Margaret Johnson

CHESTER - Mrs. Margaret Strong Johnson, 73, of Chester County Nursing Center, formerly of 106 Steward St., died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Darby officiating and the Rev. R. L. McClurkin delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Born in Chester County, Mrs. Johnson was a retired domestic worker, a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and was educated in Chester County public schools. She was the widow of Alexander Johnson.

Surviving are her son, Theodore A. Johnson of Chester; three daughters, Deloris Mayfield, Adell Kee and Arlene Johnson, all of Chester; two brothers, Joe Willie Brown of Blackstock and James W. Strong of Chester; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Arlene Johnson, 137 E. Lacy St.

The body will be carried to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

William Jones

CATAWBA - Mr. William Jones, 632 Will Jones Circle, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home, with Brother Charles Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Union Ezell Church cemetery.

A Sumter County native, Mr. Jones was a carpenter and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a former chef in the Merchant Marines and loved to play checkers. He attended Philadelphia public schools.

Surviving are three sons, Larry L. Jones, Nardrick Jones and Jack William Jones Jr., all of Catawba; seven daughters, Mabel Riddick of Fort Lawn, Cleo Shannon of Columbia, Carolyn Cowsar, Jenny Cherry, Christine Stradford, Clementine Cowsar and Kathy Stevenson, all of Catawba; 35 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Patsy Starnes

LANCASTER - Mrs. Patsy Lucille Scruggs Starnes, 47, of 1416 Burke Duncan Road died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Reid officiating. Burial will be at West Side Cemetery.

Born in Spartanburg, Mrs. Starnes was a retail sales clerk.

Surviving are two daughters, Wendy Kay Starnes of Lancaster and Amanda Starnes of Waxhaw, N.C.; her brother, James Walter Scruggs Jr. of Charlotte; her sister, Velma Kay Perry of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Wendy Starnes, 1416 Burke Duncan Road.

Johnnie Massey

ROCK HILL - The Rev. Johnnie A. Massey of 145 Walcott Court died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be noon Saturday at Mount Hebron Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.L. Robertson officiating and the Revs. B.R. Wilson, James Thompson, Charles Mason, John McCoy, Osbey Roddey, Leroy Ellison, Larkin Hancock and Napoleon Baxter assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A Chester County native, the Rev. Massey was a minister. He was a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church, a former Mason and a member of the Sandy River Baptist Association Upper Division. He attended Chester County public schools.

Surviving are three daughters, Helen Agurs of Buffalo, N.Y., Mary Ann Staten of Irvington, N.J., and Dorothy H. Seale of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Paul McCarty Sr.

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. - Maj. Paul Melvin McCarty Sr., 77, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Blount, Curry & Roel Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Born in Edgefield, Maj. McCarty served as a bombardier, navigator and strategic air commander in the Air Force. He retired in 1964 from Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas. He retired from Kennedy Space Center after 23 years of service and was a recipient of the Silver Snoopy Award. He lived in Rock Hill at one time and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 111 F & AM. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1318. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict.

He was the widower of Bette McCarty.

Surviving are his son, Paul Melvin McCarty Jr. of Austin, Texas; his daughter, Carolyn Young of Merritt Island, Fla.; his sister, Margaret Bauknight of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blount, Curry & Roel Funeral Home.

Willie Perry

CHESTER - Mr. Willie R. Perry of 1507 Harmsporta Drive, Sharon Hill, Penn., died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Fitzgerald Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Gadsden officiating and Dr. Marion Crawford assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Chester County, Mr. Perry was educated in Chester County public schools. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the friendly usher board.

Surviving are his son, Jackie Artis of Fort Lawn; his sister, Nadine C. Lowery of Chester County; and four grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m Friday.

Jessie Price

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Jessie Mae Eudy Price, 76, of 6784 Hightower Road died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Heath Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Rumford officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Keysville, Va., Mrs. Price was a retired waitress and a member of Heath Chapel United Methodist Church. She was educated in Chester County schools.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Price of Lancaster and Donnie Price of Fort Lawn; her daughter, Linda Lawson of Fort Lawn; two sisters, Louise Hall and Jessie Mae Helms, both of Great Falls; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Mattie Roberts

KERSHAW - Mrs. Mattie Bernice Scott Roberts, 85, of 6423 N. Matson Ext. died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church, with the Revs. Hugh McKinney, Billy Coates and Keith Coates officiating. Burial will be at the Ker-shaw City Cemetery.

Born in Kershaw, Mrs. Roberts was a member of Second Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are two sons, C. Everett Roberts of Kershaw and J. Michael Roberts of Lugoff; two daughters, Betty Cauthen and Bobbie Coates, both of Kershaw; her sister, Addie Freeman of Fort Pierce, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 7737 Kershaw-Camden Hwy., Kershaw, SC 29067.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

John Robinson

KERSHAW - Mr. John Clyde Robinson, 83, of 8793 Flat Creek Road died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Midway Baptist Church, with the Revs. Randall Runion and Warren Jones officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Pageland, Mr. Robinson was a member of Midway Baptist Church, a World War II veteran and a retired farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma Morgan Robinson; his brother, Emsley Robinson of Kershaw; two sisters, Lula Broome of Lancaster and Gladys R. Robinson of Kershaw.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Willie Mae Wilkes

CHESTER - Mrs. Willie Mae Glenn Wilkes, 76, of 105 Lowry St. died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Pratt officiating and the Revs. Bill Stringfellow Jr., E.E. Vance and W.E. Page assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Chester County, Mrs. Wilkes was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where she was a missionary, a member of the pastor's aid, a deaconess and a member of AP&B Society No. 4. She was the widow of Hezekiah Wilkes.

Surviving are three daughters, Frazier Lee Ware of Charlotte, and Callie McConnells and Barbara Howze, both of Chester; her stepdaughter, Martha Mae Cotton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her brother, Turner Glenn of Chester; four sisters, Mary Glenn and Alberta Glenn, both of Chester, Ida Clark of Charlotte and Pearl Glenn of New Jersey; two granddaughters that she reared, Lois Foote and Katrea Howze, both of Chester; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body will be carried to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mary Carnes

LANCASTER - Mrs. Mary E. Funderburk Carnes, 55, of 1586 Pageland Hwy. died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Rodney Powell and Joel Rhyner officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Carnes was employed by the Merita Bread Box and a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Ted H. Carnes of the home; her son, James M. Carnes of the home; her brother, Walter Clay Funderburk Jr. of Conway; and her sister, Ann Moree of Pageland.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Betty Lou Duncan

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Betty Lou Hammond Duncan, 69, of 1211 Ebinport Road died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at her home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Steve Hogg and Sollie Hicks officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Duncan was a member of First Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas Duncan; two sons, James R. Duncan of North Augusta and Thomas R. Duncan of Decatur, Ala.; her brother, Harold Hammond of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
