John Wasylewski

ROCK HILL - Mr. John C. Wasylewski, 79, of 441 Jackson St. died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Boyne Falls, Mich., Mr. Wasylewski was a son of the late Mike Wasylewski and Antoinette Wasylewski. He was employed with Celanese Corp. for more than 37 years and was active in the credit union. He was a member of the Celanese Breakfast Club and the American Legion Frank Roach Post 34. He was an active member of the York County Flyers Inc. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Wasylewski was an Army veteran of World War II and fought in many campaigns including the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He served under General George Patton during the surge to the Siegfried Line in Germany. He also fought at the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne. During his service he was awarded various service medals.

Surviving are his wife, Vernelle "Vern" Campbell Wasylewski; three brothers, Felix Wasylewski and Mike Wasylewski, both of Boyne City, Mich., and Frankie Wasylewski of Elmira, Mich.; two sisters, Anna Hart of Boyne City, and Wanda Karakash of Lincoln Park, Mich.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Greene Funeral Home.

Troy Wherry

ROCK HILL - Mr. Troy A. Wherry of 949 Crawford Road died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Victor Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Chestnut Grove AME Zion Church cemetery in Chester County.

Mr. Wherry was a native of York County. He was brick mason. He was a former member of Chestnut Grove AME Zion Church. He attended the public schools of York County.

Surviving are two sons, Latroy Lamar Wherry and Desmond Wherry, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Terrica Brice of Rock Hill; his father, Allen Crosby of Rock Hill; his mother, Alvina Wherry Thurman of Rock Hill; his brother, Willie Thurman of Rock Hill; his sister, Tomyra Ervin of Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home.

Blanche Wylie

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Blanche S. Wylie, 92, of 625 Evelyn St. died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon and the Rev. Carol R. Cannon officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Wylie was a daughter of the late Ewell W. Sturgis and Annie Enloe Sturgis. She was the widow of J.D. Wylie Sr. A homemaker, Mrs. Wylie was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member of the official board of St. John's and of the Browning-Sykes Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her son, J. David Wylie Jr. of the home; three brothers, Gilbert Sturgis, Albert Sturgis and Paul Sturgis, all of Rock Hill; her sister, Anna Belle Dodson of Rock Hill; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Rufus Billings

BLACKSBURG - Mr. Rufus Ricky Billings, 48, of 5380 Canaan Church Road died Tuesday, June 22, 1999.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia, N.C., with the Rev. Chester Waters officiating. Burial will be at Canaan United Methodist Church Cemetery in Smyrna.

A native of Anderson County, Mr. Billings was a son of the late Horace Wilson Billings and Mary Frances Cross Billings. He was an employee of Bruce's Iron and Metal Inc. of Gastonia. He was a member of York County Flyers and American Modelers Association.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Chandler Billings; two sons, Rufus Ricky Billings Jr. of the home and Robbie Matthew Billings of Blacks-burg; five brothers, Walter A. Perrin and Bobby E. Perrin, both of Grey Court, H.W. "Sonny" Billings of Gastonia, Bruce Wofford Billings of Anderson and Tommy A. Billings of South Carolina; and three sisters, Clara Burney and Maxine Hartman-Martin, both of Grey Court, and Ida Billings of Belmont, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home.

John Broome

ROCK HILL - Mr. John Latham Broome, 73, of 1075 Hearn St. died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at home.

The memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Garden Sanctuary Church of God, with the Rev. Mike Wooten officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of York County, Mr. Broome was a son of the late Thomas Broome and Fannie Montgomery Brooms. Mr. Broome was a World War II Navy veteran and member of Garden Sanctuary Church of God. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Rock Hill Chapter. He was retired from Wilson's Nursery and Garden Center, where he worked for 26 years.

Surviving are his daughter, Debbie Shaw of Rock Hill; his sister, Minnie Shugart of Rock Hill; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Pansy Bobo, 425 Jackson St., Rock Hill.

Talitha Cardwell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Talitha Leslie Cardwell, 83, of 538 Walnut St. died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Magnolia Manor.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Forest Musselman officiating. A native of Durham, N.C., Mrs. Cardwell was a daughter of the late Thomas Melvin Leslie and Avalone Huddleston Leslie. She was retired from M.L. Lowenstein after 35 years service. She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and a member of the Emma Bennett Circle.

Surviving are her son, Tom Cardwell of Rock Hill; her daughter, Lynn Hooper of York; her sister, Katherine L. Shonta of Middletown, Conn.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Robert Jackson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Robert V. Jackson, 46, of 406 Frank St. died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ronal King officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Jackson attended the public schools of York County. He attended Flint Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his father, Jake Jackson Sr. of Rock Hill; and his brother, Jake Jackson Jr. of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home and at the home of Jake Jackson Jr., 922 Martin Ave., Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.

Danny Mobley

CHESTER - Mr. Danny Mobley, 41, of 2388 Pressley Road died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at his home.

The funeral was Tuesday at Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Carl Williams officiating.

Mr. Mobley was born July 10, 1957, in Chester. He is the son of Harvey Winfield Mobley and Sylvia Langley Rockholt. He was a member of Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a carpenter. He attended Chester High School.

Surviving are his wife, Donnie G. Mobley; two sons, Daniel Mobley and Joshua Mobley, both of Chester; two sisters, Susan Mobley and Karen Rockholt, both of Rock Hill; his brother, Scott Mobley of Charlotte; his mother, Sylvia L. Rockholt of Rock Hill; and his father, Winfield Mobley of Chester.

Memorials may be made to Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church, 528 Brice St., Chester, SC 29796.

Evelyn Burrows

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Dr. Evelyn Yvonne Honor Burrows, 60, 7071 Darnell St., formerly of Chester, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C.

A private funeral service will be noon Saturday at Burning Bush Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville, with the Rev. Robert McQueen officiating. Burial will be at Rock Fish Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Dr. Burrows was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. J.C. Honor and Bertha Washington Honor. She was a former member of Antioch Baptist Church in Chester. She was a current member of Burning Bush Baptist Church in Chester. In 1999, she published a book of poetry, "Feet in Place Along the Narrow Way." She was a speech, language and vision consultant with the Ohio Department of Health. For 28 years, she served as an administrator and teacher of speech at Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla. She retired from Fayetteville State University. She was a speech and language pathologist in the Columbus, Ohio, school system and in Tallahassee.

She contributed to the North Carolina Speech, Language and Hearing Association, The Carolinas Communication Association, the American Speech Language and hearing Association and the National Communication Association. She served on committees at both state and national levels. She authored three articles in professional journals. She was a member of the NAACP and chairperson of the Democratic precinct in Cumberland County for more than 10 years. She attended Warren County public schools. She graduated with high honors from Hampton University and earned her master's and doctorate from Ohio State University.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Rodney A. Burrows; her son, Bruce A. Burrows of New York; two daughters, Stephanie Burrows of Cam-bridge, Mass. and Charlotte A. Bur-rows of Washington; her sister, Agretta Ross of Sumter; and her brother, John C. Honor of Mahwah, N.J.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the Paye Funeral Home, 515 Murchison Road, Fayetteville, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the Evelyn Burrows Speech Theater Scholarship Fund, c/o Fayetteville State University, Murchison Road, Fayetteville, NC 28301, King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., is in charge of local arrangements.

Nina Castles

LANCASTER - Mrs. Nina Faulkenberry Castles, 85, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Funeral Home, with the Revs. Shane Patrick and Roy Barnes officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Castles was a daughter of the late William Jasper Faulkenberry and Hattie McManus Faulkenberry. She was the widow of Lon James Castles. Mrs. Castles was a school teacher and retired from Speizman Industries Inc. of Charlotte. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lancaster.

Surviving are two daughters, Nina Mack Parker of Lake Wylie and Lonna Sanderson of Austin, Texas; her brother, Ward M. Faulkenberry of Lancaster; and two sisters, Oleta Harris and Ruth Brailsford, both of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Mafalda Dillingham

LANCASTER - Mrs. Mafalda "Fad" Wilson Dillingham, 88, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, N.C. The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Ernie Thompson and Samuel N. Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Dillingham was a daughter of the late James Stephen Wilson and Elizabeth Williams Wilson. She was the widow of Rex Howland Dilling-ham Sr. She was a retired bookkeeper for Wilson Gas and Oil Co. A graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, she attended Chicora College in Columbia. She was a former volunteer for the Mental Health Association, a member of the Red Rose Book Club, Waxhaw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Lancaster Garden Club. She was member and elder of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Rex H. Dillingham of Columbia and Dr. William Stephen Dillingham of Santa Clara, Calif.; her daughter, Patricia Dillingham Brown of Floyd, Va.; her sister, Jimmie Wilson Mullis of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Lancaster Mental Health Association. Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge.

Freddie Douglas

GRETNA, La. - Mr. Freddie Alexander "Zack" Douglas, 43, formerly of York, died Monday, June 21, 1999, in Louisiana.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at White Hill AME Zion Church in York, with the Rev. Dr. W.O. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York, Mr. Douglas was a son of Fred Douglas and Carrie Douglas of York. He joined White Hill AME Zion Church at an early age. He graduated from York High School in 1973 and served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Surviving in addition to his parents are three children, Wakisha Douglas, Freddie Douglas Jr., and Brandy Roberts; two sisters, Margaret Simpson of Sharon and Rosa Douglas of York; four brothers, Arthur Douglas, Billy Douglas, Derrick Douglas, all of York, and Terry Douglas of Maryland; and his paternal grandmother, Frances Douglas of York.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Douglas, 807 Hunter St., York.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home.
