U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
Harley Scott
Retired Winthrop University professor Harley Scott, 78, chairman of the school's psychology department for nearly 20 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his home.
A memorial service will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Hall at Winthrop University.
Scott moved to Rock Hill in 1953 to take the psychology department chairman's post at what was then Winthrop College.
Born in Kannapolis, N.C., he graduated from Duke University in 1942. He served four years in the Army during World War II and finished as a captain. He received his doctorate in psychology from Duke in 1953.
He was chairman of the department for 19 years, and his duties included teaching classes part-time. He decided to resign from his position as chairman and return to full-time teaching in 1972. He taught until his retirement in 1983.
Rondo Laffitte, professor emeritus at Winthrop University, came to the school when the psychology department consisted of only the chairman and another professor. Laffitte credits Scott with the large size of the psychology department now.
"Scott was chairman longer than any other person. He was responsible for growth and interest at Winthrop in the field of psychology," Laffitte said.
After retiring, Scott continued to be involved in the community. He did psychological evaluation for disabilities determination for the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, the Rock Hill Human Relations Council, the York County Mental Health Association, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross and the Museum of York County. He was past president of the Piedmont Archaeological Society.
He was past president of the South Carolina Psychological Association and was on the licensing board many years. He also was on the National Science Foundation board and the American Psychological Association board.
Laffitte said that Scott was devoted to the professional organizations in which he was involved, but he believed teaching was the most important thing one could do.
"He probably sent more students on to graduate school for masters and doctorate degrees than could be expected from one professor," he said.
Surviving are Scott's wife, Carol Seeley Scott; three sons, Mike Scott of Roswell, Ga., and David Scott and John Scott of Rock Hill; two daughters, Elisabeth Scott of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Sally Mintz of Fort Mill; his brother, Sam Scott of Asheville, N.C.; two sisters, K.
