Irma Hicklin

RICHBURG - Mrs. Irma Pressley Hicklin, 96, of East Lancaster Street in Richburg died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Union Cemetery in Richburg, with the Rev. Fant Steele officiating.

Mrs. Hicklin was a Chester native. She was retired from the Lewisville High School cafeteria, and was a member of Richburg Presbyterian Church. She attended Chester County Schools and graduated from Linwood College.

Surviving are her daughter, Jean H. Nichols of Richburg; and her sister, Lucille P. Myrick of Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the Richburg Fire Department, P.O. Box 64, Richburg, SC 29729.

Gertrude Hurst

CLOVER - Mrs. Gertrude Childers Hurst, 79, of 101 Stonegate Drive died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. David Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Hurst was a member of Clover First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and was retired from Homelite in Gastonia, N.C. She was the widow of Willis Derrick Hurst Sr.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight at the home of Will and Lazette Hurst, 205 Kings Mountain St. in Clover.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church expansion fund, 117 S. Main St., Clover, SC 29710; Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730; or Clover Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 214, Clover, SC 29710.

Bobby Kelly Sr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Bobby Barton Kelly Sr., 71, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today at Carothers Funeral Home Colonial Chapel in Gastonia, N.C., with the Rev. Dan King officiating. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

Mr. Kelly was a Mecklenburg County native, and lived most of his young adult life in Gastonia and Lancaster. He was an Army veteran, serving in the 33rd Battalion I&R Intelligence during World War II. He spent two years in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Plantation Pipeline Co. after 32 years, and was a longtime member of Thomasboro Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Irene S. Kelly, two sons, Bobby B. Kelly Jr. of Cornelius, N.C., and Michael S. Kelly of Stanley, N.C.; his brother, Harold B. Kelly, of Gastonia; his sister, Doris K. Quinn of Gastonia; and three grandchildren.

Evelyn King

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mrs. Evelyn Foote King, 49, of 2422 4th St. NE, formerly of Chester, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Washington, D.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Isle of Patrick Church in Washington, D.C. Burial will follow.

Surviving are two sons, Antonio King and Christopher King, both of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Vashone Wisnbush of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Rosa Mae Hudson and Loretta Brown, both of Washington, D.C., and Phyllis Corprew of Charlotte; three brothers, Lester Foote, Sylvester Foote and Mitchell Foote, all of Washington, D.C.

The family will receive friends from 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall Funeral Home, 4217 9th St. NW, Washington, D.C.

King's Funeral Home in Chester is in charge of local arrangements.

Sara Macdonald

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sara Benn Macdonald, 91, of 325 College Ave. died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. Burial will be 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Old Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Woodward. A requiem will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour.

Mrs. Macdonald was a graduate of Chicora College. She later received a master of arts degree from Winthrop. She taught music in Columbia, where she also was contralto soloist at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for several years.

She was a former member of the Junior League and a charter member of the Rock Hill Music Club. She was also a member of the Book Review Club, the Little Garden Club, the Catawba Chapter of the DAR and the Winthrop Alumni Club. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was a choir director for 34 years and was one of the first musicians to perform Handel's "Messiah" each Christmas. She also attended the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour. She was the widow of Dr. Roderick Macdonald, a long-time Rock Hill physician.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Roderick MacDonald Jr. of Columbia; three daughters, Rose Macdonald of Williamsburg, Va., Mary Macdonald of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dr. Martha Macdonald of the home; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to the music funds of the Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730, or The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 144 Oakland Caldwell St., Rock Hill, SC 29730; or to the York County Council on Aging, 150 Johnston St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Kathleen Simpson

LANCASTER - Mrs. Ethel Kathleen Adams Simpson, 88, of 2010 Cane Mill Road died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at her home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Simpson was a member of First A.R.P. Church and its Jones Robinson Circle. She was the retired co-owner and operator of the Midway Variety Store.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts at First A.R.P. Church, P.O. Box 684, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Harry Woodle

CHESTER - Mr. Harry Adam Woodle, 76, of 2153 Hardin Strait Road died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Rock Hill Church of Christ, with Kenneth Forrest officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Woodle was a Chester County native. He was a former co-owner of Harry & Ann's Store, a member of Rock Hill Church of Christ, and an Army veteran of World War II. He attended school in Chester County.

Surviving are his wife, Annie S. Woodle; three daughters, Pat Bolden of Lake Hartwell, Sandra Wylie of Chester, and Ashley Rollins of the home; two sisters, Sinnie Mae Roddey of Fort Lawn and Irene Nelson of Chester; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Barron Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret Bass

Mrs. Margaret "Kit" Thompson Bass, 90, wife of the late J. Anderson Bass Sr., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Conway Nursing Center following an illness.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home with the Revs. Dr. Robert Shrum and Harold Coleman officiating. Burial will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Born in Camden, she was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and primarily a homemaker. During World War II, when recruiting employees was difficult, she would fill in at her husband's Bass Funeral Home as a greeter.

Bass Funeral Home was started by the father of J. Anderson Bass Sr. as J.E. Bass and Sons Furniture and included a funeral parlor. The business was eventually divided between J. Anderson Bass Sr. and his brother; J. Anderson Bass handled the funeral parlor and his brother handled the furniture store.

Mrs. Bass enjoyed handwork, such as sewing and needlepoint, in her spare time.

Native Rock Hill residents may remember a Christmas tradition at Bass Funeral Home, in which a small church structure was placed in the front yard. A conveyor belt full of small figures would rotate in and out of the church. The figures were decorated in different costumes, like angels or soldiers, all hand-made by Mrs. Bass.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. J. Anderson Bass Jr.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home.

Bessie Bolin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Bessie "Bobo" Bolin, 79, of 728 Cauthen St. died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Laurelwood Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt officiating.

Born in Hartsville, Mrs. Bolin was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing where she worked in the packing department for more than 23 years. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, C.L. McCoy of Columbia and Jimmy Bolin of Rock Hill; two daughters, Nellie McCammon of Rock Hill and Lois A. Bolin-Vatis of Naples, Fla.; her brother, Jessie Lee Massey of Richburg; her sister, Mary Brunson of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Lola Drennan

CLOVER - Mrs. Lola Edna Grissom Drennan, 97, of 1200 S.C. Highway 55 East died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David C. Inman officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Gaston County, N.C., Mrs. Drennan was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for more than 75 years and was an organizing member of the United Methodist Women. She was the widow of Paul W. Drennan Sr.

Surviving are her son, P.W. Drennan Jr. of Clover; her daughter, Delores D. Rector of Rock Hill; her sister, Dorothy G. Carson of Clover; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Freda Fisher

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Freda Tolley Fisher, 70, of 2323 Mount Gallant Road died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at her home.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Glenn Burriss officiating.

A Pageton, W.Va., native, Mrs. Fisher was a member of Four Square Pentecostal Church and was retired from Hoechst Celanese Corp. after 26 years.

Surviving are her husband, Lawrence N. Fisher of the home; her son, Larry N. Fisher of Rock Hill; her daughter, Teresa D. Fisher of Rock Hill; three sisters, Mildred Bean of Waiteville, W.Va., Nora Shelburne of Norfolk, Va., and Dorothy Fetzner of Erie, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Larry Fisher, 1920 Williford Woods Lane.

Louise Hagins

LANCASTER - Mrs. Louise Cox Hagins, 93, of 400 N. White St. died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Morgan officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Monroe, N.C., Mrs. Hagins was a member of First United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Odell B. Hagins; her son, Ben Hagins of Seneca; her daughter, Carolyn Montgomery of Rock Hill; her brother, Jesse Cox of Wilmington, N.C.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home.
