Edith Lightner

LAKE WYLIE - Mrs. Edith Miller Lightner of Creole Road died Saturday, June 26, 1999 at home.

A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at River Hills Community Church, Highway 49 at 104 Hamilton's Ferry Road in Lake Wylie, with the Rev. E. Russell Brown officiating.

A native of Baltimore, Mrs. Lightner was a daughter of the late Edward Charles and Edith Worley Miller. She was educated at McCoy College/Johns Hopkins University in business and accounting. She was a copy writer for the Baltimore News Post and WFBR radio and television station. She started C.C.S.

Machinery Manufacturers in 1962. She became a secretary and accountant and worked for Lite Oper, Lightner Operations and S.C. Products and Fabricator Inc.

Survivors include her husband, Charles J. Lightner; her son, Michael Gary Lightner of Charlotte; her daughter, Kathleen Lightner Rudzki of Maryland; her brother, Edward Charles Miller of Shreveport, La.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather at the home after the memorial.

Memorials may be made to Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS Center, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Mildred Long

NORTH AUGUSTA - Mrs. Mildred Jayne Long, 77, of 111 Nutgrove Ave., formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, July 5, 1999, at her home.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Jasper County, Ill., Mrs. Long was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Newton, Ill. She was a retired nurse.

She was the daughter of the late John M. and Sylvania McKinney Jayne.

Survivors include her husband, Eli Frederick Long; her daughter, Michele Keefe of Edgefield; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Sara McClure

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sara Hutchison McClure, 36, of 528 Frank Street died Saturday, July 3, 1999 at her home.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating and the Revs. L.A. Pride and Bettye Hicks assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. McClure was a member of the Cross Road Baptist Church and attended York County public schools.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie McClure of Rock Hill; three sons, Travis Hutchison, Justin Hutchison and Jamie McClure, all of Rock Hill; her daughter, Brandy Hutchison of Gastonia, N.C.; her mother, Addie Hutchison of Rock Hill; five brothers, Joel Hutchison of Rock Hill, James White, Vernon White, Andre White and Melvin White, all of Fort Mill; two sisters, the Rev. Ellen Fewell of Rock Hill and Mary Gilmore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one grandson.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends at Mrs. McClure's home at 528 Frank Street and at the home of her mother, 333 North Jones Ave., Apt. A.

Eusebio Mendez

LANCASTER - Mr. Eusebio Mendez, 28, of Memorial Park Road died Friday, July 2, 1999.

A memorial service was Tuesday evening at St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Mr. Mendez was the son of Roque Moreno and Ana Mendez.

He was born in Tierra Blanca Veracruz, Mexico. He was an employee of American Foundary and Machine Shop.

Survivors include his wife, Flora Monos; two daughters, Fernanda Jurares and Consepico Juares; and his brother, Cristantos Mendez.

Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge.

Joseph Sarolea

ROCK HILL - Mr. Joseph W. Sarolea, 67, of Dunlap-Roddey Road, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating.

A native of New York, Mr. Sarolea was the son of the late Joseph Sarolea and Anna Sarolea. He was an insurance agent and civil engineer.

Mr. Sarolea was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church. He entered the Knights of Columbus in 1980 by joining the Oratory Council of Rock Hill. By the fraternal year, 1982-83, he served as Grand Knight. By the fraternal year 1992-93, he became state deputy. He also served in other local and state offices.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Sarolea; his son, Thomas Sarolea of Rock Hill; three daughters, Jean Browne and Joanne Evans, both of Rock Hill, and Carol Fitzgerald of New York; and six grandchildren.

A vigil service will be 6:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill chapel. The family will receive friends following the service until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Anne Building Fund, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Evelyn Stradford

CHESTER - Mrs. Evelyn Steele Stradford, 84, of 199 Ligon St. died Saturday, July 3, 1999 at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. Terrance Grooms officiating and the Rev. Robert Entzminger assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Stradford was the daughter of the late George Steele and Laura Turner Steele. She was the widow of the late John T. Stradford.

She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, treasurer of the Pastor's Aide, a member of the Friendship Club and a member of the Christian Burial Aid Society. She attended schools in Chester County. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Group and a retired domestic worker.

Survivors include her sister, Daisy Thompson of Chester and her niece and caregiver, Beatrice Jones of Chester.

The family will receive friends at the home of Beatrice Jones, 142 Bell St., Chester. The body may be viewed from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. The body will be carried to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Monty Thompson

HARTSVILLE - Mr. Monty C. Thompson, 47, died Sunday, July 4, 1999.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, with the Revs. Del Morgan, Bill Todd and David Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery.

A native of Hartsville, Mr. Thompson was the son of the late W.A. Thompson and Bonnie Hill Thompson. He was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and the University of South Carolina. Mr. Thompson was retired from the Darlington County Sheriff's Office and was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173.

Surviving are his wife, Gail McElveen Thompson of Hartsville; his son, Mark Thompson of Hartsville; his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Lawrence Jenkins of Hartsville; four brothers, Larry Thompson and Tony Thompson, both of Hartsville, and Rusty Thompson and Randy Thompson, both of Rock Hill; his stepmother, Polly Thompson of Pelzer; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Church of God of Reformation Youth Scholarship Fund.

Jennie Brown

CHESTER - Mrs. Jennie Strickland Brown, 101, of 1625 Brown Road died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Catholic Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Forrest Musselman officiating.

A native of Warsaw, N.C., Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Frank Strickland and Liza Parker Strickland. She was the widow of William Wesley Brown. A homemaker, she was a member of Catholic Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathryn Bateman of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Catholic Presbyterian Church, 6368 Old Winnsboro Road, Blackstock, SC 29014.

Sammie Chisholm

ROCK HILL - Mr. Sammie Chisholm, 79, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Mosley officiating and the Revs. Larry Robinson and Louvenia Pride and Lankton Lee assisting.

Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Chisholm was a son of the late Jacob Chisholm and Carrie Sandifer Chisholm. He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co.

Surviving are his wife, Louise P. Chisholm; 10 sons, Daniel Chisholm of Clover, Kennedy Chisholm of the home, James Chisholm, Theodore Page, Sammie Lee Chisholm and Johnny Chisholm, all of Rock Hill, William Chisholm of Leslie, Morris Chisholm and Marshall Chisholm, both of Charlotte, and Jerome Belton of Orlando, Fla.; four daughters, Eva Hoyles, Mildred Parks and Linda Dixon, all of Rock Hill, and Gloria Dixon of Fort Mill; his foster daughter, Mary Hardy of the home; his sister, Mary Ann Young of Washington; nine brothers, Jacob Chisholm, Abraham Chisholm, Howard Chisholm, the Rev. Daniel Chisholm and Allen Chisholm, all of Rock Hill, the Rev. Joseph Chisholm and Walter Chisholm, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Chisholm and John C. Chisholm, both of Washington; 53 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Clemons Funeral Home.

Jennie Cole

YORK - Mrs. Jennie Mae Cole, 65, of 102 Payne Court died Monday, July 5, 1999, at her home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at St. Luke No. 2 Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. A.A. Abernathy officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of York County, she was a member of St. Luke No. 2 Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Sgt. James Madison Cole Jr. of Maryland; four daughters, Betty R. Wilmore, Kimerly Cole and Tammy Cole, all of York, and Shirley Berry of Gastonia, N.C.; four brothers, Dennie McClure of Sharon, David McClure of Hickory Grove, Rob McClure of York and Jimmy Dean McClure of Charlotte; three sisters, Betty Holmes, Elizabeth McClure and Sally McCombs, all of York; her half-sister, Bernice Bozeman of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Betty Ruth Wilmore, 402 Hunter St., York.

Jane Cox

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Jane Palmer Cox, 59, of Charlotte died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at a Charlotte nursing home.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Cox was a daughter of the late Robert F. Palmer and Isabel Palmer. A graduate of Winthrop University, Mrs. Palmer was an elementary school teacher in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Anderson. She enjoyed playing bridge, shagging to beach music, sewing and arts and crafts.

Surviving are her husband, James B. Cox Jr.; her son, James "Ben" Cox Jr. of Wilson, N.C.; her daughter, Mary Catherine Cox of Charlotte; her brother, Robert F. Palmer Jr. of Fort Mill; and her sister, Mary Ann Palmer of Winston-Salem.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, Columbia.

Trinity Ernandez

RICHBURG - Mr. Trinity Neal "Cookie" Ernandez, 15, of 3350 Edgeland Road died Monday, July 5, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sam Warwick officiating. Burial will be at Lando Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Trinity was a son of Barry Neal Ernandez and Tammy Horne Ernandez. He was a rising junior at Lewisville High School, where he was a member of the Lions Band. He enjoyed playing softball and was a member of Lando Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his stepmother, Terry Lynn Ernandez of the home; his brother, Zachery Levi McCorkle of the home; two sisters, Tori Ernandez and Misty Michelle Ernandez, both of the home; his paternal grandparents, "Mouse" and Joyce Ernandez of Edgemoor; his maternal grandmother, Vivian Horne of Richburg; his maternal grandfather, Robert Horne of Pittsburgh; his maternal stepgrandparents, Terry and Linda McCorkle of Richburg; his maternal stepgreat-grandparents, Wylie and Henrietta Wylie of Lando; and his stepgreat-grandfather, Bob Bentley of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Heidi Grant

YORK - Miss Heidi McKenzie Grant, 16, of 1681 Stoney Fork Road died Tuesday, July 6, 1999.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Thomas A. Little officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Born at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, Heidi was a rising senior at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill. She worked at the Super Wal-Mart.

Surviving are her mother, Trudy McKenzie Bradford of York; her father, Ronald Lynn Grant of Rock Hill; her stepfather, Howard L. Bradford of York; her brother, Ronald Lynn Grant II of Rock Hill; her sister, Alison R. Vesper of New Jersey; and her maternal grandfather, James C. McKenzie of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her grandfather, James C. McKenzie, 649 Morningside Drive, Rock Hill.

Elliott Harris II

Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. - Mr. Elliott Pierson "Abie" Harris II, 73, of Chickamauga, Ga., formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill.

Mr. Harris was a native of York County and had lived in Chickamauga for the past 23 years. He worked for M. Lowenstein and Sons in Rock Hill and Lyman for 29 years before retiring from the Dan River Co./Crystal Springs Print Work in Chickamauga in 1986, where he was lab manager. Mr. Harris was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater. He was awarded medals for the Battle of the Bulge, the Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Medal and a Purple Heart. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rock Hill. He was a Shriner, Mason and member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Sara Frances Benfield Harris; five sons, Elliott Pierson "Butch" Harris III and Joe Harris, both of Chickamauga, Tim Harris and Greg Harris, both of Greer, and Gettys W. Harris of York; his daughter, Pat Harris of Bluffton; two brothers, Lloyd Harris of Columbia and Gettys N. Harris of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.
