Ferd J. Summer
June 13, 2003

Ferdinand Jacob “Ferd” Summer, 73, of Springfield Place, formerly of 1523 Caldwell St., Newberry died Friday, June 13, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Summer was born on April 21,1930 in Newberry, a son of the late Forrest and Mittie Young Summer. Mr. Summer was a retired employee and former manager of Kaywood Corp. of Joanna. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and attended Macedonia Lutheran Church. He attended Clemson College and was a long-standing member and past President of the Newberry Lions Club.
Mr. Summer is survived by a daughter, Lisa Summer Rice and her husband, Joseph F. Rice of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Ferdinand J. Summer, Jr. of Columbia and John M Summer of Newberry, two grandchildren, Ann Estelle Rice of Mt. Pleasant and Martin Cotney Summer of Newberry; a sister, Clara Elliot Young and family of Allendale; and a brother, Forrest Summer and family of Florida. He was predeceased by his wife, Jo Ann Martin Summer, a sister, Nancy Pierce, and a brother, Tom Summer.
At the request of the family, funeral services for Fred J. Summer will be private.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Elsie S. Graham
June 11, 2003

Elsie Sowell Graham, 93, formerly of Newberry, widow of Frank D. Graham, Sr. died June 11, 2003 at the Lowman Home.
Mrs. Graham was born on February 5, 1910 in Pageland, a daughter of the late Henry B. and Jessie Blakeney Sowell. Mrs. Graham was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Graham is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David Graham, Jr. and Judy L. Graham of Prosperity; three sisters, Pearl S. Arant and Rachael S. Caraway both of Pageland, and Kathleen S. Huey of Columbia; a brother, Reece Sowell of Pageland; and two grandchildren, Frank D. Graham, III, and Allison Lindler.
Graveside services for Elsie Sowell Graham will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A. M. at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Randy Derrick.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 P. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Graham, Jr., 131 Holiday Acres Road, Prosperity.

John J. Renne'
June 1, 2003

John J. Renne’, 66, of Chapin, died Sunday June 1, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Renne’ was born on October 22, 1936 in New York City, NY, a son of the late
George J. Renne’, Sr. and Viola Pfleger Renne’. He retired from Ideal Business Machines in Charleston and later Midlands Office Machines in Chapin. He served for two years in the U. S. Navy at Charleston.
Mr. Renne’ is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee Renne’ of the home; a daughter, Dena Renne’ Borden of Chapin; two sons, John Lee Renne’ and Michael Kevin Renne’, both of Chapin; two brothers, George J. Renne’, Jr. of Chapin and Walter B. Renne’ of Pawleys Island and seven grandchildren, Jessica Amick, Amy Renne’, John Renne’, Steven Walker, Leah Borden, Michael Renne’ and Ashley Renne’
Funeral service for John J. Renne’ will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry by the Rev. William C. Mitchell, Jr.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, 310 Broad Street, Suite 2-N, Charleston, SC 29407 or Counseling Center at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, Taylor St .at Marion St., Columbia SC 29220.

Henry D. Greene
May 26, 2003

Henry D. Greene, 28, of 1148 Lanewood Road, Newberry, died from injuries received in a lawn mower accident on Saturday, May 24, 2003.
Mr. Greene was born on December 18, 1974 in Columbia, a son of Terry D. and Elizabeth Turner
Greene. He was employed by Hobgood Electrical and Machinery Co. in Columbia. He was of the Baptist faith and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Consolidated Fire Department #5 and the Friendly Boat Club.
Mr. Greene is survived by his parents of Newberry and his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Curtis P. Turner of Newberry.
Funeral services for Henry D. Greene will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Eddie Bledsoe. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at his residence, 1148 Lanewood Road, Newberry.

Rebecca Pettit Abrams
May 22, 2003

Rebecca Pettit Abrams, 85, of Springfield Place, Newberry, widow of James C. Abrams, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Springfield Place.
Mrs. Abrams was born on January 29, 1918, in Newberry, a daughter of the late Aubrey Pettit and Elizabeth Lewis Pettit Vaughn. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, the late Benjamin Tillman Vaughn. She was a retired Post Mistress at Newberry College and she was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Abrams is survived by a daughter, Ann Abrams of Suwanee, GA; two brothers, Robert Pettit of Hilo, HI and LeRoy Vaughn of West End, NC; one grandson and spouse, Dr. James E. Paschal, Jr. and Michelle Paschal of Rochester NY; and one great grandson, William James Paschal of Rochester, NY.
Graveside funeral services for Rebecca Pettit Abrams will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Saturday in Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon.

Grady F. Price
May 21, 2003

Grady F. Price, 90, formerly of 1309 Ebenezer Road, Newberry, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mr. Price was born on October 27, 1912 in Columbia, the son of the late Lester F. and Beulah Dennis Price. He was a graduate of Newberry College Class of 1933 and was an U. S. Army Air Corp Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church Men, and the Newberry Historical Society. He retired from the Kendall Company, Mollohon Plant, with over forty years of service.
Mr. Price is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Millie and Phillip Livingston; a son and daughter-in-law, Milton and Norma Lavender Price; a brother, Lewis E. Price; and two grandchildren, Melissa Price and Amanda Price all of Newberry. He was predeceased by his wife, Bernice Perry Price, two brothers, Irby L. Price and Jason O. Price.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Friday at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brett Collins. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Price, 1019 Wallace Drive, Newberry.

Professor M. Foster Farley
May 17, 2003

Professor M. Foster Farley, 81, formerly of 1334 Garden Circle Drive, Newberry, died Saturday in the Tucker Nursing Home in Tucker, GA.
Professor Farley was born in Dyersburg, TN, the son of the late Myron and Mary Hamilton Farley.
Professor Farley was an Associate Professor of History at Newberry College for 34 years, retiring as Professor of History Emeritus in 1992. After retirement, Prof. Farley continued to teach a Civil War Battlefields course every summer. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, serving as layreader for several years.
Prof. Farley graduated from Furman University with a BA in History, English, and Speech, and did graduate work in history and political science at Emory University and the American University in Field of History. He also attained a Master’s degree in History from the University of South Carolina.
Prof. Farley served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant.
He authored or co-authored INDIAN SUMMER—AN ACCOUNT OF A VISIT TO INDIA, NEWBERRY COUNTY IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and AN ACCOUNT OF THE HISTORY OF STRANGER’S FEVER IN CHARLESTON, 1699-1896. He also wrote nearly 90 articles for various historical publications, including SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORY ILLUSTRASTED, SANDLAPPER, BRITISH HISTORY ILLUSTRATED, CIVIL WAR TIMES, and MILITARY HERITAGE.
He also traveled extensively, escorting several Newberry College tours to such locales as India, Pakistan, Ireland, and England.
Over his career, Prof. Farley was honored by organizations such as the American Historical Association, the South Carolina Historical Society, the Newberry County Historical Society, Who’s Who in American Education, and the Sons of the American Revolution.
In poor health for the last few years of his life, Prof. Farley had been residing at Tucker Nursing Center in Tucker, GA.
Prof. Farley is survived by a daughter, Mary Alice Farley of Escondido, CA; a son, Marc Steven Farley of Atlanta, GA; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Nifong Farley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church by the Father David Stewart. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to M. Foster Farley Scholarship Fund, Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
