Robert McCraw

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Robert Ray McCraw, 83, of Columbia, SC, will be held 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, January 4, 2004, in Crescent Hill Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Ron Bryan Dr. Lamar McCarroll. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with Masonic Rites given by Acacia Masonic Lodge #94 with Brethren of The Craft to be Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Monday evening in Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Center, 7230 Sumter Highway, Columbia, SC 29209, or the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. McCraw died Saturday, January 01, 2005. Born in Gaffney, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas M. and Zelma Huskey McCraw. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of WWII. Mr. McCraw was a former employee of South Carolina Department Health and Environmental Control; he was a member of Acacia Masonic Lodge #94, The Scottish Rite, Columbia, SC, where over the years he headed all four bodies and Coroneted an Inspector General Honorary of the Thirty Third Degree. He was also Vice Chairman of Publicity and Public Relations for the Fund Raising Committee. Mr. McCraw was a Charter member of Jamil Shrine Temple where he was a former member of the Director’s Staff. He was a bowler for over 50 years, and was a member of Bowling Hall of Fame where he held various offices in a number of leagues. Mr. McCraw was an active member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, the Men’s Adult Four Sunday School Class and a deacon of the church.

Survivors include: best friend and companion, Ruth Cline Harper of Lexington; his sister, Mary Anne Meadows; nieces, Bonnie Jayne Meadows and Mary Lynn Meadows all of Asheville, NC and Ida L. Knight of Clyo, GA; a nephew Tom Meadows of Jacksonville, FL; one great nephew and one great niece. Mr. McCraw was preceded in death by wife, Virginia T. “Ginny” McCraw and sister-in-law, Alma L. Rodgers.

Mildred Hudson

LANCASTER — Services with burial for Mildred Agnes Cauthen Hudson, 82, widow of J.W. Hudson, are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Visitation is 6:30-8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel. Born in Lancaster to Chalmus and Mamie Rollins Cauthen, she died Jan. 1, 2005. Surviving: children, Billy Hudson, Carolyn Waites, Peggy Mangum; 5 siblings; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

Sybil Hedden

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Services for Sybil I. Hedden, 61, are 11 a.m. (visitation 10 a.m.) today at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, Orangeburg, S.C., with burial in Island Cemetery, Santee, S.C. Born in Calhoun Co. to Whitsel and Deon Stabler Inabinet, she died Jan. 1, 2005. She was a member of West Fayetteville Baptist Church. Surviving are children, Phil, Carlos Shuler Jr., Phyllis Ray, Melinda Floyd; four grandchildren.

Blanche Rucker

TIMMONSVILLE — Services for Blanche Godwin Rucker, 82, are 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul UMC, Florence, with burial in Florence Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, Florence. Born in Kingstree to Robert and Mary Montgomery Godwin, she died Jan. 1, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Ann, Debbie Rucker, Tammy Bell; granddaughter, Ashley Bell; nieces; nephews.

Mildred Snipes

LANCASTER — Services for Mildred Gay Snipes, 87, widow of Jeff Snipes, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park. Visitation 6-8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home. Born in Lancaster Co. to John and Sally Hendrix Gay, she died Jan. 1, 2005. Surviving are children, Donnie, J. Frank, Ben Snipes, Gloria Neal, Dianne Moreno; three siblings; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Andrew Canady

EFFINGHAM — Services for Andrew Lovel Canady, 63, owner of Andy’s Prints, are 2 p.m. Tuesday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home with entombment in Mausoleum at Florence Memorial Gardens. Born in Brunswick Co., N.C. to Clayton and Louella Bethea Canady, he died Jan. 1, 2005. Surviving are wife, Pearleen Green Canady; three sons; two brothers; one sister; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Frances Fisher

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Frances Young Fisher, 96, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday 7-9 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Fisher died Sunday, January 02, 2005. Born in Cheyenne, Okla., she was a daughter of the late Clyde Young and Della Iona Hopkins Young. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Virginia, she held supervisory positions in public education and welfare.

Mrs. Fisher was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Charles F. and Deborah Warrington of Columbia; sister, Vashti Allen of Bartelsville, Okla.; brother, Clyde Young of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Carol Locklear and Robert Warrington, both of Columbia, Charlie Warrington of Camden, Clyde Warrington of Monroe, N.C. and Keith Warrington of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Joey Locklear, Jr., Adam Locklear, Robert Warrington, Jr., Christen Warrington, Morgan Warrington, Hanna Warrington and C.J. Warrington; and great-great-grandchild, Hunter Locklear.

John D. Puckett
June 30, 2003

John D. Puckett, 85, of 2530 Fair Ave., Newberry, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Puckett was born on September 24, 1917, in Laurens County, a son of the late G. R. and Florence Brown Puckett. He was an Army veteran of WW II and he was a retired employee of the Kendall Company, Oakland Plant
Mr. Puckett is survived by his wife, Florence Littlejohn Puckett of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Thom Peer of Brunson SC; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Larry Champion of Newberry and Dorothy and John Smith of Jacksonville Fl; a brother and sister in law, Otis and Dorothy Puckett of Whitmire; five grandchildren who were reared in the home, Casey S. Morgan, Misty W. Stockman, Melissa Barbare, Nickie Woodward and Woody Champion; two great grandchildren, Christopher and Danielle Reeves; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Elbert Puckett and sisters, Lois Rollins, Inez Lawry, Lola Eskews, and Ruth English.
Funeral services for John D. Puckett will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be Johnny Stockman, Casey Morgan, Kenny Barbare, Larry Champion, Ian Atkin, Johnny Smith, and Woody Champion.

Carolyn Ruth Vriezelaar
June 30, 2003

Carolyn Ruth Vriezelaar, 52, of 70 Hunter Lane, Prosperity, wife of Donald W. Vriezelaar, died Monday, June 30, 2003 Palmetto Richland Hospital.
Mrs. Vriezelaar was born on July 22, 1950, in Reed City, MI, a daughter of the late Daniel and Ruth Brocker Henderson. She was a pharmacist at Palmetto Richland Hospital. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of South Carolina.
Mrs. Vriezelaar is survived by her husband of the home; two daughters, Cammi Bell of Mill Valley, CA and Jodie Jeffery of Savannah, GA; two sons, Daren Vriezelaar of Oak Point, TX and Job Jeffery of Gaston, SC; two sisters, Elaine Kamptner of Big Rapids, MI and Judy Rolston of Coral, MI; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services for Carolyn Ruth Vriezelaar will be conducted at 4:30 PM Thursday in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Children’s Hospital of Palmetto Health Foundation, 9 Richland Memorial Park Dr., Suite 600, Columbia SC 29203.

Juanita Swindler Black
June 26, 2003

Juanita Swindler Black, 90, of 218 North Main Street, Prosperity, widow of Ralph B. Black, died Thursday, June 26, 2003 at Life Care Center of Columbia.
Mrs. Black was born on July 14, 1912 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Henry W. and Lillie Mae Davis Swindler. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught for over 30 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, a former Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher, a member of WELCA and was involved in many other church activities. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy
Mrs. Black is survived by two sons, R. Buck Black and H. Luke Black, both of Prosperity; a sister, Dare S. Dominick of Prosperity and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn S. Pender and a brother, Joe Wesley Swindler.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at the Prosperity Cemetery by the Rev. Eric Fink.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home
Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, P. O. Box 188, Prosperity, SC 29127.
Honorary pallbearers will be L. Dale Boozer, Edward L. Pender, Jr., Randall M. Swindler, William Darrell White, Sr., Robert Allen Boozer, Robert Lindsey Boozer, William Marshall Peterson, Sr., and Barry Martin Swindler.

James M. Bannister, Sr.
June 24, 2003

James M. Bannister, Sr., 84, of 503 Main Street, Newberry, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Bannister was born on December 8, 1918 in Newberry County, a son of the late Jim and Maude Caldwell Bannister. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in World War II. He was a retired Building Contractor and also retired from Newberry Mills with over 40 years of services. He was involved in the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts for over 35 years.
Mr. Bannister was a member of O’Neal United Methodist Church, Men’s Bible Class and a former member of the administrative board. He was a member of Amity Masonic Lodge #87, a member of the Newberry York Rite Bodies, and a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Mr. Bannister is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Kinard Bannister of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Janice Bannister of Newberry; a sister, Frances B. Danielsen of Newberry; a brother, Roy Bannister of Little Mountain; six grandchildren, Clark Bannister, Ashley Bannister, Jim Bannister, Brett Bannister, Mark Bannister and Brian Bannister; three great-grandchildren, Hanna Bannister, Daniel Bannister, and Mary Catherine Bannister. He was predeceased by a son, James M. Bannister, Jr.
Funeral services for James M. Bannister will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday at O’Neal Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kem Thomas. Entombment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Ernest Hyler, Jr.
June 22, 2003

Ernest Hyler, Jr., 68, of the L and B Home in Saluda, formerly of Newberry, died Sunday afternoon at the Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Hyler was born on February 16, 1935 in Newberry County, a son of the late Ernest H. and Ophila Duckett Hyler.
Mr. Hyler is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and William Breed of Hogansville,GA.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Cliff and Amy Hyler, Kenny Hyler, William and Cindy Hyler, all of Newberry, and Robert and Elaine Hyler of Whitmire; two sisters, Bobbie Bush of Honea Path and Jeanette Bundrick of Chapin; a brother, Ernest J. Hyler of Newberry; fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Jean Hyler; three sisters, Willie Mae McDaniel, Helen Livingston, and Virginia Moates; a brother, Ernest Henry Hyler.
Funeral services for Ernest Hyler, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P. M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Hyler, 2422 Highland Drive, Newberry.
Active pallbearers will be Allen Hill, Russell Hyler, Dean Livingston, David Hyler, Andy Navarrete, Henry Hyler, and Steven Hyler.
