Nell Woodruff

GREER — A memorial service for Nell Fitts Smith Woodruff, 93, widow of Glenn Smith and Walter Woodruff, will be held at a later date. Mrs. Woodruff died December 22, 2004. Her body was donated to the Medical University of S.C. She was an active volunteer with the Spartanburg Mental Health Association. Surviving are nieces, Evamay Ward and Ann Burnett. She was predeceased by son, Glenn Smith Jr.

Leroy Williams Sr.

CAMDEN — Leroy C. Williams, Sr., 89, of 718-C Cross Lane, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 26, 2004, at his home. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2004, with Dr. Timothy J. Bowman officiating, with burial in church cemetery. Casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Brown’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Williams was born in Camden, SC, son of the late Hammie and Hannah Boyd Williams. He was married to the late Bessie Cantey Williams. He was a retired chef cook.

Surviving are sons and daughter-in-law, Leroy, Jr. and Elouise Williams of Norwalk, CT, Clarence Williams of Norwalk, CT, and Howard “Tim” Williams of Camden, SC; daughters and son-in-law, Mary “Bea” and Christine Williams, Sharon and Ralph Kelly, all of Camden, SC; brother, Moses Williams of Camden, SC; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family appreciates the concern and care given by the staff of Kershaw County Medical Center and Home Health Service and Dr. F.N. McCorkle.

Memorial may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 511 Knights Hill Road, Camden, SC 29020 or the charity of one’s choice.

Pastell Goodwin

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Pastell Taylor Goodwin, of West Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2004, at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Paul Aebischer, Rev. Virginia S. Aebischer, and Mr. Art Wuertz, with burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tracy Davis, J.D. Williams, Jimmy Allen Jackson, John Lybrand, Jason Taylor and Graham Ready. The family will receive friends from 12 noon-2 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia and also from 4-6 p.m. at her home located at 3640 Augusta Road, West Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Goodwin, widow of Gary Addison Goodwin, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004. Born in West Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Flordie Stockman Taylor. Mrs. Goodwin was a lifetime resident and a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a number of nieces, nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Goodwin was predeceased by a son, William Billy Taylor; a sister, Doris Taylor; and three brothers, Roosevelt Taylor, Daniel Leo Taylor and Ivory Taylor.

Howard Tadlock Sr.

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Howard William Tadlock Sr., 82, widower of Juanita Dudley Tadlock, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home, burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation is 6-9 tonight at the residence, 102 S. Everett St. Born in Monroe, N.C., to Bud and Susan Deese Tadlock, he died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: children, William Tadlock Jr., Vanessa Coddington; 2 grandchildren.

Jacob Wallace

RIDGEWAY — Services for Jacob “Jake” Wallace, 56, are 1 p.m. Friday at Carroll Mortuary, Denmark Chapel; cremation will follow. Born in Allendale to Jacob Sr. and Alnora Wallace, he died Dec. 25, 2004. Surviving: wife, Barbara Robinson Wallace; sons, Kenny, Keith and Kendrick Wallace; sisters, Mary Outing, Gloria Johnson, twin, Mary Wallace, Patricia Mitchell, Louise Wallace; brother, Elijah Wallace.

Eva Rogers

LAKE VIEW — Services for Eva Muriel Smith Rogers, 72, are 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Lake View, burial in Lake View Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cook Funeral Home. Born in Robeson Co. to Resser and Etha Leggett Smith, she died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: husband, J.D. Rogers; daughters, Donna Cox, Sue Reeves; siblings, Paul Smith, Judy Lee; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Edward Smart

FAIRFAX — Services with burial for Edward Smart, 76, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Jackson Branch Baptist Church, Brunson, where he was a member. Wake is 7-8 tonight at Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton. Born to Trottie Sr. and Rebecca Carter Smart, he died Dec. 23, 2004. Surviving: children, Patricia Wright, Elnora Eady, Anthony Ogletree; siblings, Ida and Trottie Jr. Smart; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

Cleo Robinson

CHESTER — Services with burial for Cleo Lowry Robinson, 90, widow of Henry Robinson, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Uriel Presbyterian Church, visitation following. Barron Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Morven, N.C., to Robert and Bertha Holt Lowry, she died Dec. 27, 2004. Surviving: children, Jill Ligon, Rachel Crawford, Margaret Whiteside, Dr. Tom and Hal Robinson; sister, Etta Eatman; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Louise Whitworth

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Funeral services for Mattie Louise Covington Whitworth, 98, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2004, at Hickory Chapel, Woodbine Funeral Home, 5852 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211, with burial to follow in Buchanan Burial Grounds, Donelson, TN. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Dave, Butch, Brady, Al, Troy and Jeff Whitworth. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons at Woodson Chapel, friends from Oglesby Community Club and Friends from Oglesby F.C.E. Club. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 30, 2004, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Whitworth died Wednesday, December 29, 2004. Louise Covington Whitworth was a great Christian lady. She was a servant in the truest sense of the word. She was born on August 10, 1906, to Elnora (Ella) and James (Jim) Covington in West Nashville, TN. She was named Mattie Louise Covington, but was always called Louise. She grew up in the Nashville area. She married David Stevenson Whitworth in 1935 and lived in Donelson, TN, Columbia, SC, and Nashville, TN. They were happily married for 60 years. She attended Central High School and Peabody College in Nashville, TN, and taught school in Davidson County, before she married and worked as a bookkeeper for Neil Parts Rebuilders, Inc., after she reared her children. She and her family attended Shannon Church of Christ in Columbia, SC, and at Woodson Chapel Church of Christ in Nashville, TN.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, David Covington and Jerry H. Whitworth, James Edward and Betty D. Whitworth and William Alvin and Beverly C. Whitworth; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; half-sisters, Beverly Covington, Mary Ella Bastian, Novella Smith and June Caldwell; and half-brothers, Thomas Covington and Dan Covington. Mrs. Whitworth was preceded in death by a daughter, Elnora Isabelle Whitworth; and 3 brothers, James Emory Covington, Clifford Debois Covington and William Howard Covington.

Willard Miles

KINGSTREE — Mr. Willard Laverne Miles, 79, died Wednesday in a Florence hospital.

Mr. Miles was born in Florence County, a son of Lennie Poston Miles and Cleland Miles. He attended Florence County schools. Mr. Miles was a retired businessman. He was the former owner of W.L. Miles Grocery and was a farmer. He was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, the Faulkner Sunday School Class, and Baptist Brotherhood. Mr. Miles was an Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Masons. He was an accomplished musician and was a member of the Southeastern Bluegrass Association.

Survivors: his wife, Ina Smith Miles of Cades; 1 son, Alton L. Miles of Cades; 1 daughter, Judith Watford of Florence; 4 brothers, C.L. Miles of Lake City, James Miles and Kenneth Miles of Scranton, and J.W. Miles of Avondale, Arizona; 1 sister, Doris Duke of Scranton; 8 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in Smith Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests that memorials be made to the Kingstree First Baptist Church, or to the Smith Cemetery Fund.

Matilda Brown

EUTAWVILLE — Services for Matilda Brown, 76, will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. James Baptist Church, burial in Heyden Hill Cemetery. Eutawville Community Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Eutawville to Lizzie Bryant and Marion Elmore, she died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving: children, Patricia, Gloria, Rosa, Caroline, Henry, Micheal and James Brown; five sisters; aunt; 2 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; other relatives.

Margaret Brown

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Margaret Lindsay Brown age 88, who died Dec. 28, will be held Thursday at 2:00 from the Hebron United Methodist Church. Rev. Jacky Raper will officiate. Burial will be in the Hebron Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be following the Service.

Mrs. Brown was born in Greer a daughter of the late Elford & Louvennia Odom Lindsay. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Surviving are:

3 Daughters: Linda (Eloit) Johnson, Anderson

Peggy (Harry) Jones, Florence

Neva (Brooks) Lawson, Darlington

1 Son: Rev. Larry (Jean) Brown, Rockingham, N.C.
