Howard Johnson

CLOVER- Mr. Howard S. Johnson, 77, of 1298 Highway 55 West died Tuesday, July 6, 1999 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Hutchison officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Johnson was the son of the late Sylvester Patrick Johnson and Julia Smart Johnson. He was the owner and operator of Howard Johnson's Drive-in in Clover. Mr. Johnson served as a member of the First National Bank of S.C., Divine Saviour Hospital, Clover Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church in Clover.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Johnson; his son, Mac Johnson of Clover; and four sisters, Mary Kelly of Clover, Gladys Glenn of Florida, Ruth Smith of Rock Hill and Linda Currence of Clover.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 124 Bethel St., Clover, SC 29710.

Sara McClure

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sara Hutchison McClure, 36, of 528 Frank St. died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at her home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating and the Revs. L.A. Pride, Bettye Hicks and Ellen Fewell assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. McClure was a member of the Cross Road Baptist Church and attended York County public schools.

Surviving are her husband, Eddie McClure of Rock Hill; three sons, Travis Hutchison, Justin Hutchison and Jamie McClure, all of Rock Hill; her daughter, Brandy Hutchison of Gastonia, N.C.; her mother, Addie Hutchison of Rock Hill; five brothers, Joel Hutchison of Rock Hill and James White, Vernon White, Andre White and Melvin White, all of Fort Mill; two sisters, the Rev. Ellen Fewell of Rock Hill and Mary Gilmore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and her grandson.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. today.

The family will receive friends at home and at the home of her mother, 333 North Jones Ave., Apt. A, Rock Hill.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

John Preslar Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. John Everette Preslar Jr., 35, of 410 S. Market St. died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with Deacon Wayne Snipes officiating.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mr. Preslar was a son of the late John Everette Preslar Sr. and Bobby Jean Cagle Preslar. He was employed by Miller Construction Co.

Surviving are two brothers, Larry Preslar and Tony Preslar, both of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Iva Robinson

CLOVER - Mrs. Iva Neely Robinson, 93, of 702 S. Main St. died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Clover ARP Church, with the Revs. Robert Patrick and Calvin Draffin officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late Milas Hance Neely and Elizabeth Barber Neely. She was the widow of James Allen Robinson. Mrs. Robinson was the oldest member of Clover ARP Church. She was a charter member of the Clover Woman's Club and Clover Chapter of Eastern Star. She was a Red Cross volunteer and Boy Scout leader, served as a board member on York County for the Aged and was past president of the Clover Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Robert H. Robinson of Easley; two daughters, Sara R. Brown of York and Mary R. Fisher of Clover; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Ladson Smith

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ladson Lamaine Smith, 72, of 2989 Steele Village Road died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Scoggins officiating and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Horton assisting. Burial will be at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery,

A native of Liberty, Mr. Smith was a son of late Joseph Warren Smith and Mattie Kennemer Smith. He was employed by Southeast Industrial in Rock Hill and formerly worked for Lewis Lincoln Mercury Automotive. He was a member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He attended Georgia Tech University. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Steele Smith; his former wife and mother of his children, Louise N. Smith of Rock Hill; his son, David L. Smith of York; four daughters, Linda Frank of Lancaster, Carol Stewart of Rock Hill, Martha Bennett of York and Julia McAteer of McConnells; two stepsons, Ronnie Corder and Randy Yarborough, both of Chester; two stepdaughters, Patty Adams and Roxann James of Rock Hill; three sisters, Jo Daniel of Lake City, Ruth Page of Hartwell, Ga., and Grace Smith of Martin, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

James Castle

YORK - Mr. James Eugene Castle, 84, of 6 Lynwood Circle died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Ebenezer Nursing Home in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with Father Donald Lowery officiating. Burial will be in the Columbarium at the church.

A native of Beverly, Mass, Mr. Castle was a son of the late Anthony Castle and Alexandrina Abate Castle. He was a mining and metallurgical engineer and was retired from Combustion Engineering in Clover. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Thomas Castle; his son, David Castle of Moncks Corner; his daughter, Sharon Castle Blankenship of Greer; his brother, Anthony Castle of Hingham, Mass.; four sisters, Vickie C. Nozko of West Hartford, Conn., Delma C. Lanius of Nokomis, Fla., Sally C. Chaney of Texas and Vi C. Connolly of Salem, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

Jewel Dawkins

FORT MILL - Mrs. Jewel Pauline Dawkins, 65, of 515 Jacobs Ridge died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, with the Rev. Jody Wright officiating.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Dawkins was a daughter of the late Eva Stanley Prince. She was the widow of William "Bill" Dawkins Sr. Mrs. Dawkins was a retired legal secretary.

Surviving are three sons, William M. Dawkins Jr. of Denver, N.C., Alan D. Dawkins of Gastonia, N.C., and Ben Dawkins of Lancaster; two daughters, Ann D. Ford of Fort Mill and Karey D. Warren of Newton, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wright's Home for Funerals in Chester.

Toy Greene

ROCK HILL - Mr. Toy Howard Greene, 91, of 3512 Lesslie Highway died Friday, July 9, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Catawba Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Tommy Huddleston, the Rev. Jerry Devinney and the Rev. Dr. Jerry Sosebee officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Greene was a son of the late John Henry Green and Mollie Neal Green. He was the widower of Ruby Faulkenberry Greene. He opened Greene Funeral Home in 1954, and it continues to be a family-owned and operated business. He began his career in 1926 with W. G. Reid & Sons, a furniture and undertaking establishment. He and Robert Wolfe opened Wolfe-Greene Funeral Home in 1936.

Mr. Greene was an embalmer on a mortuary ship during World War II. He was the oldest licensed funeral director and embalmer in South Carolina.

He coached youth and American Legion baseball. He was instrumental in starting the choirs at Woodhaven Baptist Church and Catawba Baptist Church, where he was a member, trustee and deacon.

Surviving are two sons, Donald B. Greene of Catawba and Howard F. "Buddy" Greene of Rock Hill; his daughter, Sue G. Walters of Rock Hill; his sister, Elva G. McCoy of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Rebecca Hardin

CHESTER - Mrs. Rebecca Fleming Hardin, formerly of 138 Loomis St., died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jesse Boulware and J.D. McClurkin officiating.

The Rev. Joseph Neal will give the eulogy. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Laurens, Mrs. Hardin was a daughter of the late Will Poole Fleming and Emma Owens Fleming. She was the widow of Ardry D. Hardin. She graduated from the public schools of Laurens. She graduated from Benedict College and attended South Carolina State University and Winthrop University. She was retired from the Chester County school district. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served on the Deacon's Wives Organization and the Missionary Society. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Pulpit Aid, Helping Hand Club, and Youth Club advisor. She was a founding member of the C. Neal Educational Center, advisor to Young Adult Auxiliary and Live Wire Usher Board.

Surviving are seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be private.

Kenneth McMurtry

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - Mr. Kenneth L. McMurtry, 54, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999.

The funeral will be Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Iris Cauthen McMurtry, formerly of Lancaster; two children, Tonya McMurtry and Cody McMurtry; his mother, Mary Cammack; his brother, Everette McMurtry Jr. and three sisters.

Mary Turner

YORK - Mrs. Mary "Mattie" Collins Turner, 90, of 111 S. Congress St. died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at White Oak Manor in York.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at York Funeral Home, with the Rev. Randy Howington officiating and the Rev. Bruce Kiser assisting. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Marcus Collins and Mary Jane Hullett Collins. She was the widow of Paul Turner. She was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church and had attended the Clover Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are her daughter, Virginia Stewart of Clover; her sister, Eldie Stewart of Clover; 18 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Brenda Parker, 309 Parker Road, York.

Earl Wilkes

CHESTER - Mr. Earl Carlisle "Kite" Wilkes, 76, of 683 Lancaster Highway died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. Tommy Brazell and R.E. Murray officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Leeds, Mr. Wilkes was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Wilkes and Janie Allen Wilkes. He was a carpenter and member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Alma W. Wilkes; his son Terry Wilkes of Chester; four stepdaughters, Nancy Moore, Janice Patrick and Barbara Wall, all of Chester, and Joan Basham of Union; two brothers, Larry Wilkes of Columbia and Harold Wilkes of Lancaster; five sisters, Goby Beckham, Peggy Casey, Sara Statham, Mary Morgan and Margie Brock, all of Chester; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Tommie Barber

ROCK HILL - Miss Tommie Mae Barber, 69, of 1116 Cypress St. died Thursday, July 8, 1999 at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. W. B. White officiating and the Revs. Ronald Broome and Fred J. Blakely assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Miss Barber was the daughter of the late Henry Massey and the late Lonnie Mae Biggers. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church where she was former president of Choir No. 1 and the Sunday school, children/youth choir advisor, youth usher board advisor and chair of several church fundraiser committees. She was a Boy/Cub Scout leader of Troop 154. She graduated from Emmett Scott High School and was a retired custodian.

Surviving are two sons, Charles L. Barber and Eatchia M. Barber, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Van D. Heath of Rock Hill, Lonnie M. Hall of Stanford, Conn., and JoAnn Barber of Summersville, N.J.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Parker's Funeral Home and at other times at 700 N. Confederate St. The body will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday.

Elena Lowery

LANCASTER - Mrs. Elena Salcido Lowery, 76, of 791 Dahlia Road died Friday, June 9, 1999, at the Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Revs. Alpheus Evans, Kenneth Wren, Joel Rhyner and her grandson, the Rev. Jeff Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of El Paso, Texas, Mrs. Lowery was a daughter of the late Enrique Salcido and Maria Roacho Salcido. She was retired from Springs Industries Grace Bleachery sewing room. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Lowery Williams, Patricia Lowery Morris and Barbara Lowery Tolbert, all of Lancaster; her sister, Delores Evora of South Gate, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the home of her daughter, Elizabeth Williams, at 807 Dahlia Road.
