Margaret Scalf

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Moffatt Bagley Scalf, 95, of 1036 Ebenezer Road died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at her home.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First ARP Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.
Born in York County, Mrs. Scalf was the former vice president of Home Federal Savings and Loan, where she was employed for 44 years. She was an active member of First ARP Church, a member of the UDC and a member of the Altrusa Club. She also worked at the Winthrop College Credit Union and volunteered at York General Hospital. She was the widow of C.W. Scalf.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to First ARP Church.

Mencie Smith

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mencie Parker Reeder Smith, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church.
Born in Rock Hill, Mrs. Smith was educated in the public schools of Rock Hill and studied at Friendship Junior College, North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., and received a bachelor's degree in religious education from Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. She was a substitute teacher in Baltimore and played the piano.
Surviving are two sons, Brooks Smith Jr. of Baltimore and John Thomas Smith of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, James T. Reeder of Burgess, Va., and Robert Reeder of Rock Hill; three sisters, Louise Hoover and Alberta Allen, both of Salisbury, N.C., and Johnnie Mae Wiley of Baltimore; and her grandson.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church and at other times at the home of Robert Reeder, 626 Center St.
The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Clemons Funeral Home is in charge.

James Stroud

ROCK HILL - Mr. James D. "Buck" Stroud, 63, of 1264 Neely's Creek Road died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home.

Jeannie Mae Twitty

KERSHAW - Mrs. Jeannie Mae Pate Twitty, 56, of 6372 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Hammond officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.
Born in Kershaw, Mrs. Twitty was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, David Leroy Twitty; her son, Jeff G. Twitty of Kershaw; five daughters, Janiet Warfield of Columbia, Melinda Kay Twitty of Puerto Rico, Mechelle Hinson and Nora Twitty, both of Heath Springs, and Crystal Twitty of Kershaw; her mother, Ethel Twitty Pate of Kershaw; three brothers, Carl T. Pate of Kershaw, Jerry Pate of Lancaster and D. Wayne Pate of Bethune; and 15 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Janie Weaver

SIMPSONVILLE - Mrs. Janie Mishow Weaver, 94, of Briarwood Nursing Center, formerly of Eastwood Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Hillcrest Hospital.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt and J.C. Neeley officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.
A Rock Hill native, Mrs. Weaver was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was retired from J.P. Stevens, where she worked as a spinner. She was the widow of William H. Weaver Sr.
Surviving are her son, William Weaver Jr. of Anderson; her daughter, Dorothy R. Ashley of Mauldin; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home.

Glenn Alexander
ROCK HILL - Mr. Glenn W. Alexander, 80, of 1161 Candlelight Drive died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Gaston Memorial Park.
Born in Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Alexander was the owner and operator of Glenn Alexander's Wines and Liquors and was formerly employed by American Thread Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Lynch Alexander; his brother, Paul Alexander of Gastonia, N.C.; and his grandson, John Benjamin "Bert" Ferguson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Florie Brice

CHESTER - Ms. Florie Brice, 73, of Chester County Nursing Center, formerly of 123 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at the nursing center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasantview AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Howard Jones officiating and the Rev. George Rhodes assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A Chester native, Ms. Brice was a retired laundry worker. She was a member of Pleasantview AME Zion Church, a member of the usher board and the Helping Hand Club. She attended the schools of Chester County.
Surviving are three daughters, Lorraine Kirkpatrick of Roswell, Ga., and Mamie Brice and Dorothy Johnson, both of Chester; two brothers, Richard Young of Chester and Arthur Brice of Sumerset, N.J.; seven sisters, Mary J. McCullough, Alberta McCullough, Geneva Morris and Lacy Barnes, all of Chester, Janie Crawley, Gertrude Davis and Rosie Brice, all of Newark, N.J.; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Patricia Deas

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Patricia Phillips Deas, 57, of 522 Liberty St. died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews, N.C.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Hubert Faulkenberry officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A Rock Hill native, Mrs. Deas was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and retired from the Conoco Petroleum Company.
Surviving are her husband, Wesley "Albert" Deas Jr. of the home; her son, Wes A. Deas III of the home; two daughters, Tina D. Blake and Leslie D. Austin, both of Rock Hill; her brother, Roy "Gene" Phillips of Rock Hill; two sisters, Carol Gordon and Dyane "Butchie" Phillips, both of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Sara Devore

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sara Sturgis Devore, 87, of 1330 India Hook Road died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Shelton Sanford III and Dr. Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
Born in Rock Hill, Mrs. Devore worked for Bass Funeral Home as a secretary. She also worked for Interiors Ltd. from 1969 to 1982. She was a member of Eastern Star, The Garden Club and The Altrusa Club. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was on many committees. She was the widow of Robert Eugene Devore.
Surviving are her sister, Doris Patton of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the home of Doris Patton, 1240 Westover Circle.
Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church's general fund.

Leonard Jones Sr.

YORK - Mr. Leonard Ross Jones Sr., 55, of 1705 Davis Farm Road died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Correll officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
A York County native, Mr. Jones was operations director at Town & Country Toyota in Charlotte. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean Husky Jones of the home; two sons, Leonard R. Jones Jr. and Sam "Spike" Myers, both of York; two daughters, Melanie Lynn Jones Myers and Sheri Annette Jones, both of York; his brother, Edward L. Jones of York; and his grandchild.

James Nelson

MCCONNELLS - Mr. James Edward Nelson, 84, of 6290 McConnells Highway died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Olivet Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Sam Hoyt officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Born in Swain County, N.C., Mr. Nelson was a member of the White Street Baptist Church. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a former member of the Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Viola Coker Nelson; his son, John Nelson of McConnells; two daughters, Anita Nelson Floyd of Fort Mill and Jimmie Nelson Quinn of Gulfsport, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.

George Peterson

CHESTER - Mr. George Peterson, 55, of 590 Belt Line Road died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Black Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ricky Daniels officiating and the Rev. Wilson assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A Chester native, Mr. Peterson was a member of Black Rock Baptist Church hymn choir and gospel choir. He was a member of the AP&B Society. He was educated in Chester County public schools. He was formerly employed at Duke Power.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Peterson of Spartanburg; his daughter, Anngeanett Lightner of Spartanburg; his brother, Willie Peterson of Vaxhall, N.J.; three sisters, Hattie P. Gray, and Shirley P. Caldwell, both of Chester, and Bernice P. Blair of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and his special friend, Rosalind Terry of Chester.
The family is at the home of Mrs. Hattie P. Gray, 119 Elizabeth St.
The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. today.

Born in Green Sea, Mr. Stroud was a retired carpenter and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Veta Tyler Stroud of the home; two daughters, Janet M. Carter of York, and Pamela G. Dawkins of Rock Hill; his mother, Thelma Pridgen Carroll of Rock Hill; four brothers, John Elbert Stroud, Daustin Stroud and Stanford L. Stroud, all of Rock Hill, and Austin McCoy Stroud of China Grove, N.C.; four sisters, Viola Jernigan and Colleen Griffin, both of Rock Hill, Louise Turbeville of Pinewood and Ellie Whitner of Hickory, N.C.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
