Gladys Yonce

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Gladys Rawls Yonce, 81, of 2123 Surrey Lane died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Shrum officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Yonce was the daughter of the late Dolph Rawls Sr. and Carrie Wylie Boyd Rawls. She was the widow of Vasco Yonce.

She was retired from J.C. Penney and was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Simmie D. Yonce of Rock Hill, her daughter-in-law, Phyll Yonce of Rock Hill; and her grandson, Zach Yonce of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Oakland Baptist Church Building Fund, 1067 W. Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Elsie Sullivan

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elsie Horton Sullivan, 101, of 2655 India Hook Road died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Westminster Towers.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cem-etery with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Timothy McClendon officiating.

Mrs. Sullivan was a native of York County. She graduated from Draughn's Business College in Columbia. She was a member of the Rock Hill Women's Club and was a longtime member of St. John's United Methodist Church. She was active in the Browning Sykes Sunday school class and other church activities.

She was the daughter of the late Howell F. and Margaret Roach Horton. She was the widow of William Herbert Sullivan.

Surviving are her daughter, Dorothy S. Reid of Rock Hill; her sister, Nelle H. Mulligan of Columbia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2655 India Hook Road.

Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church Chapel Fund, P.O. Box 149, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

James Boykin

LANCASTER - Mr. James Boykin, 59, of 1751 Flat Creek Road died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Revs. Charles Hendricks and Tim McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow at Westside City Cemetery.

A native of Bishopville, Mr. Boykin was a son of the late Dalton Boykin and Pearl Coulter Boykin. Mr. Boykin was a dyeing and finishing technician for Hoechst Celanese in Charlotte. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Imogene Terry Boykin of the home; two sons, Chad Boykin and Brian Boykin, both of Lancaster; her daughter, Lisa Boykin Killian of Lancaster; two brothers, Otis Boykin of Sumter and Paul Boykin of Lancaster; two sisters, Bessie Rodgers of Cullman, Ala., and Lola Mae Howard of Columbia; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Irene Caveny

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Irene Williams Caveny, 95, of 311 Pennington Road died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tirzah ARP Church cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Tirzah ARP Church, with the Rev. Barry Eller officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Caveny was the daughter of the late Walter Betts Williams and Mattie Wilson Gourley Williams. She was the widow of Robert W. Caveny.

She was a homemaker and a member of Tirzah ARP Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Martha C. Adkins and Carolyn C. Matthews, both of Rock Hill; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

Lelene Hooker

RALEIGH, N.C. - Mrs. Lelene Goode Hooker, 71, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at her home in Raleigh.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Raymond Davis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Hickory Grove, Mrs. Hooker was a daughter of the late Arthur and Maggie Moore Goode. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Hickory Grove. Mrs. Hooker was the widow of Roy Hooker.

Surviving are three daughters, Yvonne Boozer, Celestine Hooker and Marilyn Hunter, all of Raleigh; four sons, Roy Dean Hooker and Arthur Hooker, both of Spartanburg, Allen Hooker of Charlotte and Lottie Hooker of Raleigh; her sister, Tecola Good McCluney of Sharon; and 15 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Arthur Hooker, 152 Cleveland Park Drive in Spartanburg.

Wooward Funeral Home in Spartanburg is in charge.

Robert Hunt Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Robert "Rob" Hunt Jr., of 531 Washington Court died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Robertson officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mr. Hunt was a son of the late Daisy Sims Hunt and Robert Hunt Sr. He was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army in World War II, where he received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He was a Mason and attended Emmett Scott High School.

Surviving are six daughters, Rosemary H. Samuda of Germantown, Md., Dorothy McRae and Mia Hefney, both of Rock Hill, Betty Rollins of Catawba, Brownie Lee of Jamaica, N.Y., and Diane Johnson of Washington, D.C.; three sons, James McRae and Michael Harrison, both of Rock Hill, and James Massey of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Pearline Cureton and Willie Steele, both of Rock Hill, and Corine Gray of Patterson, N.J.; his brother James Hunt of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 6 this afternoon at the Robinson Funeral Home. Mr. Hunt will be placed in the church 11 a.m. Thursday.

Lucy Pittman

FORT MILL - Mrs. Lucy Parks Pittman, 81, of Springs Street died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, in Byers, Colo.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Unity Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dan Holloway officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Pittman was a daughter of the late Frank G. Allen and Hazel Scarborough Allen. She was the widow of E.S. Parks, Jr. and Ike B. Pittman. She was a member of the Women's Circle at Unity Presbyterian Church, the Fort Mill Woman's Club and a Fort Mill garden club. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her son, Ed S. Parks III; two daughters, Linda Parks Shinn of Sylmar, Calif., and Fran Mullin of Byers, Colo.; two brothers, Hazel G. Allen of Conyers, Ga., and Douglas Burton Allen of Anderson; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the family home.

Bernice Robinson

KERSHAW - Mrs. Bernice Hilton Robinson, 77, of 8931 Old Jefferson Highway died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Flat Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Warren Jones officiating. Burial will be at Flat Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late Lance L. Hilton and Eva Byrd Hilton. Retired from Springs Industries, she was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the Church Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her son, Lyle Philmore Robinson of Kershaw; her brother, Heyward Hilton of Lancaster; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the home of Lyle Philmore Robinson, 1596 Gold Mine Highway.

Mary Roofe

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Lois Lynn Roofe, 73, of 584 Powell St. died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. Miriam Mick officiating. Burial will be at the Adnah United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Roofe was a daughter of the late Waddell and Mattie Wilson Lynn. She was a clerk at Little Giant and One-Hour Martinizing Cleaners in Rock Hill. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended and conducted Bible classes at the Park Avenue Adult Daycare Center.

Surviving are her husband, Jennings F. "Buck" Roofe; two daughters, Judith Lynn Totherow and Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Nancy L. Carter of Chester and Betty L. Wright of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews, 5835 Mount Gallant Road in Rock Hill.

Albert Westley

LAURELTON, N.Y. - Mr. Albert W. Westley, 68, formerly of Chester, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at North Shore Nursing Home in Long Island, N.Y.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday in New York.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Westley was a son of the late Dave Westley and Agnes Westley. He attended Chester County public schools, was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Chester and was retired from North Shore Hospital on Long Island.

Surviving are his wife, Zemoria Sanders Westley; seven children; his sister Sally Singfield of Chester; two brothers, John Westley of the Bronx, N.Y., and Herbert Westley of High Point, N.C.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

King's Funeral Home of 135 Cemetery St., Chester is in charge of local arrangements.

Gladys Yonce

Mary Dunfee

ROCK HILL - Ms. Mary Bell Dunfee, 57, of 899-110 White Horse Road died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at her home.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Four Square Baptist Church, with the Rev. Doyle Smith officiating.

Ms. Dunfee was a dietary aide at New Hope Carolinas.

Surviving are three daughters, Rita Mae Farr, Rose Mary Dunfee and Patricia Joann Gunn; her son, Gary Ray Dunfee; her sister, Alice Brook-over of Parkersburg, W.Va.; her brother, Jack Dobbins of Ohio; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

William Epps Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Kenneth "Bill" Epps Sr., 58, of 3050 Oak Park Road died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Hogg. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Epps was a son of Cole Blease "C.B." Epps of Rock Hill and the late Nannie Rose Critcher Epps. He was a farmer and member of Providence Baptist Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving in addition to his father are two sons, William Kenneth "Billy" Epps Jr. and Cole Epps, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Audrey Epps of Fort Mill; his brother, Bobby Epps of Myrtle Beach; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, 215 E. Main Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Thomas Garvin Jr.

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Thomas Allen Garvin Jr., 81, of 919 N. Weldon St. died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Hinton officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Garvin was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Gastonia, where he was a member of the Deacon Board, senior combine male choir and general superintendent of Sunday school. He was membership chairman of the NAACP, chairman of the board of Myrtle B. Hoffman Day Care Center, Time and Place Committee of the Gaston County Baptist Missionary Association, Dean of Gaston County Baptist Sunday School Association and a member of Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns.

Surviving are five daughters, Bettye Canada of Charlotte, Dorothy Farley of Tarrytown, N.Y., and Mamie Chisholm, Joyce Hoyle and Debra Tate, all of Gastonia; two sons, Thomas Garvin of Charlotte and Ernest Hoyle of Gastonia; nine grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. Friday at the church.
