and a sister, Dayton Capps of Myrtle Beach; Loretta C. Collins of Mullins and Don Capps of Columbia.

Other survivors are her grandchildren, Charles C. Mayers, Brad Mayers, Mike Collins, Deanna Bichler, Jay Parrish and Doug Parrish and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m, Thursday, June 23 at the Red Hill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, with Dr. Lewis McCormick officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the mausoleum.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Bessie Heyward

GEORGETOWN -- Bessie Heyward, 52, died Friday, June 17, 2005. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gospel Missionary Baptist Church with burial following. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6 to 7 p.m., at McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home.

Jacquelyn Todd Horne

MYRTLE BEACH -- Jacquelyn Todd Horne, age 75, of Perriwinkle Place died Sunday, June 19, 2005 at Mariner Health Care East in Sumter.

Born Aug. 5, 1929 in Horry County, she was the daughter of the late Farley and Palma Cox Todd. Mrs. Horne had retired as office manager from Southern Office Supply Co. in Hartsville. For the past twenty two years, Mrs. Horne resided in Myrtle Beach and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Horne Jr. in 1987, son, Larry E. Horne and sister, Geraldine Gore.

Surviving are son, Doug Horne and wife Kathryn of Sumter; brother, W.R. Todd and wife, Mary, of Loris and Philip Todd of Mullins; sister, Gussie Ann Cox and husband Aubry of Coward; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Margaret Virginia Klemme

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Margaret Virginia Klemme, age 78, of Litchfield Plantation, died Monday, June 20, 2005 at her home following a long illness with kidney cancer.

Born March 1, 1927 in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence M. Allen Lyons. She received her B.A. degree in 1949 from Tufts University and her Master of Library Science from Simmons College in 1950. Notable career positions were Reference Librarian and member of the faculty at the Harvard Business School, Assistant Librarian at New York University Graduate School of Business and Vice President Corporate Finance in the Wall Street Firm of Drexel Burnham Lambert where she retired in 1990.

Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Klemme; cousins, Francis Doyle of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., Dr. Timothy OConnell and Brendan OConnell, both of Cork, Ireland and Catherine Lyons McKenzie-Smith of Dorset, England.

Services will be private.

Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge.

James Mastromichalis

GEORGETOWN -- James Mastromichalis, 81, died Monday, June 20, 2005. Arrangements will be announced by the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.

Virginia Floyd Powell

MANNING -- Virginia Floyd Powell, age 79, wife of the late Lonzie Powell, died Sunday, June 19, 2005 at her son's home in Manning, S.C.

Mrs. Powell was born in Conway, a daughter of the late Francis Marvin and Minnie Vaught Floyd. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Conway. She was dedicated to God's glory and active in her church, and demonstrated that love by her faithfulness in His service. She served on many church committees, taught Sunday school and served as Church Hostess for many years. Mrs Powell had a deep concern for shut-ins within her community and served on the Caregivers Committee. In addition, she was Bereavement Chairperson for the church for many years. She was a member of the Family Fellowship Class and the Bessie Henry Circle.

Mrs. Powell was a 1942 graduate of Conway High School and attended Winthrop College where she received her B.A. degree, and received a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina. She was an elementary school teacher in the Conway City School System for 32 years, retiring in 1980. Her only daughter, Lannis Powell Jordan passed away in December 2002.

Surviving are one son Bruce Powell and his wife, Jane, of Manning, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jenny Williams of Bradenton, Fla., Natalie Cooper of Conway, Collin Powell and Caroline Powell of Manning; two great-grandsons Furman and Lance Cooper of Conway; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Sarvis of North Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Annie Lou Spivey of Conway and Mrs. Mary Alice Cox of Camden.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday from the First United Methodist Church of Conway with the Rev. Carl Harris and the Rev. Ben Barnett officiating. Burial will be private, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

TABOR CITY, N.C. -- Kenneth Ray Ward, age 54, died Sunday, June 19, 2005. The family will have a private service. A service of Inman Funeral Home.
