Margaret Hanauer

WHEELING, W.Va. - Mrs. Margaret T. "Tommy" Hanauer, 87, of 1290 National Road died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at Christ Methodist Church on National Road in Wheeling.

Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Mrs. Hanauer was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Lona Cope Thomas. She was the widow of Sam E. Hanauer. Mrs. Hanauer was a retired nurse and was a graduate of Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing. She was an active community volunteer working with the American Red Cross, Wheeling Woman's Club and Ladies' Shrine. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Harriet H. Bucy of Rock Hill; her brother, William C. Thomas of Tiltonsville, Ohio; and three grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the Rock Hill School District Foundation, P.O. Box 10072, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

Joseph Hegler

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Joseph Prince "Pop" Hegler, 80, of 5741 Flat Creek Road died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Lancaster County Conval-escent Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jamie Helms and V. M. Forrester officiating. Burial will be at Fork Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Hegler was a son of the late Ernest Richard Hegler and Maude H. Hegler. He was retired owner and operator of Great Falls Auto Body Shop. He was a member of White Bluff Baptist Church and the Fork Hill Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Addie Gardner Hegler; his son, Phillip Hegler of Kershaw; three brothers, Thomas D. Hegler of Augusta, Ga., Ray Hegler of Aiken and Wilson Hegler of Lancaster; and his granddaughter.

Joe Curbeam

CHESTER - Mr. Joe Wylie Curbeam, 67, of 110 White Oak Street died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Moses Light-ner officiating and the Rev. R.L. Mc-Clurkin assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Curbeam was a son of the late Rev. Sam M. Curbeam and Sarah Feaster Curbeam. He was a member of Mount Hopewell Baptist Church. He attended the public schools of Fairfield County. He retired from Hoechst Celanese in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Barber Curbeam of Charlotte; two sons, Joe Louis Massey of Rock Hill and Sammy Curbeam of Charlotte; his daughter, Marianne Curbeam of Charlotte; three bothers, Leroy Curbeam Sr., John S. Curbeam and Lester Curbeam, all of Chester; his sister, Margaret C. Hemphill of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home. The body can be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Evelyn Isom

ROCK HILL-Mrs. Evelyn Brown Isom of Philadelphia, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in Rock Hill.

A funeral will be Friday in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Isom had lived in Philadelphia. She was the widow of Oscar Isom Sr.

Surviving are three sons, Oscar Isom Jr., Leroy Isom and Quinton Isom, all of Philadelphia; her daughter, Diane Towels of Mitchelleville, Md.; her brother, Arthur B. Brown of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was Tuesday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church.

Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

Daphine Singleton

LANCASTER - Mrs. Daphine Johnson Singleton, 50, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Singleton was a daughter of Hazel Ingram Johnson of Lancaster and the late Lacoste Johnson. She was employed by Duracell USA as a battery packer and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Henry Reece Singleton of Lancaster; her daughter, Susan Catoe; her brother, Robert L. Johnson; her sister, Patricia J. Harper; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her mother, 2618 Blue Jay Road.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 2217 Airport Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Richard Witter

ROCK HILL - Mr. Richard Witter, 51, of 2533 Saluda Road died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bert Watson officiating.

A native of Arcade, N.Y., Mr. Witter was a retired network coordinator for the County of York and also served as a district executive of the Boy Scouts of America. He also taught in Spartanburg for more than 10 years before coming to Rock Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Wolfe Witter; two sons, Clay Batten and Kris Batten, both of Charleston; his daughter, Nikki B. Lesslie of Rock Hill; his parents, Robert and Melba Witter of Winter Haven, Fla.; three brothers, Ron Witter and William Witter, both of Skaneateles, N.Y., and Bob Witter of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and his granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Matthew Jackson

FORT MILL - Mr. Matthew Weddington "Foots" Jackson, 74, of 109 Ralph Bunche St. died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at James Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ira Roddey officiating. The Rev. Ray Thompson will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Mecklenburg County, Mr. Jackson was a son of the late Sophia Jackson. He was a retired truck driver and formerly worked for Kimbrell's Furniture in Fort Mill. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. As a young man, he was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita B. Jackson; three sons, Isaac A. Jackson of the home, Joseph M. Jackson of Rock Hill and James A. Jackson of Fort Mill; four daughters, Louvenia Jackson and Lestina J. Potts, both of Fort Mill, and Rosa Lee Powell and Vallery J. White, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Louise Barber of Lan-caster and Betty J. Dixon; 15 grandchildren, four of whom he reared, Antional Jackson, Delvin Jackson, Nigel Potts and Stephanie Alexander; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home and at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

Mary Roofe

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Lois Lynn Roofe, 73, of 584 Powell St. died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. Miriam Mick officiating. Burial will be at the Adnah United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Roofe was a daughter of the late Waddell and Mattie Wilson Lynn. She was a clerk at Little Giant and One-Hour Martinizing Clean-ers in Rock Hill. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended and conducted Bible classes at the Park Avenue Adult Daycare Center.

Surviving are her husband, Jennings F. "Buck" Roofe; two daughters, Judith Lynn Totherow and Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Nancy L. Carter of Chester and Betty L. Wright, both of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews, 5835 Mount Gallant Road in Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, Inc. 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to Park Avenue Adult Daycare Center, 359 Park Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Creed Gibson Sr.

CLOVER - Mr. Creed William Gibson, Sr., of 2369 Cabe Road died Thursday Aug. 19, 1999, at home.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia, N.C., with the Rev. Danny Spencer officiating.

A native of Copper Hill, Tenn., Mr. Gibson was a son of the late James G. and Emma Lattermilk Gibson. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a retired carpenter.

Surviving are his wife, Blanche Walker Gibson; two sons, Creed W. Gibson Jr. and James G. Gibson, both of Clover; two stepdaughters, Jewell Radford of Gastonia and Betty Brown of Charlotte; three sisters Alease Johnson of Cleveland, Tenn., Grace Newman of Ducktown, Tenn., and Annalou of Copper Hill, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia from 6 to 8 tonight and at other times at the home.

Katie Lee Joseph

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Katie Lee Joseph, 77, of 220 Pursley St. died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Tanglewood Health Care Center in Ridgeway.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pineville AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. Eugene Goodwin officiating and the Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy assisting.

The daughter of the late James Douglas and Nannie Hemphill Douglas, Mrs. Joseph was a member of Pineville AME Zion Church, where she was a former member of the gospel chorus, hymn choir and the Burial Aide Society.

Surviving are her husband, Roddey Joseph Jr.; three sons, William D. Joseph and Larry D. Joseph, both of Newark, N.J., and Willie Joseph Jr. of Charlotte; three daughters, Rosa M. Joseph of Newark, Mary L. Cunningham of Rock Hill and Elisa A. Bostic of Charlotte; two sisters, Creola Walker of Englewood, N.J., and Catherine Adams of Rock Hill; her brother, Equitty Durham of Philadelphia; 23 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Nazareth Baptist Church and at other times at the home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bryte Massey

LANCASTER - Mrs. Bryte Baker Gordon Massey, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Virginia Mothershed and the Rev. Howard Allen officiating. Burial will be at Shiloh ARP Church.

A daughter of late Hurley Biven Baker and Mamie McAteer Baker, Mrs. Massey was the widow of Raymond K. Gordon and Marion Massey. She was retired from Springs Industries and a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Johnny M. Gordon of Lancaster and Ray K. Gordon of Charlotte; two daughters, Manettia Broughton of Lancaster and Sybil Riley of Greenwood; her stepson, Charles Massey of Beaufort; two stepdaughters, Shirley Ford of Lake Lure, N.C., and Juanita Baker of Lancaster; her sister, Thelma Smith of Lancaster; five grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Manettia Broughton, 2141 Cane Mill Road, Lancaster.

Albert Mitchell

ROCK HILL-Mr. Albert Lewis "Nip" Mitchell, 48, of 302 High St. died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at By Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. L.W. Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Pineville AME Zion Church cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell was a construction worker and was educated in the York County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Mitchell of Charlotte; four sons, Albert Lewis Simpson and Tyrone Mitchell, both of Charlotte, and Chris Morrison and Marcus Mitchell, both of Rock Hill; his mother, Henrietta Mitchell of York; his father, Robert Mitchell of York; three brothers, James Lee Mitchell and Harry Mitchell, both of Gastonia, N.C., and Glenn Mitchell of Rock Hill; two sisters, Anne Perry and Barbara Matthews of York; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

James Morton

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Mr. James Arthur Morton, 52, of 114 Yarboro Road died Thursday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Gastonia, Mr. Morton was a son of the late R.D. Morton and Cora Blanton Morton. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was employed with Fresh Coat Painting Co. in Belmont as a painter. He was a member of the Charlotte Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian Mills Morton; three stepsons, Jimmy Carpenter of Gastonia, N.C., Jason Grigg of Asheboro, N.C., and Jerry Grigg of the home; his daughter, Veronica Morton of Gastonia; his stepdaughter, Lynn Terry of Gastonia; three brothers, Judson Morton of Belmont, N.C., Richard Morton of Newberry and Gene Morton of Gastonia; three sisters, Frances Rudisill and Nollie Ann Clemmer, both of Dallas, N.C., and Eual Mae Hancock of Rock Hill; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at McLean Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Eugene Snyder

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. Eugene Snyder, 72, of 31 Cove Road died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. John Giuliani officiating.

A native of Clinton, Iowa, Mr. Snyder was a son of the late Harold Alex Snyder and Genevieve Julia Cleary Snyder. A resident of Lake Wylie since 1980, Mr. Snyder was an Army veteran of World War II and a McDonalds franchisee.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy O. Snyder of Lake Wylie; his daughter, Cari Snyder of Raleigh, N.C.; his brother, Thomas Harold Snyder of Dixon, Ill.; and his sister, Patricia A. Tolson of Fort Myers, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.
