Charles Langston

WAXHAW, N.C. - Mr. Charles William "Chuck" Langston, 77, of 6912 Davis Road died Monday, June 28, 1999, in Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Waxhaw Bible Church, with the Revs. Tom Brock, James Shelton and Steve Cathcart officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews, N.C.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Langston was a son of the late Roy Lee Langston and Artie Pearl Langston. He was a retired U.S. Army Major with 33 years service, who served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He retired from Hercules Inc. in Wilmington, Del. After retirement, he served as a short term missionary with Wycliffe Bible Translators/JAARS. He was a founding member and deacon at Waxhaw Bible Church. He and his wife founded El Rophe Christian Counseling Center in Waxhaw.

Surviving are his wife, Sidney W. Langston; two daughters, Terri Lynn Robinson of Elizabethton, Tenn. and Traci Lynn Robinson of Hopewell, Va.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service today at the church.

Joseph Pitts

CHESTER - Mr. Joseph Lester Pitts, 46, of 1248 Pitts Road died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Uriel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Black officiating.

A native of Chester County, he was a son of Betty Dodds Pitts of Chester and the late Samuel Lester Pitts. He was a self-employed carpenter and was known for his artistic craftsmanship in woodworking.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Darlene Wilkes and Josie Pitts, both of Chester; a sister, Patricia P. Bland of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at home.

Wright's Home for Funerals is in charge.

Millie Simpson

YORK - Mrs. Millie Simpson, 94, of the White Oak Manor in York, and formerly of Clover, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. W.T. Massey officiating. Burial will be in Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Lowrys.

Mrs. Simpson was a native of Chester County. She joined Christian Home Baptist Church in Lowrys at an early age. She later moved her membership to Jerusalem Baptist Church in Clover.

Mrs. Simpson was the daughter of the late Louella Burris. She was the widow of Harper Simpson.

Survivors include her daughters, Geneva Simpson, of York, and Jannie B. Holland, of Washington, D.C.; 12 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

Walter Thompson III

BRONSTON, Ky. - Mr. Walter L. Thompson III, 56, of Sycamore Drive, formerly of Rock Hill, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Wayne County Hospital.

The funeral will be 7 p.m. Friday at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery in Union.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Mr. Thompson was a son of Francis Howard Thompson and the late Walter L. Thompson Jr. He was a graduate of Winthrop University. He was a member of the Methodist faith. He was a sales manager with DARRS Inc. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was an aerial photographer and broadcaster for AFRTS in the United States, Vietnam, Korea, Turkey, Pakistan, Greece with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron. He was a past master and secretary of Burnside Lodge 643, F&AM, past commander of Somerset Commandery 31 of Knight Templar, member of KYCH, past president of Lake Cumberland Shrine Club, member of Truckin' Fez parade unit of Laurel County Shrine Club. He was past president of Lake Cumberland Lions Club.

Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Carole "Jonnie" Wix Thompson and his brother, Jerry Thompson of Orange Beach, Ala.

Memorials may be made to Burnside Lodge Building Fund or Oleika Shrine Temple transportation fund.

Ronald Baker

LANCASTER - Mr. Ronald Glenn Baker, 42, of 2351 J.B. Denton Road died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Harvest Time Church of God, with the Revs. James Chappell and Martin Foster officiating.

Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Todd C. Baker and Essie Mae Outlaw Baker. He was employed as a construction worker in the vinyl-siding business. He was a member of Harvest Time Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Foster Baker; his stepson, Ronnie Hensley of Lancaster; his stepdaughter, Bonnie Pitmon of Lancaster; his brother, Doug Baker of Lancaster; two sisters,

Mary Baker Kennington of Newberry and Linda Baker Robinson of Lancaster; and his grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Harvest Time Church of God, 2138 Lynwood Drive, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Boyd Faile

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Boyd Faile, 86, of 595 Boyd Faile Road died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Mullis and Von Cockrell officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Faile was a son of the late Lonnie Jack Faile and Elsie Faile. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Bowers Faile; his son, Larry H. Faile of Heath Springs; his daughter, Peggy F. Stroud of Heath Springs; his brother, Luther Faile of Rock Hill; two sisters, Idalene Taylor and Melita Rollings of the Charlesboro Community; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Hornsby Holmes Sr.

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Hornsby Holmes Sr. died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Z.B. Wells officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Hornsby was a son of the late Laura Maloney and Willie James Holmes. He joined Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Livisay of Milton, Ohio, Jennifer Holmes Patterson of New Jersey, and Laura Maloney of Great Falls; two sons, Hornsby Holmes Jr. of Columbia and Patrick Holmes of Beaufort; four sisters, Betty Relford of Chicago, Lottie Cloud of Fort Lawn, Sallie Caldwell of Great Falls, and Doris Holmes of Rock Hill; five brothers, James Lee Holmes, Raymond Holmes and Dan Holmes all of Great Falls, John Lewis Holmes of Rock Hill, and Walter Holmes of Ridgeway; and 10 grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at noon today.

Christopher King's Funeral Home of Chester was in charge.

Theodore McCree

CHESTER - Mr. Theodore McCree, 69, of Olive Hurst, Calif., formerly of Chester, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, in Maryland, Calif.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Baptist Church in Lowrys, with the Rev. George Lowry officiating and the Rev. Bobby Featherstone and Rev. Joe Lee assisting. Burial with full military honors will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. McCree was a self-employed property manager, and a retired U.S. Air Force staff sergeant of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. A graduate of Finley High School, he was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and attended Bethel AME Zion Church of California. He was a member of Thomas P. Smith Masonic Lodge #78 F&AM.

Surviving are five brothers, J.B. McCree, Glen McCree, Thelmore McCree and Andrew McCree, all of Chester, and Theodore D. McCree of Columbus, Ohio; and two sisters, Doris Nelson of Sacramento, Calif., and Daisy Moore of Greenwood.

Masonic honors will be 7 to 8 p.m. today at Denton Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state at the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The family will receive friends at the home of Glen and Emma McCree, 562 McCree Dr., Chester.

Clifton Rhodes

CLOVER - Mr. Clifton Braxton Rhodes, 67, of 1005 Birchwood Drive, formerly of Albemarle, N.C., died Friday, July 2, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bowling Green Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bob Abel officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Rhodes was a son of the late Roy Lee Rhodes and Gladys Mae Carney Rhodes. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of Bowling Green Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia Ann Stallings of Clover; his sister, Gladys Winn of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Earline Scott

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Earline McDowell Scott, 74, of 1950 Eden Terrace died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Ministries Church, with the Rev. Dexter Lambert officiating and the Revs. Greg Means and Tim Boan assisting. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of St. Paul, N.C., Mrs. Scott was a daughter of the late Monroe McDowell and Ella Belle Alford McDowell. She was the widow of Douglas "Doug" Thompson Scott. She was retired from the Little People Daycare and was a member of Grace Ministries Church.

Surviving are two sons, Donald Thompson Scott and James Monroe Scott, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Barbara Scott Neal, Mary Ann Scott Leopard and Kathryn Scott Sowell, all of Rock Hill; two brothers, Monroe McDowell of Clarendon, N.C. and James McDowell of Whiteville, N.C., five sisters, Bernice Hall of Newport, N.C., Ada Barnhill of Clarnedon, N.C., Letha Saber of Mayville, Wis., Frances Guagliardo and Udell McDowell, both of Milwaukee, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight and at other times at the home.

Jessie Simpson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Jessie B. Simpson of 1995 Dunlap Roddey Road died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. S. B. McBeth Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Simpson was a daughter of the late Thomas Barber and Mary Barber. She was the widow of Rayford Simpson. A graduate of Emmett Scott High School, she received her bachelor's degree from Benedict College in Columbia, her master's degree from South Carolina State College, and did further studies at Johnson C. Smith University and Claflin University.

She was formerly a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and for years had been a member of New Mount Olivet. She retired as a school teacher from the Rock Hill school district after 30 years.

Surviving are two sons, Barber Simpson and Thomas Simpson, both of Charlotte; her daughter, Doris Simpson of the home; her sister, Brennie Barber Anderson of Charlotte; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mary Thomas

CHESTER - Mrs. Mary B. Thomas, 81, of 510 Saluda Road died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Ronnie Green and Gregg Keller officiating. Burial will be at Armenia United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Thomas attended the schools of Chester County. She was a homemaker and member of Second Baptist Church. She was the widow of Otho W. Thomas Sr.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae Huntington of Chester; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Jessie Mae Huntington, 510 Saluda Road in Chester.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 610 Calvary Church Road, Chester, SC 29706.

Nesbett Buckson

BALTIMORE - Mr. Nesbett Buckson of 3207 Alameda St., formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, June 24, 1999, at Baltimore General Hospital.

Mr. Buckson was the son of the late Thomas and Dora Crosby Buckson. He was a former member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fairfield County. He attended the public schools of Fairfield.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jones Buckson; five sons, Nesbett Buckson Jr., Ronald Buckson, Selvester Buckson, Marion Buckson and Thomas Buckson, all of Baltimore; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Graves of Baltimore; four sisters, Artis Watkins of Baltimore and Vela Crosdale-Swinton, Pearline Cox and Helen McElhaney, all of the Bronx, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, is in charge of local arrangements.
