Melvin Knox

CHESTER - Mr. Melvin Wallace Knox, 53, of 1246 Belt Line Road died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. Chip Sneed and Raymond Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Knox was a son of the late Willie Knox and Josie Dallas Knox. He was employed with Springs Industries at the Elliott Plant in Fort Lawn. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served in the South Carolina National Guard.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce F. Knox; three sons, David Knox of Rock Hill, Joey Knox and Will Smith, both of Chester; his daughter, Angela Knox Barber of Richburg; two sisters, Becky Thompson of Rock Hill and Doris Kee of Chester; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Great Falls Highway, Chester, SC 29706.

James Threatt

LANCASTER - Mr. James Walter Threatt, 77, of 2214 Lynwood Drive died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 5 p.m. today at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. James Spencer III and the Rev. Joel Rhyner officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Threatt was a son of the late Walter Eugene Threatt and Ada Talbert Threatt. He was a retired electrician and a member of Second Baptist Church, Tweenagers, Leroy Springs Senior Citizens and the McDonald Green Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Carnes Threatt; his son, Donny Wayne Threatt of Lancaster; two daughters, Sarah Robinson and Judy Threatt Munn, both of Lancaster; his brother, Eulease M. Threat of Lancaster; four sisters, Floye Walters, Loretta Flynn, Mary Blackwell, all of Lancaster, and Ovdea Lloyd of Camden; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church building fund, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC.

Hayward Adams

CLOVER - Mr. Hayward Adams, 59, of 727 Kings Mountain St. died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at New Home AME Zion Church in York, with Dr. C.J. Jenkins and the Rev. Billy Tate officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Adams was a son of the late Eldred and Bertha Boyd Adams. He worked at Four Leaf Textile in Clover and was a member of the New Home AME Zion Church.

Surviving are his wife, Amy Cassell Adams; his son, Hayward Adams Jr. of Clover; his daughter, Tammie Caldwell of Gastonia, N.C.; five sisters, Pansy Anderson and Catherine Williams, both of Rock Hill, Elmira Anderson of Gastonia, Sarah Miller of New York, and Gloria Agurs of York; two brothers, Walter Adams of Gastonia and Ivory Lee Adams of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Monday at New Home Zion Church and at other times at the home.

Generation Funeral Home is in charge.

Mack Brown

JOANNA - Mr. Mack Lee Brown, 80, of 606 N. Main St. died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Laurens County Hospital in Clinton.

A graveside service will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Pinelawn Memory Garden.

A native of Royston, Ga., Mr. Brown was a son of the late Earcie Brown and Cancie Brown. He was a former employee of Joanna and Clinton Mills. He was co-owner and operator of the Brown Brothers Grocery Store in Joanna. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Hamm Brown; his son, Maxie H. Brown of Rock Hill; his daughter, Mary Ann Delk of Bamberg; his brother, James L. Brown of Joanna; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.

Cynthia Massey

COLUMBIA - Cynthia C. Gentry Massey, 54, of 7625 Parkview Drive died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Columbia, with the Rev. Hiram Spain officiating. Burial will follow at Palmetto Cemetery in Columbia.

A native of Charlotte, Ms. Massey is a daughter of the late Nettie O. Massey Gentry and Booker T. Gentry. She was a graduate of West Charlotte High School and worked at Amcol Systems Inc. in Columbia.

Surviving are her son, Richard E. Massey of Columbia; two brothers, Jerome Powell Gentry and Thomas Clinton Gentry, both of Charlotte; three sisters, Frances Frazier, Margaree Hill and Harriet G. Love, all of Charlotte; and one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Baptist Church, 2700 Chestnut St., Columbia.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 9 .m. tonight at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to The Donta'e Massey Scholarship Fund or the America Heart Association.

Elizabeth Schaefer

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schaefer of 1610 Bridal Trail died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at The Episcopal Church of Our Savior, with the Rev. Thomas B. Carter officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of Luzerne County, Penn., Mrs. Schaefer was a daughter of the late Charles E. Tomkies and Anna Healey Tomkies Kendrick. She was a homemaker and was a member of the St. Matthias Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her husband, Paul A. Schaefer; two sons, Gary Schaefer of Memphis, Tenn., and Bryan Schaefer of Columbia; her daughter, Nancy Kyler of Staunton, Va.; her brother, Edwin Tomkies of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthias Episcopal Church building fund, P.O. Box 4740, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Kathleen Belue

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Kathleen Williams Belue, 79, of 545 Arch Drive died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at home.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Park with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating.

Mrs. Belue was a daughter of the late C. L. Williams and Mamie Pope Williams. She was the widow of Grayson W. Belue. She was a member of the First ARP Church.

Surviving are her son, Bobby Belue of Rock Hill; her daughter, Kathy Fanning of Rock Hill; four brothers, Heyward Williams, Leonard Williams and Richard Williams, all of Rock Hill, and Robert Williams of Mint Hill, N.C.; two sisters, Nannie Norton and Thelma Hammond, both of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Bobby Belue, 4296 Marshall Road.

Memorials may be made to the Oakdale Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1249 Oakdale Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Paul Dunn

KERSHAW - Mr. Paul Edward Dunn, 74, of 1477 Buffalo Creek Road died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Roberts Cemetery, with the Rev. C.B. Dunn officiating.

Mr. Dunn was the son of the late John C. Dunn and Bessie Roberts Dunn.

He was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class at the New Testament Baptist Church. Mr. Dunn was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are two brothers, Ralph Dunn of Kershaw and the Rev. C.B. Dunn of Kingstree.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home of Ralph Dunn, 1477 Buffalo Creek Road, Kershaw.

Glynnis Flynn

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Glynnis Elkins Flynn, 52, of 9200 Glenwater Drive died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Vivian Pressley officiating.

Mrs. Flynn was the daughter of the late Glenn Elkins and Maggie Marker Elkins.

The Rock Hill native was a member of the West Main Church of the Nazarene and a former employee of Piedmont Medical Center.

Surviving are her husband, Paul R. Flynn of Charlotte; her son, Steve F. Maynor of Rock Hill; her daughter, Kimberly M. Mullins of York; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Greene Funeral Home from 5 to 7 tonight and at the home of Kimberly M. Mullins, 7366 Shauna Road, York.

Carlile Grey II

CLOVER - Mr. Carlile Robert Grey II, 88, formerly of Clover, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Gess officiating.

Mr. Grey was the son of the late Carlile Rush Grey and Margaret Helen Riddle Grey. He was the widower of Mary Josephine Allen Grey.

A retired Marine Corps first lieutenant, Mr. Gray was a pilot who flew in World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1953 and flew for 22 more years.

Surviving is his son, Carlile Robert Grey III of Blythe, Calif.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Erskine Jones

ROCK HILL - Mr. Erskine Young Jones, 75, of 4723 Karwood Drive died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Adnah United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Michael S. Leonhardt and Linda Jenkins officiating.

A native of York County, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Haskell Vernon Jones and Clara Pearl Brown Jones. The World War II Army veteran was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. after 25 years of service. Mr. Jones was a member of the Adnah United Methodist Church and formerly of the New Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Rachel Robinson Jones; his son, Mike Jones of Rock Hill; his daughter, Susan Jones Simpson of Rock Hill; his brother, Howard Jones of Rock Hill; his sister, Helen Jones Belk of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Adnah Cemetery Association, 1 Adnah Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Ruth Latham

YORK - Mrs. Ruth Duncan Latham, 88, of York died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

The graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Sharon ARP Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Meredith Cavin officiating.

Mrs. Latham was a daughter of the late John Rufus Duncan and Daisy Young Duncan. She was the widow of Boyd Latham.

The Winthrop College graduate retired from the York County Treasurer's Office after 42 years of service. Mrs. Latham was a member of the Sharon ARP Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Rebecca Moore of Rock Hill and Virginia Faulkner of Greenville; and her brother, Frank Duncan of Sharon.

The family will receive friends after the service at the Sharon ARP Church in the Fellowship Hall.
