Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Abbeville Co. to Gerdie and Nettie Fisher Simpson, she died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: children, Barry Caldwell, Cheryl Stevens; 2 sisters; 3 grandchildren.

Margie Dabbs

LAURENS — Services with burial for Margie Verrina “Renie” Williamson Dabbs, 76, widow of Thomas Dabbs, are 2 p.m. today at Rabun Creek Baptist Church. The Kennedy Mortuary is in charge. Born in Abbeville Co. to James and Mattie Perry Williamson, she died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: sons, Thomas Jr. James Dabbs; siblings, Wallace, Hubert, David Williamson, Kathryn Ridgeway; three grandchildren.

Emma Gaddis

BOWMAN — Services with burial for Emma Florence Gaddis, 70, are 1 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Glover’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Jestro and Jessie Jones Gaddis, she died Dec. 26, 2004. Surviving: daughter, Vinzere Breadmon; sister, Alma Williams; aunt, Eloise Jones; grandchildren, Jerron, Latricia Breadmon; great-grand, Jarius Pressley; stepgreat-grand, Devontay Turkvant.

Edith Dowling

BEAUFORT — Services with burial for Edith Bannister Dowling, 89, widow of G.G. Dowling Jr., are 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church; visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home. Born in Liverpool, England, to Fred and Edith Bury Bannister, she died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving: sons, David Dowling, Grafton Dowling III; daughter, Elizabeth Dowling-Sendor; seven grandchildren.

Hillard Graves

COLUMBIA — Services for Hillard Graves, 90, will be held at noon (viewing 11 a.m.-noon) Saturday at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home, burial in St. Mark United Methodist Church West Cemetery, both in North. Born to Peter and Nancy Dean Graves, he died December 29, 2004. Survivors include cousins and friends.

Credia Herman

APPLING, Ga. — Services for Credia Mae Flynn Herman, 79, widow of Loran Herman, are 2 p.m. Saturday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Blyth Funeral Home; entombment in Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum. Born in Eubanks, Ky., to Jim Chris and Vada Casada Flynn, she died Dec. 28, 2004. Surviving: children, Betty Hubbard, Shelley Riddle, Gary, Willia, Bobby Herman; five sisters; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

Albert Cole

LITCHFIELD BEACH — Albert Harman Cole, 86, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Cole was born in Harmans, Md., on January 24, 1918, a son of the late Aubrey Randolph Cole and Bertha Eugenia Harman Cole. He graduated from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the honorary agricultural fraternity. Following graduation, Mr. Cole began a lengthy career with the USDA Soil Conservation Service and was District Conservationist in Florence Co. for more than 30 years.

As a long time resident of Florence, Mr. Cole was an active and devoted member of Central United Methodist Church, which he served in many capacities. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Florence Co. School Dist. Mr. Cole was currently a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown.

Mr. Cole considered his most important role to be a steward of the earth. In addition to his work as a conservationist, he loved gardening and took great pleasure, all his life, in sharing his vegetables with friends and family. Mr. Cole was an avid hunter and fisherman for many years. He cherished his many bird dogs and being in the great outdoors. Family and friends all treasure his endless supply of stories and tall tales, expertly told.

Mr. Cole was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was first married to the late Clyo Elizabeth Lawrimore Cole. Mr. Cole was also predeceased by two brothers, Richard S. Cole and Edwin R. Cole.

Surviving are: his wife, Bertha Lawrimore Uptegrove Cole of Litchfield Beach; a son, Edward R. Cole of Spartanburg; two daughters, Patricia Cole Springer of Washington , D.C., and Susan Cole Swails of Columbia; a step-son, Raymond R. Uptegrove of Hanahan; two step-daughters, Jane U. Owens of Goose Creek and Susan U. Leedecke of Orangeburg; a sister, Elizabeth C. Hile of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; Edward L. Cole of Arlington, Va., Alexandra S. Cole of Asheville, N.C., Erin E. Swails, Agee G. Springer, and Chapman L.C. Springer, all of Washington , D.C., and John Marshall Swails, Jr. of Columbia; six step-grandchildren, Dr. Russell L. Uptegrove of Springboro, Ohio, Ellen U. Allen of Charlotte, N.C., Angela O. Milner, Amy O. Sanchez, and Alicia Owens, all of Goose Creek, and G.J. Leedecke of Orangeburg; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 2, 2005, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill and the Rev. Chad Davis. Burial will follow in Pine Bluff Cemetery on Old Pee Dee Road in upper Georgetown Co.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church Parlor from 1:00 until 1:45.

Louise Hooper

SUMTER — Louise Weaver Hooper, 85, husband of Truman L. Hooper, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Johnsonville, she was a daughter of the late George Singleton Weaver and the late Lillian Cornelia Jones Weaver.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Edwins and her husband, Mark of Ridgeville and Kay Booth and her husband, David of Sumter; a grandson, Jonathan L. Booth of Sumter; two step-grandsons, Aaron Edwins of Summerville and Kurt Edwins of Miami, FL; a sister, Minnie W. Stoudenmire of Sumter; two brothers, Wesley Weaver of Barnesville, GA, and Wilbur Weaver of Douglasville, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Weaver of Johnsonville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. John C. Ropp, Jr. and Rev. Walt Kendall officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at Morningside Assisted Living, Room 144.

Memorials may be made to Morningside Assisted Living Memory Garden, 2500 Lin Do Court, Sumter, SC 29150 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 West Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Kimbrell

MARION — Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Aiken Kimbrell, 61, formerly of Marion, SC, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 31st, from the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Marion, SC. Visitation will follow the service in the Parish House.

Born in Marion, SC, Mrs. Kimbrell was a daughter of the late John Hagood Aiken and Elizabeth Heustess Aiken. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. She retired as Director of Clinical Services, having received her Bachelor’s Degree from Western Carolina University and her Master’s Degree from MUSC.

Survivors are her husband, Wayne Grier Kimbrell of the home; two sons, John James Kimbrell and Joseph Patrick (Michele) Kimbrell, both of Marion; a brother, Joseph H. (Martha) Aiken of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Jackie A. (Julian) Toporek of Savannah, GA, and one Grandchild, Coleman Kimbrell. She was predeceased by three brothers, Jimmy, David, and Johnny Aiken.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216; the American Red Cross, 1601-A West Lucas St., Florence, SC 29501 or to the Church of the Advent, P.O. Box 888, Marion, SC 29571.

Gayle Jones

PALM COAST, Fla. — Gayle Ann Saunders Jones, 59, of 28 Edith Lane, Palm Coast, FL, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004. Born in Richmond, VA, she was the daughter of the late John Hunter Saunders and the late Catherine Claggett Smith Saunders of Kenbridge, VA.

She is survived by her husband, William Clifford Jones, Jr. of Palm Coast; sons, Richard E. Carper, Jr. of Camden, SC; Travis G. Carper of Richmond, VA; Jason A. Moore and Cameron J. Jones of Bunnell, FL; daughters, Catherine C. Curtis of High Point, NC, and Tara E. Jones of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Carper, Dimitri Andrew Curtis, Ariel Hunter Curtis, Billiann Claggett Gibson, Lauren Cameron Jones; and a brother, Richard Saunders of Santa Rosa, CA. Graveside services will be held January 2, with interment in Kenbridge Heights Cemetery, Kenbridge, VA.

Emma Willis

WHITMIRE — Emma L. Willis, age 91, formerly of 320 Railroad Ave. and widow of Charlie Willis, died Wednesday on December 29th in Providence Hospital.

She was born in Kings Mountain and was the daughter of Reverend and Callie Lowery.

She had retired from J.P. Stevens, Whitmire Plant.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean McKinney of Columbia; stepdaughters-in-law, Emma Willis of Iva and Edna Willis of Greer; stepgranddaughter, Joyce Wood of Greer; nieces, Elsie Stephens of Columbia and Margie Franklin of Fort Walton Beach, FL; nephews, Donald Prather of Greer, and Thomas Prather of Clinton.

Graveside service will be held on Friday, December 31st at 3:00 p.m. in the Whitmire Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
