Robert Walters

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robert B. Walters, 73, of Charlotte died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at University City United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Wilson officiating.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Walters was a son of the late Arthur Raymond Walters and Christine Rorie Walters. He was a retired auctioneer and a member of University City United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Walters; his brother, Ed Walters of Fort Mill; two sisters, Dean Skipper of Stanley, N.C., and Judy Udick of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Michael Boyd

SHELBY, N.C. - Mr. Michael Crawford Boyd, 59, of Kings Mountain, N.C., died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in Shelby.

A graveside service with military rites will be 2 p.m. today at Florence National Cemetery in Florence.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Boyd was a son of the late John Crawford Boyd and Thelma Horne Boyd. He retired from the Navy as a master sergeant in 1977 at Virginia Beach, Va., where he owned several restaurants. He was a member of the American Legion Frank Roach Post No. 34 in Rock Hill.

Surviving are three daughters, Marie Frend and Melissa Boyd, both of Milford, Mass., and Michell Boyd of Mississippi; two brothers, John M. Boyd and Donald G. Boyd, both of Rock Hill; and his sister, Evie Arant of Kings Mountain.

Memorials may be made to Cleveland County Hospice of Wendover, Shelby, NC 28150.

Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

Carl Carnes

PENNYRILE, Ky. - Mr. Carl Jefferson "Short" Carnes, 82, of South Campbell Street died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Lamb Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Skinner officiating. Burial will be at Green Hill Memorial Gardens in Christian County, Ky.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Carnes was a son of the late Jeff Carnes and Ester Jane McManus Carnes. He was an Army cook for 30 years and served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a Methodist.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Carnes; his son, Carl J. Carnes Jr. of Christian County; five daughters, Carol McAskill and Tammy Neel, both of Hopkinsville, Ky., Mary Jane "Beanie" Hester of Clarksville, Tenn., and Sarah Ellen Waldrop and Vicki Von Cardwell, both of Christian County; his brother, Claude Carnes of Lancaster; his sister, Carrie Jane Carnes of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas Castles

GREENVILLE - Mr. Thomas Moore Castles, 68, of 13 Lakeside Drive, formerly of Hickory Grove, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in Church Hill, Miss.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Hickory Grove, with the Rev. Dr. Clyde Mitchum officiating.

A native of Hickory Grove, Mr. Castles was a son of the late Clarence Castles and Blanch Boozer Castles. A retired school teacher, he earned his bachelor's degree from Furman University and his master's degree from Columbia University. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving is his niece, Patsy Castles Miskelly of Hickory Grove.

The family will receive friends at the home of Patsy Miskelly, 5089 Hickory Grove Road, Hickory Grove.

Mary Cox

BELMONT, N.C. - Mrs. Mary Kale Cox, 84, formerly of Belmont died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in Gastonia, N.C.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Little officiating.

A native of Belmont, Mrs. Cox was a daughter of the late Carlyle W. Kale and Dora Stowe Kale. She was the widow of Leland Hall Cox Jr. A homemaker, she was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are her daughter, Shannon C. Wilder of Rock Hill; her sister, Clara K. Bullard of Gastonia, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at First United Methodist Church.

Jacqueline Liverett

CLOVER - Mrs. Jacqueline Joyce Rayburn Liverett, 60, of 1763 North Highway 321 died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doyle C. Baynard officiating.

A native of Farmer, Ill., Mrs. Liverett was a daughter of the late Jess Oliver Rayburn and Annabell Rayburn.

Surviving are her husband, Gene Thomas Liverett; two sons, Jess Rayburn of Bowling Green and Tony Rayburn of Thomasville, N.C.; her stepdaughter, Doris Clendening of Clover; four brothers, Bill Rayburn of England, Bob Rayburn of Bass Lake, Ind., Wayne Rayburn of Bradley, Ill., and Jim Rayburn of Pappanau, Ill; four sisters, Pat Shotwell and Pam Rayburn, both of Bradley, Barbara Orte of Mesa, Ariz., and Frances Miller of Manteno, Ill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.

Katherine Outen

PAGELAND - Mrs. Katherine Laney Outen, 63, of 302 E. Maynard St. died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. William Junior West officiating. Burial will be at the High Point Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Outen was a daughter of Susie Knight Laney of Pageland and the late William Minor Laney. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and was employed by Springs Industries.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, Harold Plyler and Mark Plyler, both of Lancaster; her daughter, Kathy Smith of Florence; five brothers, Will Laney, Edward Laney and Richard Laney, all of Pageland, Roy Laney of Mount Croghan and Bill Laney of Lancaster; four sisters, Louise Nichols of Lancaster, Carolyn Oliver of Jefferson, and Frances Stevens and Joann West, both of Pageland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends this evening at First Free Will Baptist Church of Pageland and at other times at the home.

Cauthen Funeral Home in Lancaster is in charge.

Elizabeth Phillips

CLOVER - Mrs. Elizabeth "Lizzie" McCleave Phillips, 74, of 109 Mobley St. died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Bowling Green, with the Rev. Dr. Milton Key officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late Luther McCleave Sr. and Hattie Meeks McCleave. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and the Clover Zion Church Aid Society No. 11.

Surviving are her husband, A.C. Phillips; two daughters, Sara H. Davis of Gastonia, N.C., and Sarah E. Phillips of the home; her son, Willie G. Phillips of Clover; six sisters, Mary F. McCleave, Bertha McCleave and Edna McDowell, all of Clover, Leola Hall of Ferndale, Mich., Irene Brown of Gastonia and Willie W. Russell of Kannapolis, N.C.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Generation Funeral home, 103 Mobley St., Clover, and at other times at the home.

Gayle Powers

HEATH SPRINGS - Mrs. Gayle Beckham Powers, 55, of 3642 Kershaw Camden Highway died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church in Lancaster, with the Rev. Dr. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Heath Springs.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Powers was a daughter of Elbert L. Beckham of Heath Springs and the late Elizabeth Blackmon Beckham. She earned her bachelor's degree in early childhood education from the University of South Carolina. She was employed as a day-care licensing agent by the S.C. Department of Social Services. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Earl "Bunky" Powers; her son, Byron Keith Powers of Heath Springs; and two sisters, Carol West of Liberty Hill and Doris Criminger of Matthews, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home in Lancaster.

E. Brice Ramsey

SHARON - Mr. Edward Brice Ramsey, 72, of 4277 Ramsey Road died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Unity Baptist Church in Hickory Grove, with the Rev. Jimmie McCraw officiating and the Rev. John P. Smith assisting. Burial will be at Cannan United Methodist Cemetery in Smyrna.

A native of York County, Mr. Ramsey was a son of the late James Franklin Ramsey and Ollie Edwards Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. after 36 years. He was owner and operator of Ramsey Paint Co. in Sharon. He was a member of the Watt Blackmon Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hickory Grove and attended Unity Baptist Church. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Spencer Ramsey; three sons, Mike Ramsey of Fountain Inn, and Gene Ramsey and Jimmy Ramsey, both of Sharon; his daughter, Brenda Ramsey Robbins of Hickory Grove; his brother, David Ramsey of Hickory Grove; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home in York.

Margaret Busby

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Hood Busby, 79, of 517 Flint St. died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Timothy McClendon officiating.

A native of Orangeburg, Mrs. Busby was a daughter of the late William Clayton Hood and Mary Freda Bohn Hood. She was the widow of Jack Tate Busby. A homemaker, Mrs. Busby was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Jack Tate Busby Jr. of Franklin, Tenn., and Kenny Busby and Charlie Busby, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Sue Stewart of Catawba; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Dorothy Conner

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Hughes Conner, 68, of Rock Hill died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas A. Little officiating and the Rev. John Cody assisting. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Mrs. Conner was a daughter of the late Luther Samuel Hughes and Katie Bailey Hughes. She was the widow of Edward Franklin Conner. A homemaker, Mrs. Conner attended Calvary Tabernacle Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Laura F. Conner of Rock Hill and Chris C. Byers of York; her granddaughter whom she raised, Lorie H. Gordon of Rock Hill; two brothers, Lloyd Hughes of Lanesboro, Mass., and Billy Gene Hughes of Batesville, Ark.; two sisters, Jessie Martin and Naomi Boatwright, both of Rock Hill; her granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Chris Byers, 4413 Gentry Lane, York.

Orlo Hostetler

ROCK HILL - Mr. Orlo J. Hostetler, 81, of 972 Eagle Drive died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Beverly Health Care.

A native of Kent County, Mich., Mr. Hostetler was a son of the late Murl Hostetler and Edna Mishler Hostetler. He was retired from Kent County Road Commission. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Hostetler; two sons, Steve Hostetler of Canyon County, Calif., and Ron Hostetler of Rock Hill; three brothers, Jim Hostetler of Woodland, Mich., Lawrence Hostetler of Freeport, Mich., and Howard Hostetler of Hastings, Mich.; two sisters, Barbara Ketchum of Mason, Mich., and Edwina Burgess of Jackson, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Faye McClure

ROCK HILL - Miss Faye McClure of 1044 Southland Drive died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be noon Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. L. L. Hancock officiating and the Revs. Daran Mitchell and Mary Austin assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Miss McClure was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. She attended the public schools of York County.

Surviving are her son, Charlie Ray McClure of Rock Hill; her sister, Isabell Segers of Astoria, N.Y.; four brothers, Ray McClure, Otis Wells and James Wells, all of Rock Hill, and Thomas Wells of Springfield, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at home.

The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
