Harry Payne III

ROCK HILL - Mr. Harry Cleveland Payne III, 58, of 724 Emorywood Ave. died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Dr. Shelton P. Sanford III and Dr. William A. Fox officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery in Jonesville.

A native of Union, Mr. Payne was a son of the late Harry C. Payne Jr. and Sue Beasley Payne. He was a graduate of Union High School and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1960. He was employed with Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia for several years before purchasing Parker Funeral Home in Calhoun Falls. In Calhoun Falls he served on the Rescue Squad as treasurer and volunteer fireman. He was vice president of Lions Club and Jaycees. He was given the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. Listed in the Young Men of American, he served as chairman of the Piedmont Group of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association. He moved to Rock Hill in 1976 to manage Bass Funeral Home. In 1989 he became a sales representative for Gramling Specialty Advertising, while continuing to work with area funeral homes.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Sprouse Payne; his son, Harry C. Payne IV of Charlotte; his daughter, Rebecca Lynn Payne Berberich of Rock Hill; his sister, Carolyn B. Payne of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight in the Ladies Parlor at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Willie Watson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Willie J. Watson of 340 Whitner St. died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home, with Brother Charles Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Watson was a son of the late Maggie Bell Watson and Allen Watson. He was employed at the Rock Hill Senior Citizens Center. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School. He was an Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Mae Watson; his daughter, Sonya Robinson of Rock Hill; three sisters, Emily Pate and Ann Watson, both of Charlotte, and Inez Watson of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at home.

James Brantley

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. James Glenn Brantley, 56, of 1911 Boyd Road died Monday, July 26, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rick Martin officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester, Mr. Brantley was a son of the late Marion Gilbert "Doc" Brantley and Elma Catherine Beach Brantley. He was employed for 21 years with Duke Power Co. at the Catawba Nuclear Plant. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, church training director and an usher.

Surviving are his wife, Merle C. Brantley; his son, Glenn Brantley of Detroit; and two brothers, John G. Brantley of Blackstock and Marion W. Brantley.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonght at Barron Funeral Home.

Mary Finney

ELLENBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Mary D. "Billie" Bumgardner Finney, 82, of 3041 Hollis Road died Monday, July 26, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Cagle officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mrs. Finney was a daughter of the late Alfred Clayton Bumgardner and Mamie Wilson Bumgardner. She was the widow of Worth Everette Finney. A homemaker, she was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Alvin Darty and Dean Darty, both of York, and Billy Finney of Lattimore, N.C.; her brother, Claude Bumgardner of Hickory, N.C.; and two sisters, Lucy Dellinger of Hickory, N.C., and Jean Ramsey of New House, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Gene Finney, 2825 Louise Drive, Shelby, N.C.

Lloyd Hunter

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Lloyd Allen "Pokey" Hunter, 79, of 4420 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Monday, July 26, 1999, at the Dorn Veteran's Administration Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Bobby Bailey officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Rockfish, N.C., he was a son of the late Wardee A. Hunter and Mary Katheryn Westbrook Hunter. A retired meat cutter for Lancaster Frozen Foods, Mr. Hunter was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving are his wife of the home; his son, Allen Lloyd Hunter of Lancaster; four daughters, Kelly Crump of Lancaster, Kimberly Blackmon of Bamburg, Francine Gardner of Fort Mill and Lillian Louise Surratt of Blackstock; three stepsons, John C. Whitley of Kershaw, Richard C. Boston of Heath Springs and William Glenn Whitley of Georgetown; three stepdaughters, Helen Burton of Lugoff, Margaret Reeves of Kershaw and Rose Ann Talley of New Braunfels, Texas; two brothers, Melvin Taylor and Bill Taylor, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Mary Melton of Columbia and Shirley Bell of Mullins; 28 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Kelly Crump, 2983 Brendale Drive, Lancaster.

Reba Plyler

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Reba Sue Plyler, 42, of 1600 Park Circle, formerly of Lancaster, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Providence Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, with the Revs. Larry J. Davis and Jesse Adams officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Plyler was a daughter of Alfred "Buddy" Plyler of Lancaster and the late Margie Lowery Plyler. She was a graduate of the South Carolina School for the Blind and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Plyler was a former teacher in the early childhood development program at the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church in Lancaster and attended Southside Baptist Church in Columbia. She was a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge 376 in Lancaster.

Surviving in addition to her father are her former husband, Larry Mayfield of Columbia; and her brother, Ronald Plyler of Lancaster.

Michael Talford

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Michael Jermaine Talford, 16, of 4108 Mountain Gap Road died Sunday, July 25, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Rush officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Michael was a son of Janie Boulware Talford of Chester and the late Joe Louis Talford. He attended Great Falls High School, where he was a member of the football and basketball teams. He also enjoyed weight lifting.

Surviving in addition to his mother are four brothers, Larry Talford, Charles Talford, James Talford and Ernest Talford, all of Blackstock; and his maternal grandmother, Lucille Boulware of Fort Lawn.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 701 Old York Road, Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Fred Tate Jr.

SHELBY, N.C. - Mr. Fred Albert Tate Jr., 70, of 816 Graham St. Extension died Monday, July 26, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Shelby, with the Rev. William Troutman officiating.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Tate was a son of the late Fred Albert Tate Sr. and Alta Putnam Tate. He was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and Furman University. He was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard and retired owner of Fred Tate Co. Mr. Tate was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church where he was a former Clerk of Session and Sunday school teacher. He was a Shriner.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Campbell Tate; two daughters, Marilyn Odom of Rock Hill and Jean Hiebert of Greenville, N.C.; two brothers, Dr. Jesse Tate of Greenville, N.C., and Michael Tate of Rock Hill; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service in Shelby and after the burial in Rock Hill at the home of Samuel L. Campbell, 2861 Bartmouth Drive, Rock Hill.

Eric Totherow

CLOVER - Mr. Eric Wayne Totherow, 32, 640 S. Beersheba Road died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Clover Church of God, with the Revs. Verson Hodges Jr. and William Hubbard Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mr. Totherow was a graduate of Clover High School. He was employed with Champion Laboratories in York.

Surviving are his wife, Gwen Houser Totherow; his son, Christopher Totherow of the home; his daughter, Erica Totherow of the home; his parents, Wayne and Wylene Totherow of Clover; two brothers, Michael Totherow and Kevin Totherow, both of Clover; his grandmother, Girlene Montgomery of Clover.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Thomas Brogdon Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Thomas Elmore Brogdon Jr., 66, of 1210 Westmoreland Drive died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Shane Patrick, Roy Barnes and Jim Goodroe officiating.

A graveside service will be 4:30 p.m. Friday at Sumter Cemetery in Sumter.

A native of Sumter County, Mr. Brogdon was a son of the late Thomas Elmore Brogdon Sr. and Frances Keels Brogdon. He was a member of First Baptist Church and an Army veteran.

A career banker, Mr. Brogdon was employed at the South Carolina National Bank in Sumter from 1958 to 1962 when he became vice president and cashier for First Citizens Bank in Lancaster. His service at First Citizens included vice president/city executive, vice president/branch manager at the Main Street branch and vice president/regional credit analyst. He retired in 1988 and served as a consultant to the bank. He also served as member of the First Citizens board of directors and on the Lancaster advisory board.

He was a graduate of Wofford College and the LSU School of Banking. He was on the board of directors of the Lancaster Children's Home and was a supporter of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.

Surviving are two sisters, Bunnie B. Shuler and Sara B. Boykin, both of Sumter; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends at home.

Minnie Frisbee

MARION, N.C. - Mrs. Minnie "Big Mom" Allison Frisbee, 93, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at McDowell Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Westmoreland Funeral Home, with the Revs. Carl Roland and Tommy Hensley officiating.

Burial will be at McDowell Memorial Park.

A native of Del Rio, Tenn., Mrs. Frisbee was a daughter of the late Andrew Cush Allison and Emma Hicks Allison. She was the widow of Columbus M. Frisbee. She was retired from Eli-Walker Mills. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Ray Frisbee of Marion and Herman "Sonny" Frisbee of Gastonia, N.C.; five daughters, Mildred Edwards of Nebo, N.C., Alberta Bailey of Marion, Texie Flynn of Fort Mill, Hazel Jones of Rock Hill, and Kathy Kirkland of Black Mountain, N.C.; her sister, Jessie Meadows of Hickory, N.C.; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Jim Chewning.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

H. Neil Griffin Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Hansen Neil Griffin Jr., 43, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Hospice House No. 2 in Monroe, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church.

A native of Charlotte, he was a graduate of Garinger High School. He earned a watchmaking degree from Wayne Community College and for many years was the youngest watchmaker in North Carolina. He also was a graphic artist and owned Neil's Signs and Banners. He was a member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Teresa Fowler Griffin; two stepdaughters, April Ward and Tracy Holtzapfel; his mother, Sally Summerlin Newman and her husband, Donald; his father, Neil Griffin Sr. and his wife, Nancy; his brother, Rick Griffin; four sisters, Melanie Perry, Kathy Nixon, Susan Brown and Lisa Delane Hunycutt; and his grandmothers, Eva Page and Lorna Griffin.

Margaret Hammel

LANCASTER - Mrs. Margaret Crowley Hammel, 74, died Tuesday, July, 27, 1999, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.

The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Giuliani officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Hammel was a daughter of the late John Carrol Crowley and Helen Collins Crowley. She was the widow of John Francis Hammel. Mrs. Hammel was a graduate of Hillsdale College and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Allen Hammel of Lancaster and John Car Hammel of Hickory; her sister, Josphine Groth of Fallbrook, Calif.; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, Jeffrey Hammel, 2052 Country Club Drive, Lancaster.
