Cora Poovey
LANCASTER - Mrs. Cora Elizabeth Poovey, 86, of 2834 Charlotte Highway died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.
The graveside funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Wayne Dickson officiating.
Born in Van Wyck, Mrs. Poovey had worked for Springs Industries.
She was the widow of Herman Marcellous Poovey.
Surviving are her sister, Wincie Oleeta Spray of Charlotte; her granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leola Wilkes
CAMDEN - Mrs. Leola Tigler Wilkes, 84, of 1711 Woodside Drive, formerly of Chester, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Kershaw County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester County, with the Rev. Curtis Washington officiating. The Rev. J.G. Jones will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkes was a member of the Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess and a member of the Sunday school class. She also was a member of Brightlight Chapter Order of Eastern Star #146 and a member of AP&B Society #17. She was a former member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in York County. She also was a homemaker.
She was the widow of John E. Wilkes.
Surviving are her son, James Hames of Hyattsville, Md.; three daughters, Shirley Harp of Camden, Fanetta Mitchell of Dayton, Ohio, and Lois Gray of Jamaica, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
There will be Eastern Star Rites at Kings Funeral Home at 6 p.m. today and at other times at 3298 Pilgrim Road in Chester. The body will be carried to the church at 1 p.m. Monday.

Hazel Beckham
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Hazel Grigg Beckham, 74, of 165 Westerwood Drive died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew B. Horne officiating. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Beckham was a homemaker and a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Don Beckham.
Surviving are her son, Robert D. Beckham of Rock Hill; two daughters, Brenda Irene Beckham of Rock Hill and Barbara Ann Beckham of Newberry; two brothers, Walter Grigg of Lawndale, N.C., and T. B. Grigg of Falston, N.C.; her sister, Ann Willis of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Covenant Presbyterian Church organ fund, 1830 Celanese Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Lionel Bernard Sr.
ROCK HILL - Mr. Lionel Paul "Frenchy" Bernard Sr., 79, of 910 S. Confederate Ave. died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998.
A funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.
Mr. Bernard was a Broussard, La., native. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Guadalcanal, South Pacific, and fought at the Battle of Pearl Harbor. He was active in St. Anne Parish school and church. He also was president of St. Anne Mens Club and president of the PTA. He was an usher for 36 years.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret "Jackie" Horne Bernard; three sons, Lionel "Butch" Bernard Jr. of Rock Hill, Lanny Bernard of Fort Mill, and Keith Bernard of Charlotte; his daughter, Bonnie Hyde of Brandon, Fla.; his brother, Alexis Bernard of Broussard, La.; his sister, Maydel B. DuBois of Broussard; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 7 tonight at Bass Funeral Home. The family will receive friends afterward, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

George Brandt Jr.
YORK - Mr. George Brandt Jr., 77, of 2125 Brandt Road died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, with the Revs. Dr. Charlie Foss, Dr. Joe Mills and Al Bolland officiating.
Mr. Brandt was a Greensboro, N.C., native. He was a 1942 graduate of North Carolina State University, and an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, where he was a pilot in the Air Transport Command. He retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. in 1985, and was on the boards of the Red Cross, Rock Hill United Way and the former York General Hospital. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, where he served as vestryman and junior warden.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia, Taylor Brandt; two sons, Lee Brandt of Darien, Ga., and George Brandt III of Spartanburg; his daughter, Marcia Brandt of Charleston; and seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to York Place Episcopal Children's Home, 234 Kings Mountain St., York, SC 29745.
Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Sylvia Crosby
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mrs. Sylvia Strothers Crosby, 89, of Brooklyn. N.Y., formerly of Halseville Road in Chester, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at SSI Nursing Home in Brooklyn.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Upper Hope Station Baptist Church in Fairfield County, with the Rev. James Coleman officiating and the Rev. T.G. Greene delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Mrs. Crosby was born in Fairfield County and was the widow of Ervin Crosby. She was a member of Upper Hope Station Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member and was mother of the church. She was a choir member, missionary, and a former usher and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Silver Hill Order of Eastern Star No. 244 and of AP&B Society No. 31. While residing in Brooklyn, she attended St. Luke Community Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Annie C. Maye of Brooklyn; her brother, Simelton Strothers of Baltimore; three sisters, Louise Young of Baltimore, Wilhemia Roseborough of Fairfield, N.C., and Lillie A. Mayfield of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at King's Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ruby Chisholm, 172 Jeter St., Chester.
The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Alice Ledbetter
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Alice Jarrell Ledbetter, 92, of 1611 Constitution Blvd., formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Summit Place.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, with Dr. Donald Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn West in Charlotte.
Mrs. Ledbetter was a Greenville, Ga., native. She had been a resident of Charlotte since 1928, and moved to Rock Hill four years ago. She was a charter member of Myers Park Baptist Church and an active member of the Myers Park Country Club. She was the widow of George H. Ledbetter.
Surviving are her son, Dr. G. Ronald Ledbetter of Charlotte; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Myers Park Baptist Church, 1931 Selwyn Ave., Charlotte, NC 28207.

Eula Mae Paul
LANCASTER - Mrs. Eula Mae Small Paul, 75, of 1324 Springdale Road died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church, with Revs. Curtis Cameron and Ansel Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.
Mrs. Paul was a Lancaster native. She was a homemaker and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Paul; her son, Ronnie Mitchell Smith of Lancaster; three daughters, Vickia Jolly of Chester, Amanda Channell of Blackstock and Marilyn Rice of Forest City, N.C.; five brothers, Ansel Small of Fort Lawn, David Small of Chester, Charles Small of Hartsville, and Loyd Small and Tommy Small both of Lancaster; four sisters, Ann Woodel of Chester, Vone Blackmon of Pageland, and Gladys Pierce and Alma Hurst, both of Catawba; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 1324 Springdale Road.

Gaylord Roberts
KERSHAW - Mr. Gaylord Roberts, 52, of 3679 Lockhart Road died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Providence Baptist Church, with the Revs. Hilton Batts and Homer Hinson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Roberts was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and worked at Cal Maine Foods Inc. of Bethune.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Thompson Roberts; two sons, Gary Travis Roberts and Paul Mitchum Roberts, both of Kershaw; his daughter, Martha Self of Bethune; two brothers, Willie Frank Roberts of Lancaster and Paul T. Roberts of Heath Springs; six sisters, Willie Mae Deese of Great Falls, Cleo Holden of Heath Springs, Eloise Robinson of Cassatt, Rosie Timmons of Fort Lawn, Peggy Ray Austin of Lancaster and Evelyn R. McManus of Fort Mill; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Linnie Sumner
FORT MILL - Mrs. Linnie B. Smith Sumner, 83, of 418 Keystone Circle in Fort Mill died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Jim McGill, Gene Flack and Bill King officiating. Burial will follow at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Sumner was a Madison County, Ala., native. She was a homemaker and longtime member of Riverview Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Carl Smith and Furman Sumner.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Smith and Larry Smith, both of Fort Mill; two brothers, Woodrow Berryman and Clay Berryman, both of Huntsville, Ala.; her twin sister, Minnie Anders of Falkville, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Riverview Presbyterian Church.

James Vail
HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. James Vail, 71, of 4343 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Glen Carter and Hershel Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Vail was a Lamar County, Ala., native. He was a World War II veteran, a retired engineer for Columbus and Greenville Railway, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and a former member of Springhill Baptist Church in Millport, Ala., where he was a deacon for 49 years.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Wharton Vail of Heath Springs; his son, Mike W. Vail of Heath Springs, his daughter, Cheryl Lynne Delameter of Bishopville; two brothers, Billy Vail of Startsville, Miss., and Bobby Vail of Millport, Ala.; his sister, Wilda Dawkins of Millport, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Kathryn Willis
LANCASTER - Mrs. Kathryn Starnes Willis, 61, of 2337 Watts Drive died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Second Baptist Church, with the Revs. James D. Spencer III and Tom Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.
Mrs. Willis was a Pageland native. She was a homemaker, and a member of Second Baptist Church and its Belton Harris Circle and Praise Bible Class.
Surviving are her husband, Bobby James Willis; two sons, Phillip D. Thompson and Steve W. Thompson, both of Lancaster; two stepsons, Robert James Willis and Shane Willis, both of Indian Trail; her father, Guy C. Starnes and her stepmother, Chris Starnes, both of Heath Springs; four sisters, Margaret Lynn of Greer, Nancy Lowery of Pageland, Dorothy Mills of Pageland, and Sylvia Brunson of Hampton; two grandchildren; her great-grandchild; and five step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
